Video has been released of workers going inside a reactor building at the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan. The footage, provided by the plant's operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), shows staff walking around the No 1 reactor building in protective suits. The images were filmed on Friday, a day after workers entered the site for the first time since shortly after the earthquake and tsunami in March. TEPCO began installing air purifying equipment last Thursday, in a bid to reduce radiation levels and to improve working conditions. On Sunday, the Japanese government approved TEPCO's plan to allow staff to return to the No. 1 reactor building to install a new cooling system, after its main door was left open overnight for ventilation. Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has released footage from inside the crippled nuclear power plant in Fukushima. The pictures, filmed on April 29 but only released on May 4, show some damage inside the Unit 1 building but no water leaks. The operator was preparing to install air purifiers inside the Unit 1 reactor to reduce radioactivity by 95 perc ent over the next few days, allowing workers into the area. Meanwhile, high radiation levels up to 100-1000 times more than normal level were detected on the Pacific seabed near the Fukushima plant. TEPCO released footage for the first time on Wednesday of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant Unit 3 reactor's spent fuel pool. The fuel rods, covered in debris from the March explosions, weren't visible in the footage but officials believe they are largely undamaged. In an operation filmed by a robot camera, 40 milliliters of water was collected from the spent fuel pool. The water is contaminated with high levels of radioactive material which needs further analysis for evaluation.

TEPCO has released multiple videos showing two PackBots navigating inside Fukushima reactors. It comes as the 20-kilometre evacuation area around Japan's paralysed nuclear complex, has become an official no-go zone. The announcement comes after police found more than 60 families still living within the contaminated area. A small group of evacuees have briefly been allowed inside the exclusion zone around Japan's damaged Fukushima nuclear plant. For the first time, the government gave permission for short visits so people could gather belongings and check on their properties. TOKYO -- Local media reports revealed on Monday that the government has ordered Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), owner of the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant to study additional emergency measures to contain the continued leak of radiation into the air, sea and ground. One technique suggested by the central government is for TEPCO to wrap the four reactors in massive sheets. Government sources said the sheeting will be held in place by skeletal structures that will frame the containment buildings. New video footage has been released by the operators of Japan's crippled nuclear power plant, which shows the scale of destruction and workers inside buildings. The Fukushima Dai-ichi complex was badly damaged during the earthquake and tsunami in March. Its operator, TEPCO, has been struggling to restore critical cooling systems knocked out by the disaster. The video released shows water pumping equipment being used at the plant and operators dressed in protective suits surveying the damage inside some of the buildings. Despite fresh data showing worse-than-expected damage inside three reactors, TEPCO still aims to bring the radiation-leaking plant to a stable cold shutdown within six to nine months, as originally planned. Recently repaired gauges show that it is likely that fuel rods in Unit 1 almost totally melted and fell to the bottom of the pressure vessel, in the hours after the quake and tsunami.

Belated release of radiation forecast data The Japanese government is about to begin releasing data projecting the spread of radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant that it initially withheld for fear of causing panic. The data in question is in a computer system called SPEEDI that predicts the spread of radioactive substances based on actual radiation measurements at various locations and weather conditions. A joint task force of the government and Tokyo Electric Power Company says about 5000 undisclosed bits of data will be released from Tuesday. The information will be carried on the websites of the science ministry, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, and the Nuclear Safety Commission. The secretary-general of the joint task force and prime the minister's advisor, Goshi Hosono, apologized for the delay in releasing the data. Hosono said the task force withheld the information because some data were based on overly rigorous assumptions and feared it may trigger panic. But he said the task force now believes that panic can be avoided if it offers proper explanations on the projections. He also promised to promptly release all such data in the future. The utility company said on Thursday that most of the fuel rods are likely to have melted and fallen to the bottom of the reactor. Earlier in the day, it found that the coolant water in the reactor is at a level which would completely expose nuclear fuel rods if they were in their normal position. The company believes the melted fuel has cooled down, judging from the reactor's surface temperature. But it suspects the meltdown created a hole or holes in the bottom of the reactor causing water to leak into the containment vessel. It also suspects the water is leaking into the reactor building. The company is planning to fully fill the containment vessel with water by increasing the amount injected. The company says, however, it must review the plan in light of the latest finding. The earthquake hits the TBS Webcam at 3:36 and the TEPCO webcam a few seconds later. The Honshu Earthquake was a 5.6 and occurred at 16:57:37 UTC. You can see the cameras start to shake on the TBS Cam and then after on the TEPCO Cam. The Japanese Government widened the evacuation zone surrounding the melted down Fukushima nuclear plant. More than 5000 people left their homes on Sunday after being exposed to high levels of radiation. It is now known that a nuclear meltdown did occur inside 3 reactors at the plant.
