If You're Ready (Come Go With Me ) - The Staple Singers from album "BE WHAT YOU ARE" in 1973

The Staple Singers were an American gospel, soul, and R&B singing group. Roebuck "Pops" Staples (1914-2000), the patriarch of the family, formed the group with his children Cleotha (b. 1934), Pervis (b. 1935), Yvonne (b. 1936), and Mavis (b. 1939). They are best known for their 1970s hits "I'll Take You There", "Respect Yourself", and "Let's Do It Again". The family began appearing in Chicago-area churches in 1948, and signed their first professional contract in 1952. During their early career they recorded in an acoustic gospel-folk style with various labels: United Records, Vee-Jay Records, Checker Records, Riverside Records, and then Epic Records in 1965. While the family surname is "Staples", the group used the singular form for its name, resulting in the group's name being "The Staple Singers". It was on Epic that the Staple Singers began moving into mainstream pop markets, with "Why (Am I Treated So Bad)" and "For What It's Worth" (Stephen Stills) in 1967. In 1968, the Staple Singers signed to Stax Records and released two albums with Steve Cropper and Booker T & the MG's — Soul Folk in Action and We'll Get Over. By 1970, Al Bell had become producer, and with Engineer Terry Manning, the family began recording at the famed Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, and Memphis' Ardent Studios, moving in a more funk and soul direction. The first Stax hit was "Heavy Makes You Happy (Sha-Na-Boom Boom)". Their 1971 recording of "Respect Yourself", written by Luther Ingram and Mack Rice ...

In March, 2004 Mavis Staples came to Nashville to record Hard Times Come Again No More for our first release, Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster. The day was magical. We spent the afternoon as guests of historic Sound Emporium studio who graciously donated one of their rooms for the recording session. Buddy Miller, Steve Fishell and Matt Rollings backed Mavis up while our favorite sound engineer Dave Sinko recorded the incredible performance. Mavis nailed the track on the first run-through, but we persuaded her to sing the song a few times for our own pleasure and to the delight of our special in-studio guests Emmylou Harris and Julie Miller. Current economic times are tough and may seem familiar to those who experienced them before. These images are gritty and real. Sometimes history repeats itself, but hopefully the worst is behind us. Although "Hard Times Come Again No More" sounds as if it were written during the Great Depression, it was actually written in 1854 by Stephen C. Foster, America's pioneer songwriter. Mavis Staples, one of the greatest living gospel and R&B singers, recorded the song as part of the CD "Beautiful Dreamer - The Songs of Stephen Foster" a tribute album released on the Emergent Music label in 2004. Included are many of his famous and some lesser known songs recorded with contemporary interpretations and arrangements.

(formerly, "NINA SIMONE- Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood") Wrestling for the soul of America. I grew up in the South and Midwest during the civil rights years and their aftermath. It challenged everything about my world and changed my perception of life. Not a single day passes where the lessons learned are not effecting my perceptions, my outlook, or my aspirations. What is right now comes from their paths, what is wrong is from where any of us have lost the way. It's on each of us to make it better for each other. Selflessness brings us into the better angels of our nature. This is my psalm of love to my heroes, the bravest of the brave. The PBS series, EYES ON THE PRIZE, has become available again. To me, it is the single greatest and most relevent thing ever shown on television. Check it out and be heartened by the bittersweet struggle for the very soul of America. Peace. Get involved today, it's easy: www.StaplesForStudents.org Selena Gomez is one of the hardest working people in show biz right now-- and even with her acting and music careers, she still makes time to give back and specifically to lend her time to UNICEF. In 2009, Selena was named as the organization's youngest ever ambassador. As an ambassador, Selena uses her voice to raise awareness for children's issues. Selena's personal goal was to really focus on the number of preventable childhood deaths that happen all over the world every day. And Selena isn't just the face of UNICEF -- she actually practices what she preaches, and just a few months ago, the teen star travelled all the way to Chile to visit children there and to help raise awareness about poverty and to promote childhood education. For more information on UNICEF, visit http This summer, Staples and DoSomething.org will host our fourth annual Staples for Students School Supply Drive -- a campaign mobilizing young people to collect school supplies for the 13 million kids who return to school without basic supplies. There have been lots of covers of "Since I Fell For You" over the years since it was composed by Buddy Johnson in 1945. The versions by Dinah Washington and Lenny Welch are very lovely but for sheer breathtaking soul, power and emotion, this version by Mavis Staples is the best in my opinion. I would go as far as to say that this is one of my favorite female vocal performances of all time. I hope someone out there loves it as much as I do :).
