Alexandrov Ensemble: Suliko (1960s)
The Alexandrov Ensemble sings "Suliko", conducted by Boris Alexandrovich Alexandrov, recorded 1950s or 1960s. This is a Georgian traditional song. The photo is of the Ensemble marching through London, probably in 1956 (or possibly 1963) to their concert venue. The 1963 venue was the Albert Hall; the 1956 venue was elsewhere. That is Nelson's column (Trafalgar Square) in the background - and of course an old Routemaster bus. ------------------------------------------ FROM WIKIPEDIA: Suliko (Georgian: სულიკო) is a Georgian female and male name meaning 'soul'. It is also the title of a love poem written in 1895 by Akaki Tsereteli, which became widely known throughout the Soviet Union as a song performed with music composed by Varenka Tsereteli. In that form it was often performed on radio during Joseph Stalin's rule, reputedly because it was the emperor's favorite. Ruslan plays Suliko, a Georgian love song. According to wikipedia, it was Stalin's favorite song. I can't substantiate that, but I will paste the lyrics below. If you look carefully at my father in law when my wife sits with him, you can see both joy and sadness in his eyes. My wife moved to the US 11 years ago, and she has not gotten to see her family much in that time. Her father played a critical role in getting her the opportunity to come to the US, and it was a bitter sweet gift to her. He goes on without his only child, while she is also torn between two worlds. I think this scene can be understood by all who leave home, but especially by immigrants who leave their old world behind as they embrace a new life.
