STEPHEN COLBERT @ Congress: "Migrant Workers have No Rights!"

Stephen Colbert gets serious for Congress. | WASHINGTON DC 09-24-2010 = = = Stephen Colbert launched a comedy sneak attack on Congress Friday. He submitted serious testimony to a judiciary subcommittee hearing on the issue of farm workers and immigration, but when it was his turn to speak, the talk show host slipped into character as a satirical conservative to make his points in support of more favored status for migrant farm laborers. Colbert did break character once during his testimony. He was asked by Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., why he chose this issue. "I like talking about people who don't have any power. And this seems to be [about] people without any power," he said, arguing that migrant workers "don't have any rights." "We invite there here and ask them to leave," he said. abcnews.go.com

Stephen Colbert's Presidential Campaign Speech: South Carolina's Favorite Son (2007)

October 28, 2007 thefilmarchived.blogspot.com On October 16, 2007, satirist Stephen Colbert (in the guise of his character) officially announced that he would run for President of the United States. This came after weeks of being pressured to do so by the public and stating that he would need a sign. Although the legitimacy of his campaign was questioned, he maintained that he was serious. Colbert had originally planned to run for both the Republican and the Democratic nomination in his home state of South Carolina. After learning that the fee to file for the Republican primary was $35000, he abandoned plans to run as a Republican (he had previously stated that he could avoid FEC rules if he stayed under $5000 in campaign expenditure). Although he paid the $2500 fee to be included in the South Carolina Democratic ballot, he was denied a place on the ballot by the South Carolina Democratic Party executive council. On November 5, 2007, Colbert officially dropped his Presidential bid. Colbert had planned to appear at the College of Charleston on October 27, but was unable to make the event due to a scheduling conflict. One beauty shop owner in Charleston turned down a request from one of the Colbert Report's staffers to use her shop as a staging ground for a Colbert campaign stop, finding the campaign unfunny and insufficiently serious. "I don't even know why he's running in South Carolina," said the Charlestonian. Bob Coble, mayor of Columbia, was more welcoming. On Sunday ...

Stephen Colbert vs Ayn Rand?

When "The Colbert Report" took on the recent increase in the reported popularity of the late Ayn Rand's philosophy in "The Word" segment last week, it reminded me of my own rejection of Rand's "Virtue of Selfishness" back in my college days and made me think of how that value judgment affects our economic choices as epitomized by a remark from Pulitzer prize winning Washington Post economics reporter Steve Pearlstein on last week's "Real Time with Bill Maher." You can see the entire March 11, 2009, segment of "The Word" titled "Rand Illusion" from which I took the two short clips for my video on the Colbert Nation website at www.colbertnation.com And, although the March 13, 2009, broadcast is not available on the HBO website, you can find more information about HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" at www.hbo.com Finally, you can read my old college paper titled "The Vice of Selfishness" in which I reject Ayn Rand's philosophy at www.liberalviewer.com
