a second, unique video of my Midi SEM. Here I play something a little more musical. The synth is monphonic like the MoPho from Dave Smith. Tom O designed it to be almost identical to the version he had in the 1970's. There are two versions of the modern incarnation, a patchpoint module with lots of 3.5 cm jacks (eighth inch) for interfacing with analog modular equipment, and this version which allows use with computers and other midi equipped devices more readily. One note, the image of Tom Oberheim with his boxes is from AudioMidi's website. They handle the retail distribution of new SEMs in the US.

Sorry about the poor sound quality; this was filmed using a cheap digital camera. It's just a quick and easy demonstration of my Novation Nova in action. It's running version 4.1 of the operating system and, as you can probably see, is being sequenced by Ableton Live. No external processing is being used, it's simply the midi out going straight into the Nova and the main audio out of the Nova connected directly to my monitors. All the sounds used in this (Kick, Snare, Hi-Hat and Bass) were programmed from scratch. I'm using the 18db low-pass filter on the bass (there are 12, 18 and 24db to choose from, amongst others), controlling both cutoff and resonance. I also make use of the comb filter on the bass, which can be found in the menu of the distortion effect, for some reason. The only other thing that gets messed around with is the delay on the snare. All pretty basic stuff, but this is only to show it's in working order.

Last year I build a drum module based on schematics from the 'Electronic Drum Cookbook' by Thomas Henry. I build it on breadboard but never got around to test it yet. Yesterday someone was filming my studio here so I couldn't work on my main desk for a while and decided to give the module a go. I hooked it up to my sequencers in the modular setup and got to test them in the process as well. We took some shots of this as well and last night I decided to make a little video from it. The noise coming from it is not spectacular but it was just a proof of concept. I made this video in Sony Vegas and that was also a test run for me. I plan to make more video's in the future for you to enjoy. The music on this video is from a track called 'Mercury' that a made for a sampler CD last year. Additionally, the latest Leipzig synthesizer (Leipzig-s) is featured throughout the video running its internal 8-step sequencer (time triggered via MIDI clock in this example). The Leipzig-s provides the bulk of the sonic architecture in the video, with a few ancillary synths thrown in for good measure. Here is my first DIY module for my modular synthesizer. It was made from a kit I bought from Bridechamber and the panel was custom built in the synthesizers.com format which matches the vintage Moog modular synthesizer. The Module is called the YUSynth Saw Animator. Here is the description from Yusynths website: The Saw Animator module is a very interesting module when you whish to get that FAT sound, usually obtained with two or more sawtooth VCOs, but you are short of VCOs. You can get this typical sound with only one sawtooth VCO, thanks to Bernie Hutchins (JAES, 1981). The Digisound 80 has this wonderful module and Scott Bernardi designed a version of its own. The present module is a somehow simplified but yet efficient version. To get the best of this module, it must be used in conjunction with a mixer. I chose not to integrate a mixer within the module in order to benefit from the dry outputs which are very useful when used with a LFO instead of a VCO. When used with a sawtooth LFO and inputing fixed CVs in the MOD inputs, one can achieve some interesting phase shifted modulators such as quadrature modulation. Well the possibilities are numerous and it's up to your imagination. Also my first video shot with my new Canon T3i 18-135mm camera.

Here is the monster guitarist Blues Saraceno at the Big City Music booth on Saturday at NAMM. He's playing his Les Paul into the Analogue Systems rs35 External Source Processor module, which is a pitch to voltage (1 volt per octave) module. The rs35 is triggering a pair of rs95 voltage controlled oscillators, which are then processed through several other AS modules. The final sound is coming from the tiny 5" Yamaha speaker which was mic'd with a handheld SM-57.

Hi all. This is the same video as the previous one with a couple of minor tweaks where I noticed I had forgotten to do transitions between clips, nothing major. If you already saw the previous one there is nothing new. This video demonstrates the functionality of the MFOS Multi-Function Module (MFM). The MFM has a linear lag processor, an RC lag processor, two 3 input DC voltage mixers with bias control and normal and inverted outputs and lastly a voltage meter with +/-1V, +/-5V, +/-10V ranges.
