Stav gets 35-50 years in prison for shooting death of Harbor Springs man
Although he did not receive a life sentence, Edwan Donald Stav will be spending the majority of the remaining years of his adult life in prison. Earlier today, Monday 57th Circuit Court Judge Charles W. Johnson sentenced the 39-year-old Readmond Township resident to 35-50 years in prison for the Jan. 3 shooting death of 24-year-old Nicholaus Sowers of Harbor Springs. On Feb. 16, Stav pleaded no contest to six of the 19 charges against him in circuit court, claiming that because of heavy intoxication, he had no recollection of the events of Jan. 3, when he shot Sowers with a shotgun in the chest at close range. Following the incident, his blood alcohol content was determined to have been .38 — more than four times the legal limit. During his sentencing today, Monday, March 29, Stav faced six felonies, including one count of weapons - firearms use/discharge under the influence causing death, a 15-year felony; one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, a four-year felony; one count of weapons - possession by a felon, a five-year felony; and three counts of weapons - felony firearm, each of which carry a maximum of up to two years in prison. In addition, he also faced habitual offender - fourth offense, which could have increase his maximum sentence to life in prison. Emmet County Prosecutor Jim Linderman requested that Judge Johnson sentence Stav to life in prison based on his previous criminal record, as well as the events of Jan. 3.
