GOOD NEWS! A dvd release has been announced for March 2012! Although this film has been released on dvd in Spain and Australia (and possibly elsewhere), there has been no official release in the UK. This is strange, as there have been several box sets of films by director Michael Powell and this was his first collaboration with Emeric Pressburger who wrote the screenplay, but this film has so far been overlooked. Set in the first world war, the film stars Conrad Veidt as a German naval officer, with Valerie Hobson and Sebastian Shaw as English agents trying to outwit him. The film has a rich supporting cast, and in this clip, the first 13 minutes of the film, you will see Marius Goring, Bernard Miles, June Duprez, Helen Haye, Mary Morris,and, in an uncredited role, Esma Cannon. Such was the screen chemistry between Conrad Veidt and Valerie Hobson, that they were cast again virtually immediately in another spy thriller, Contraband, also directed by Michael Powell. The clip here is taken from a print of the film screened by BBC2 in 1986. To my eye this is the crispest print I have seen, with a well contrasted image and good sound level. I have also added the British Board of Film Censors introduction that was included in the film's VHS release in the early 1990s.

Operation CIA is a 1965 black-and-white spy thriller set in Saigon but filmed in Bangkok. It is Burt Reynolds' first lead role. The screenplay is by author Bill S. Ballinger who was writing a series of spy thrillers at the time. Allied Artists had previously filmed their A Yank in Viet-Nam on actual South Vietnamese locations but by 1965 the security situation had deteriorated to such an extent that the safety of the film makers could not be guaranteed.
