The Lockheed SR-71 was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed from the Lockheed A-12 and YF-12A aircraft by the Lockheed Skunk Works. The SR-71 was unofficially named the Blackbird, and called the Habu by its crews. Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the design's innovative concepts. A defensive feature of the aircraft was its high speed and operating altitude, whereby, if a surface-to-air missile launch were detected, standard evasive action was simply to accelerate. The SR-71 line was in service from 1964 to 1998, with 12 of the 32 aircraft being destroyed in accidents, though none were lost to enemy action.

Capable of speeds in excess of mach 3+(2200 mph+) and 85000 feet, the Blackbird was the most capable platform for strategic reconnaissance. It's ability to launch to a specific target and return with the required intelligence in a matter of hours was unsurpassed by any other platform or country. The SR-71 was developed by the infamous Lockheed Skunk Works and the primary construction material was a Titanium alloy. The two Pratt & Whitney J-58-P4/32500 lb. thrust engines had aerospikes at the inlet of the engine. The spikes moved in and out in order to control the airflow through the engine during the transition from subsonic to supersonic speeds. This feature, coupled with the afterburners unique design, allowed the SR-71 to cruise in continuous afterburner with a high degree of efficiency.

First publicly displayed at Edwards Air Force base in 1964, the YF-12 was never adopted by the military as an operational aircraft. It was, however, a precursor to the SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance plane. Two YF-12 aircraft were flown in a joint Air Force-NASA research program at the NASA Flight Research Center (now the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center) between 1969 and 1979, although the second plane, piloted primarily by the Air Force, was lost to an inflight fire in 1971. The two YF-12 aircraft bore the serial numbers 60-6935 and 60-6936. The YF-12 allowed NASA researchers at all four of the agency aeronautical centers (Langley, Lewis, and Ames as well as the Flight Research Center) to study the thermal, structural, and aerodynamic effects of sustained, high-altitude, Mach 3 flight. Painted flat-black, the YF-12 was fabricated primarily from titanium alloy, which enabled it to withstand skin temperatures of over 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Work on the YF-12 began in secret in the late 1950's at the Lockheed Advanced Development Projects office, better as known the "Skunk Works," in Burbank, California. The SR-71 arrives at RAF Greenham Common for the 1983 International Air Tattoo (IAT), Pilot: BC Thomas, RSO: John Morgan, July 1983. The commentator was John Doyle. I was the pilot in this video, but did not fly the SR-71 out of RAF Greehnam Common. I was the "mobile control" officer when the aircraft departed and the pilot was Maj Jim Jiggens, a USAF Thunderbird pilot and formally a US Army helicopter combat pilot in Vietnam. On the evening of the air show featured in this video, women, who were protesting President Reagan's decision to station intermediate nuclear missiles in England, broke into the security cordon around the air show aircraft and threw paint on several, including this SR-71. Owing to the unique metals associated with the SR-71, the removing of the paint required special maintenance procedures to assure that no "hot spot" would develop on subsequent flights. It was quite a hassle and we were not amused over this incident. Jim and I planned a farewell departure for the protesters who were encamped in a squalor of tents just outside the main gate. Jim obtained clearance for a "closed pattern" and turned to a downwind leg, descended to about 100 feet above the ground, and flew directly over the protestors' encampment. It was early and probably most were asleep, but not for long. Jim was flying about 250 knots and selected afterburner in both engines as he was approaching the tents. This video is shot with the SR-71 flying at near minimum flight speed as there are few aircraft that could match the speed of SR-71, for more than a few minutes at best, even at it's lower end operation speeds. During the refueling sequence, note that near the end of the refueling cycle, the KC-135 appears to be nose down in flght attitude. This is because as the SR-71 nears fuel capacity, it must increase speed, so the KC-135 must go into a shallow dive with the throttles to the firewall, and fly at maximum operating speed, with the SR-71 wallowing around behind it at near minimum flight speed. I know an SR-71 pilot or two, and I have been told the true maximum speed of the aircraft was never actually reached, or at least that speed was never declassified and so is not stated. This aircraft is the source of the infamous $500 hammer. As usual, the claims of waste for buying hammers for $500 is made by people who don't know anything about what they are saying. The $500 hammer is made of Titanium, as is a lot of the SR-71, and because dis-similar metals cause corrosion on contact, a Titanium hammer was made to work on this aircraft. The same is said for those who comment of the "leaking" of fuel on the ground and at low altitude. The aircraft is designed to expand, due to friction with the atmosphere, as much as 1 foot in lenght at operational speeds and altitude.
