The US Navy's newest destroyer, the USS Spruance (DDG 111) arrived in Key West Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, for its commissioning ceremony set for Saturday, Oct. 1. At almost 510 feet long, Spruance is a multi-mission ship that carries Tomahawk cruise missiles, a 5-inch gun, sonar systems and two helicopters, Spruance is powered by four gas-turbine engines and is capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots. Although Key West has a long Navy tradition with operations beginning as far back as 1822, the Oct. 1 ceremony is to be the first time that the Southernmost City in continental America has hosted a Naval vessel commissioning. The ship is named after Admiral Raymond Spruance, an aircraft carrier task force commander during the Battle of Midway in World War II.

Courtesy FedFlix Brigadier General William W. Spruance was commissioned in the US Army Field Artillery on his graduation from Princeton University in 1939, and entered active duty a year later. Pioneering the use of light planes, he piloted his own aircraft with General Patton's Second Armored Division. He completed military flight training in 1943, and transferred to the Air Corps, later serving in the China-Burma India theater flying the "Hump." He was released from active duty in 1946. He was an original member of the Delaware Air National Guard, organized in September, 1946, and served in various positions until he was named Assistant Adjutant General for Air, with the rank of Brigadier General, in 1956. He retired from that post in 1976. He has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal; the Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster; the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters; the Conspicuous Service Cross of Delaware; and a Command Pilot rating, with more than 4500 hours. Since a near-fatal crash in 1961, resulting in extensive burns, he has given more than 1400 lectures on crash survival and flight safety to more than 140000 people, and has made several training films. He has received many testimonials from those who credit him with saving their lives. Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner. He commanded two corps, XXIV Corps, with five army divisions, and III Amphibious Corps, with three Marine divisions, all told some 182000 troops. In overall charge was Vice Adm. Raymond A. Spruance, commander of the Fifth Fleet. Okinawa, sixty miles long and from two to twenty eight miles wide, is the largest and most important of the Ryukyu Islands. The 500000 Okinawans were not then considered to be Japanese. Japanese Lt. Gen. Mitsuru Ushijima commanded the Thirty second Army, strength of 77000 troops, who with naval forces and some 20000 Okinawan conscripts provided about 100000 defenders. Ushijima planned a defense in depth, with his main strength in the heavily populated south, and three major defense lines following east west ridgelines. Buckner landed his two corps, each with two divisions in the assault, across surprisingly undefended beaches near Hagushi village on the western side of the narrow waist of the island. The III Corps on the left and XXIV Corps on the right crossed the island almost without enemy contact. The Marines then turned northward and the army headed south.
