Shopping with the wife today. We needed to pick up a few things from the Asian market so we did most of our traditional Asian food shopping at Lee Lee Supermarket in Peoria Arizona. Lee Lee is a large oriental supermarket that carries everything you would possibly need to make traditional oriental dishes. My review: On a scale of 1 to10 I would give this Lee Lee Store a seven (7). The employees seemed to all be in a bad mood. Did not observe any employee that did't have a frown on their face. I felt like I was bothering them just by being there shopping. The store in general looked very clean and fresh. The produce also seemed fresh. I was in Koreatown in Toronto on Monday afternoon, and I made this short video from inside a big Korean grocery store called PAT. You can buy fresh kimchi, Korean veggies, drinks, noodles, snacks, frozen treats, and even red bean filled pancake fish (called 붕아빵)! I visited this grocery store a lot when I lived in Toronto to get myself ingredients to make the few Korean dishes I know how to make. It's wonderful to be able to buy the exact same foods that you can find in Korea here in Canada. It certainly helps Korean visitors feel more at home when they can buy comfort foods like 떡 and 신라면 :) If you want to visit this supermarket, exit Christie subway station out to Bloor Street, and walk east on Bloor until you reach PAT on the south side. Not to spoil the "secrets" of the sweep, but just some behind-the-scenes stuff for those that are interested: As contestants, prior to the taping of your episode, they let you walk through the supermarket for 10 minutes, so you can get an idea of what things cost. That's one of the reasons you never saw people really looking closely at the prices of things while they were shopping. You had to have a game plan (and I did!) The studio audience isn't nearly as big as they want you to believe. There are mirrors on both sides of the stage. With the exception of the contestants, the audience that is there are paid extras, which is why most of them are only slightly enthusiastic. They tape the inros of several episodes at once, so that once the game play begins, there is no audience. The rest of the game is done in an otherwise silent studio! So all of that extra clapping is added later. The store really was as big as a real grocery store (so to see it put together on a soundstage was pretty amazing). The food was expired, though. And some of them (like the meat) were, as you would expect, props. The winners go home with a check in the amount of their sweep, but the 2nd and 3rd place contestants only got a sweatshirt! So it really was all or nothing, in terms of winning. As for my own performance, as you could tell, at 200 pounds, I did not have the best cardio endurance of my life.
