Imagine you're driving at the maximum speed allowed on a major highway and you have to suddenly stop the car. In April, a fully-loaded 747-8 Freighter with worn-out brakes attempted an aborted takeoff on a California runway. The rejected takeoff or maximum brake energy test is one of the most dramatic for a new airplane. It's basically what Boeing test pilot Captain Kirk Vining had to do recently with the new 747-8 Freighter during one of the most dramatic airplane certification tests. However, instead of a 4000-pound (1815 kilograms) car, the 747-8 weighed in at close to one million pounds. "In the emergency event that we have to make a rejected takeoff at these heavy weights, it takes a long distance for the airplane to stop," says Capt. Vining. The Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental and 747-8 Freighter are the new, high-capacity 747s that offer the lowest operating costs and best economics of any large passenger or freighter airplane. Both are on track to make their first deliveries later this year after certification. To simulate the ultimate rejected takeoff (RTO), crews loaded the airplane above its maximum takeoff weight of 975000 pounds and installed a set of 100% worn-out brakes. A 1st Class video all the way. Listen to the Trent's rev up (SPEAKERS ON MAX!) as we taxi, hold, take off and then spool down and commence the powerful and long LOOP4 SIDS turn towards London from Los Angeles on a beautiful day. You can see LAX, the beach - Playa Del Rey (no smog!), the turn into the sun over the (few) clouds back over Hermosa Beach and then LA County as we go from west to east towards the Great Lakes and then Greenland and finally to Scotland then England. If you watch carefully during take off, you can see the "AirBUST" A380 aka Flying Junker (Qantas) parked at the satellite terminal because it cannot park at the main terminal. This is one of the best films of a 777 take off. You only get sound (AWESOME ENGINE SOUND) and a view like this from "The Bridge" - that is seat 4J - FIRST CLASS. Also, I dont show you my feet or make you dizzy like other vid's. As we climb, you can hear the Pursar making her announcements as we pass the beach and turn away from the sun and head towards "Blighty". I tried to hold the camera perfectly still for your benefit, but the power was just too much. Still an excellent video. After 10 minutes I started to become tired. So I turned off the camera, pressed recline (to bed position) and took a snooze for a while before my first (of many) scotch and soda's. Please enjoy and post your comments.

The pilot has done an excellent job; - there's a busy public road beyond the boundary fence,less than 50 metres from the end of the runway. Please don't ask me why he aborted; Sorry, I simply don't know. I have been advised that in point of fact this is a (former) IL-22 airborne command post stripped of mission equipment - note the fin tip pod which regular IL-18s do not have. ...WATCH THE WHOLE VIDEO!...especially at 8:30 and the TAKEOFF. Another First Class video - ALL THE WAY! American Airlines Flight 99 - London Heathrow (LHR) to Chicago (ORD). Commander is Captain (Mrs.) Fitzsimmons - a very senior and well respected Pilot at American Airlines and one of the Top 25 in the skies today - worldwide! This video is awesome, loud and has very powerful engines + sound throughout the whole video...watch the whole movie as we power up and down throughout the 10 minutes...I had a hard time holding the camera still as I was sucked back into the massive First Class seat! This was probably THE MOST POWERFUL TAKEOFF I have ever experienced as a passenger. Although not a full PAX payload, we were at MTOW (Maximum Take Off Weight) in part due to a full cargo load. Watch as Captain Fitzsimmons "blasts" off and takes us through the clouds above London towards Chicago (make sure to see the landing too). You can see the engine sucking in half of the air in England and the leading edge of the wing slicing it as we lift off. We made three climbs in between the clouds as she (Cap. Fitzsimmons) masterfully and smoothly took this awesome 777-200 to Flight Level 380 (38000 Feet) cruising altitude. You can hear the Trents whine, growl as we go up and up and then go almost silent ... Please enjoy. Smart comments only! (My apologies for the spec of dirt on the window.) The flight took us via Central America to Colombia and then straight across Brazil via Manaus to Sao Paulo. There was a thunderstorm with big rains this day, so the runway was wet and landings and take off were wonderful ! They was no VFR approaches this day , just ILS cat 1 . Martinique airport has only ILS cat 1, one moment the visibility was too poor for Air France A320 during Short Finale approach and it had to go around ! It was great .
