Compilation of my slow motion Swan clips taken around Reading, UK. The mute swan is a very large white waterbird. It has a long S-shaped neck, and an orange bill with black at the base of it. Flies with its neck extended and regular slow wingbeats. The population in the UK has increased recently, perhaps due to better protection of this species. Some birds stay in their territories all year, while others move short distances and form winter flocks. In cold weather, some birds arrive from Europe into eastern England. Breeds across most of the UK, other than in northern Scotland, mid-Wales and the moors of south-west England. Possible to see anywhere there is a shallow lake, or a slow-flowing rivers, even in urban areas and parks. Filmed in high speed on a Casio Exilim EX-F1 at 300fps and 150fps. Swans were one of the few groups to emerge from the New York No Wave scene intact. The band was formed in 1982 by Michael Gira, and employed a shifting lineup of musicians until their dissolution in 1997. www.roadburn.com http From Last.fm: Swans is an influential band from New York City, New York, United States, active from 1982 to 1997, reformed in 2010, led by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira. Marginally associated with the no wave scene at first, their original sound was slow and heavy, with live performances that were often so brutal and physical that in a number of instances certain audience members were made ill, police were called and venues were shut down. This early physical sound is possibly best heard on the live album Public Castration Is a Good Idea. Their initial style shifted a little by the time Swans released seminal twin albums Greed and Holy Money. The music had sped up, at times being even more punishing than their earlier output. Drum machines and samples were slightly more prominent. Michael Gira was joined vocally by Jarboe which gave the band a broader sonic range. Tracks featuring Jarboe were often quieter, even pretty, acting as counterpoint to the more harrowing themes on the albums. Over time, this style would come to dominate the Swans' output, although they somehow seem to have been able to make a strummed acoustic guitar seem as brutal as their earlier amped-up assaults. The lush instrumentation of their albums from the late 1980s and the 1990's anticipated the birth of post-rock. Sundance Film Festival 2011 "The Hunter And The Swan Discuss Their Meeting"
A Brooklyn couple have dinner with a hunter and his girlfriend, a magical swan woman. It doesn't go well. Programmer's Note: Emily Carmichael is in many ways a Renaissance girl. As a Harvard University undergraduate, she studied painting and literature; wrote and directed two full-length plays; directed a production of "Macbeth: The Puppet Shakespeare" for which she designed and sculpted 22 clay puppets; and created the comic strip "Whiz Kids," which ran in the "Harvard Crimson" for more than two years. In 2006, she entered the MFA film program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where she has written and directed several live-action and animated shorts in addition to a couple of short documentaries. Carmichael's films have screened at the Anthology Film Archives, Slamdance, the South by Southwest Film Festival, and the CineVegas International Film Festival. Her newest film—"The Hunter and the Swan Discuss Their Meeting"—is a modern dating fable set in a magical world where naked swans become human and romantic unions between birds and people are not without their share of problems. It's as funny as it is fantastical and shows Carmichael's ability to bring together two unlikely worlds in one very funny setting.
