Tens of thousands also died in West Papua and Aceh. Indonesians assess Suharto's legacy - 14 Jan 08

President Suharto ruled Indonesia for more than three decades, before mounting opposition forced him to step down. His autocratic style brought economic growth, but against a background of corruption and human rights abuses. Now, following multiple organ failure, doctors have put the 86-year-old's chances of survival at 50 per cent, and told his family to prepare for the worst. As a result, many Indonesians have begun to reassess his time in power. Step Vaessen reports.
Suharto Fights Back - 46 minute documentary - trailer

For more information, visit: www.journeyman.tv A strong film on the anti-Suharto protests and the army's support for him in the days before he stepped down. After devastating and deadly riots in Indonesia the question on everybody's lips is whether the people can convince the army to join them. We have an exclusive interview with one of the country's most powerful military men, General Prabowo, who has been linked with the Muslim 'Green' faction which wants to seize power for itself. Amien Rais, leader of the 28 million strong opposition Muhammadiyah party, talks of the strength of his supporters to force Suharto to clean up his act. The head of the IMF in Jakarta tells of his frustrations in dealing with Suharto. The IMF demanded that some of the nepotism and cronyism stop, but Suharto has clearly been consolidating his family's position. His daughter Titiek rebuts questions with a regal air. Her multi-billion plan to build the world's longest bridge was blocked by the IMF. In a multi-story car park the military prepare for another food riot. Mothers are arrested as they protest about the soaring cost of baby milk. They hand the soldiers flowers as a symbol of 'People's Power', the Philippines movement where the army sided with the people to topple the President. Suharto tentang Gerakan 30 September 1965

Suharto's Rivals Unite - Indonesia

Feb 1998 We meet President Suharto's opposition and discover that calls for him to go grow ever louder. Amien Rais is the leader of the Muslim group Muhammadiya, with 28 million followers. He has joined forces with Megawati Sukarnoputri to oppose Suharto in the coming elections. Suharto has been in power for 30 years, his rule bolstered by his cronies and a repressive army. A Trade Unionist is secretly interviewed in his hospital cell - he's on trial for 'subversion', and if found guilty, could face the death penalty. It's a measure of the insecurity of Suharto's undemocratic regime. Megawati supporters are beaten with batons by Indonesian troops at a demo. Megawati herself bemoans the violence. In contrast, some anti-Chinese demonstrations appear to have been actually organised by the government to deflect criticism for the current financial crisis onto the Chinese. Whilst Suharto's grasping children bask in almost Royal splendour, the poorest tell us they couldn't even buy Christmas presents. And even the middle class are speaking out. But Suharto continues to stage extravagant displays of his power and ignore the widespread discontent. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Indonesia since Suharto Soeharto Soharto Sueharto Indonesia editor in Thailand - - Endy Bayuni, Chief Editor of The Jakarta Post, speaks on "Democracy in Indonesia since Soeharto Stepped Down." Across South and South-east Asia, the story of democracy continues to be a struggle on many fronts, sometimes pitting large sections of the public who yearn for it against members of the ruling elite who treat with contempt the political will of the people. Each narrative unfolding in a country's attempt to restore democracy or to save it from abuse is different from that of its neighbour. Those of us who have been living in Thailand since the country's 18th military coup, in September 2006, were witness to one such clash of ideas and wills. To broaden this understanding of Asian countries in transition towards democracy, the FCCT has the pleasure of hosting a panel discussion featuring respected editors of newspapers from three countries: Pakistan, Nepal and Indonesia. Such relevance has been generated by the recent assassination of former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto, exposing the multiple tensions that plague that country, which has been under the grip of a military dictatorship for nearly a decade. In neighbouring Nepal, on the other hand, the dominant story is the push by the country's powerful political parties to abolish the 240-year-old monarchy, an act that has drawn interest in some of the other kingdoms across the region. Indonesia, by contrast, has generated ...

so called expert {referred to as Professor taylor by the BBC news 24 newscaster} AN interview {on 27 jan 2008} with a so called expert with obviously unchecked references at very short notice in the hours after EX President Suhartos' death this professor was most likely possibly refused a part as the Prof. in the back to the future movie. Possibly would have been better to have had Amy winehouse or Kelly Clarkson on the interview as opposed to this guy. or shrek ?
