Dizzy Gillespie • Stan Getz • Sonny Stitt -- Dark Eyes

From the album "For Musicians Only" Tenor Saxophone -- Stan Getz Trumpet -- Dizzy Gillespie Alto Saxophone -- Sonny Stitt Art Direction [Original] -- Sheldon Marks Bass -- Ray Brown Drums -- Stan Levey Guitar -- Herb Ellis Piano -- John Lewis (2) Producer [Original Session] -- Norman Granz Tracks 1. Bebop 2. Dark Eyes 3. Wee (Allen's Alley) 4. Lover Come Back To Me 5. Dark Eyes The story behind this from my Dad's (Stan Levey) point of view is that everything was done in one take no 2nd takes no over dubbing. He had spent the whole day recording for TV, Mission Imposible Mannix etc. so he thought a date with Stan Getz this should be pretty laid back. Well nothing could be further from the truth he said "The count offs were breath taking but once they got thru BeBop everything settled down" his favorite was Wee Allen's Alley. It was virtually a live real Bebop session, nothing worked out, just play by the seat of your pants or get off the bandstand. Like it or not that was the way it was with Bird and those cats, the real thing no pretense. Bob Levey Source: Amazon reviews

KING STITT - FIRE CORNER.wmv

RIP WINSTON (KING STITT) SPARKES Born. 17th September 1939, Kingston, Jamaica. Died. 31st January 2012, Kingston, Jamaica. KINGSTON, Jamaica — King Stitt, a pioneer in rap reggae, died Tuesday in his Caribbean homeland of Jamaica. He was 72. King Stitt died at his home in the capital of Kingston after a long fight with prostate cancer and diabetes, said Jamaican musicologist Bunny Goodison, who was a close friend to the performer for more than 50 years. Stitt had recently been discharged from a public hospital. The entertainer known offstage as Winston Sparks started his musical career in the late 1950s on Kingston's circuit of sound systems, a sort of portable disco. Stitt is credited as one of the earliest performers of "toasting," a vibrant form of Jamaican deejaying that directly inspired hip-hop music. He is best known for songs like "Paradise Plum" and "Fire Corner." He was a close collaborator of the late music producer Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd, who ran the celebrated Studio One and guided Stitt's career for years. Born with disfigured facial features, Stitt, who was also missing numerous teeth, dubbed himself "The Ugly One." Big Youth, a veteran Jamaican deejay whose real name is Manley Augustus Buchanan, said he vividly recalled his times as a boy watching Stitt's unique performances in the 1960s. "He was the first king. Stitt really did a lot for the music, always had a nice vibe," Also "Without being disrespectful, Stitt made a mark vocally and visually ...

"Just Friends" - Sonny Stitt Rendition (Winston Raval & Jonathan Bautista)

"Just Friends" is a popular song that has become a jazz standard. The song was written in 1931 by John Klenner with lyrics by Sam M. Lewis. Although introduced by Red McKenzie and His Orchestra in October 1931, it first became a hit when singer Russ Columbo performed it with Leonard Joy's Orchestra in 1932. It charted again the same year in a version by Ben Selvin and His Orchestra and has been recorded often since. Edward "Sonny" Stitt (b. February 2, 1924, Boston, Massachusetts[1] -- d. July 22, 1982, Washington, DC)[2] was an American jazz saxophonist of the bebop/hard bop idiom. He was also one of the most well-documented saxophonists of his generation, recording over 100 albums in his lifetime. He was nicknamed the "Lone Wolf" by jazz critic Dan Morgenstern in tribute to his relentless touring and his devotion to jazz. He is considered the greatest disciple of Charlie Parker.[3] Although his playing was at first heavily inspired by Charlie Parker and Lester Young, Stitt eventually developed his own style, one which influenced John Coltrane. Stitt was especially effective with blues and with ballad pieces such as "Skylark". Jonathan Bautista on Tenor Saxophone Winston Raval on Piano
