Theo Jansen's Strandbeests - Wallace & Gromit's World of Invention Episode 1 Preview - BBC One

More on this programme: www.bbc.co.uk Kinetic sculptor and artist Theo Jansen builds 'strandbeests' from yellow plastic tubing that is readily available in his native Holland. The graceful creatures evolve over time as Theo adapts their designs to harness the wind more efficiently. They are powered only by the wind and even store some of the wind's energy in plastic bottle 'stomachs' to be used when there is no wind.

Strandbeests at Exmouth

As part of Exeter summer festival they've got this great dutch chap over who makes crazy but amazing walking sculptures. We heard he had a couple on the beach in Exmouth so instead of watching England get whipped by Germany we had a far far better time watching this contraption and eating ice cream on what was a fairly quiet beach. Just to reiterate the small one is powered by you pulling it, the big one is wind powered, yes really! And its made of dutch cable conduit and zip ties.

Beach Creatures: Theo Jansen and his Strandbeests

This week in the magazine, Ian Frazier writes about Theo Jansen, a Dutch artist who makes kinetic sculptures that walk on the beach called Strandbeests. In this video, with footage by the filmmaker Alexander Schlichter, Frazier discusses these wind-powered sculptures and how they fit into the tradition of Dutch landscapes.

artsy is as fartsy does...read on:. Theo Jansen is the Dutch artist and creator of what he calls "Kinetic Sculptures," where nature and technology meet. Essentially these sculptures are robots powered by the wind only. filmed on location in Exmouth, Devon UK www.strandbeest.com "if you can't" vocal recording by monstersbaby ccmixter.org "1982" by onlymeith ccmixter.org Additional footage shot in Paris, France and various locations in Dartmoor National Park and Devon *note: there is a strange pop in the audio in a couple of places which occur only on the YT upload. *sigh* :(

Theo Jansen: STRANDBEEST

Theo Jansen: STRANDBEEST Theo Jansen (* 1948) studied physics at the University of Delft (The Netherlands) from 1968-1975. He left University to become an artist. He painted for the first seven years. Since 1990 Jansen has been working on skeletons made of electric-conduits which walk on windpower. These animals have evolved into several generations over the last twelve years. Eventually he wants to put the animals out in herds on the beaches, where they live their own lives. In summer 2009 digital brainstorming made it possible, that Jansen's "Strandbeests" occupied the art space Walcheturm in Zürich. Strandbeest - Theo Yansen

Since about ten years Theo Jansen is occupied with the making of a new nature. Not pollen or seeds but plastic yellow tubes are used as the basic matierial of this new nature. He makes skeletons which are able to walk on the wind. Eventually he wants to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives.

Artist Theo jansen demonstrates the amazingly lifelike kinetic sculptures he builds from plastic tubes and lemonade bottles. His creatures are designed to move - and even survive - on the beach and on their own. The wall between art and engineering only exists in our minds. Theo Jansen visited Indiana University Indianapolis today, April 12, 2007, with one if his beautiful, amazing strandbeests. At one point a leg broke. He had a zip tie and it fixed in under a minute. I feel lucky.

Kinetic sculptures - Theo Jansen. Born 1948 in Scheveningen, Netherlands 1968 Studies physics at University of Delft. 1990 I have been occupied creating new forms of life. Not pollen or seeds but plastic yellow tubes are used as the basic material of this new nature. I make skeletons that are able to walk on the wind, so they don't have to eat. Over time, these skeletons have become increasingly better at surviving the elements such as storms and water and eventually I want to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives.
