Music from Talib Kweli's upcoming album, Prisoner of Conscious, out in 2012 on Blacksmith / EMI. "Distractions" is produced by Oh No. The music video is directed by Darryl Phillips, of ICU Media. Download the MP3 of the song for free at www.facebook.com Message from Talib Kweli about the song: "A little less a year ago, I got a beat from one of my favorite producers, Oh No, that I felt would be a perfect sound bed for the album I was working on, Prisoner Of Conscious. As I played the beat over and over trying to write lyrics, I kept finding myself distracted. By the TV, by twitter, by trivial things. I realized then that the beat was asking me to write about Distractions. Beats talk to me. They tell me what to rap about, they suggest a guest for the song. One of the things I was distracted by was the news coming from Tahrir Square last year. The Arab Spring was unlike anything I've seen in my lifetime. Beginning with a vegetable cart owner named Mohammed Bouazizi setting himself on fire in Tunisia to protest general unfair treatment, the Arab Spring spread like wildfire to Sudan and then to Egypt, as thousands of protestors occupied Tahrir Square to call for corrupt president Hosni Mubarak to step down. The first line that I wrote for my song Distractions was, "they say it ain't about the spoils of war, but turn around and tell you how much more the oil will cost." This was inspired by the Arab Spring. Fast forward to September, 2011. Occupy Wall Street exploded into the ...

Habits of the Heart stormed the music scene last year, receiving glowing praise from the likes of People Magazine, RollingStone.com, NylonMag.com, Filter, Bust, MTV Hive, YRB and Vibe.com. The group also drew attention for their unconventional idea to be the first to premiere their full album on Spotify US three whole weeks ahead of release date. From 2000 Album: "Train of Thought"...[Artist info below]..... Get The Music: www.amazon.com & itunes.apple.com The duo of Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek met in Tek's native Cincinnati, Ohio, following the release of the Hi-Tek/Mood collaboration "Hustle on the Side". Kweli and Hi-Tek made their first official collaboration in 1997 on Mood's debut album, Doom, on the track "Industry Lies". That same year, the two formed as Reflection Eternal, and signed to upstart underground hip hop label Rawkus Records. The tracks from their debut single, "Fortified Live" b/w "2000 Seasons", were included on the Rawkus Records compilation Soundbombing in October 1997. In 1998, Kweli and his high school friend, fellow Rawkus Records artist Mos Def, formed the duo Black Star, and released their first, and only album, Black Star, to rave reviews. Hi-Tek provided production for a number of songs on the album, including the singles "Definition" and "Respiration". The album put the three at the forefront of an underground hip hop scene that appeared at the time to be flagging against the influence of the "Jiggy" era of hip-hop, and was followed by a number of acclaimed collaborations and albums. Kweli and Hi-Tek reconnected in 2000 for the release of their debut album, Train of Thought. Though highly acclaimed, the release did not receive a significant amount of commercial attention, despite the success of the rap hits "Move Somethin'" and "The Blast". Following the Train of Thought album, the duo ...

From 1998 Album: "Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star"...[Artist info below]..... Get Black Star's Music: www.amazon.com & itunes.apple.com Black Star arose from the underground movement of the late 1990s, which was in large part due to Rawkus Records, an independent record label stationed in New York City. They released one self titled album. Though the record achieved little commercial success, they (and other members of the Native Tongues Posse) helped shape underground alternative rap and helped bring it further into the mainstream eye. Both have gone on to greater commercial and critical success in separate solo careers. Black Star's emergence into the hip-hop scene came at a crucial point in music history. Following the deaths of both Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur, hip-hop was consumed in a world of chaos. Black Star attempted to bring reconciliation in the wake of these violent deaths. The self titled album contains various references to Biggie and Tupac, and attempts to create reconciliation in the hip-hop world: "I said one, two, three. It's kinda dangerous to be an MC They shot Tupac and Biggie. Too much violence in hip-hop." In 2001, Black Star performed "Money Jungle" with Ron Carter and John Patton for the Red Hot Organization's compilation album Red Hot + Indigo, a tribute to Duke Ellington, which raised money for various charities devoted to increasing AIDS awareness and fighting the disease. In 2005, hip hop website TheSituation.co.uk reported Kweli has ...

Order the triangle shaped, neon blue vinyl: www.fatbeats.com "Time Leak" features Talib Kweli on the verses and Sly Johnson's soulful belting on the hooks. The music video pays homage to The Matrix, Alien, the work of David Cronenberg, and any other spacey cult classic you can name drop. The visuals show Union 'controlling" a female body with their instrumentals, eventually bringing her to life and getting her to dance. This single is available on a very special 12" offering from Fat Beats Records newest and most mysterious signees, Union. It comes on a neon, triangle shaped vinyl in a thick clear plastc poly bag. The A side is main version, along with the banging, spacey instrumental that Union is known for. The B Side contains two remixes: Redefinition Records' Damu the Fudgemunk, and Project Mooncircle's fLako. Union consists of two Parisian producers whose otherworldly approach to analog-driven, melodically abstract, sample free hip-hop inspired Fat Beats Records to extend a label invitation immediately. When a mysterious, monolithic, glossy black package arrived at FBHQ with nothing more than a cryptic note and an unlabeled CD inside, the staff wasn't sure if Stanley Kubrick had risen from the dead to make mixtapes or if their lives were about to be transformed forever. Luckily it was the latter, and today the legendary label is poised to unleash Union's debut album Analogtronics on an unsuspecting Earth in the Dawn of 2012.

www.hardknock.tv Hard Knock Tv's Devi Dev and Nick Huff Barili talk to Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek talk about the early years of Kanye West's career. From Kanye opening up for Kweli to labels not wanting to sign him as a rapper. Kweli says that people didn't see Kanye's vision as an artist and just wanted his beats. Kweli says that he knew "College Drop Out" was a classic when he first heard it. Hi-Tek adds that Kanye is a genius in the same way that Dr Dre is. I personally remember getting the white label vinyl of "Through The Wire" "Two Words" that Kanye paid to press up himself because at that time Def Jam and The Roc weren't pushing him out. I also remember being at the Def Jam office's in NY (during CMJ) with the Rap Attack DJ's telling them that they needed to get behind that record because we were all getting great feedback at our college radio stations. Ye' has come a long way since then! -NHB For more on Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek) check out www.hardknock.tv.
