Theda Bara - The First Vamp

`A Fool There Was (1914) is the film that made Theda Bara a star, creating the term `vamp to describe a hypnotically alluring woman, and coining the now famous quote: `Kiss me, my fool! (often misquoted as `Kiss me, you fool). Theda plays a heedless homewrecker - credited only as `The Vampire - who casually destroys the marriage of a successful diplomatic who seems powerless to escape her. It was based on a successful stage play, which itself was based on an 1897 poem by Rudyard Kipling, which began: A fool there was and he made his prayer (Even as you or I!) To a rag and a bone and a hank of hair, (We called her the woman who did not care), But the fool he called her his lady fair— (Even as you or I!) The poem, and the idea of the Vamp, originate from an era where there was a growing anxiety about the position of women in society, when questions over whether women had a right to higher education, to vote, to divorce, or even to smoke, were highly controversial. Theda Bara - The Original Vamp

As always, watch till the song ends. This is a show of my favorite silent screen star, Theda Bara. She is known to be The Original Vamp(ire), hence the title. (She's also credited as being the first Gothic girl, which I just thought I'd add) Theda is also famous for having most of her films lost in a fire, including the role that made her a huge star, "Cleopatra." Here there are pictures of her in her different movies, as well as publicity shots. I also tried to make opening and ending credits a bit like a silent film, hence the lines and scratchiness. Originally, I wanted to use "Requiem: Lacrimosa" for this, but was having trouble working with that. Luckily, one of my favorite bands have a song that fits perfectly, since her Vamp is supposed to ruin bring men to their downfalls. The song hints something similar. Anyways, watch it, and I hope you enjoy it.

It is my pleasure and a labor of love to present this Theda Bara tribute & final scenes from one of the few Theda Bara films in existence. Widely regarded as the screen's first true sex symbol -- a leading actress whose charm was built not upon quaint innocence but carnal desire, Theda Bara revolutionized the then-adolescent art of cinematic sensuality. One of the very few Bara films that exist today, A Fool There Was catapulted the actress to stardom in 1915 and introduced the term "vamp". Bara plays the "Vampire," a cunning woman who uses her irresistible charms to seduce and abandon a series of influential men. When one lover commits suicide on the deck of a luxury liner, she merely turns her gaze to another passenger, John Schuyler, leading him down a path to moral degradation and public scorn. Schuyler's wife never gives up hope for her husband's redemption but has severely underestimated the hypnotic power the Vampire has upon her victims. HAPPY WEEKEND! My Friends, today, we have some FUN with Theda Bara. Theodosia Burr Goodman was born in the Avondale section of Cincinnati, Ohio. Her father was Bernard Goodman (1853--1936), a prosperous Jewish tailor born in Poland. Her mother, Pauline Louise de Coppett (1861--1957), was born in Switzerland. Bernard and Pauline married in 1882. The origin of Bara's stage name is disputed; The Guinness Book of Movie Facts and Feats says it came from director Frank Powell, who learned Theda had a relative named Barranger. In promoting the 1917 film "Cleopatra," Fox Studio publicists noted that the name was an anagram of "Arab death," and her press agents claimed inaccurately that she was "the daughter of an Arab sheik and a French woman, born in the Sahara. Bara is often cited as the first sex symbol of the movies. She was well known for wearing very revealing costumes in her films, which could still be considered risqué by today's standards, more than 90 years later. Such outfits were banned from Hollywood films after the Production Code started in 1930, and then was more strongly enforced in 1934. It was popular at that time to promote an actress as mysterious, with an exotic background. The studios promoted Bara with a massive publicity campaign, billing her as the Egyptian-born daughter of a French actress and an Italian sculptor. They claimed she had spent her early years in the Sahara Desert under the shadow of the Sphinx, then moved to France to become a stage <b>...</b>

New Fragment of legendary 'lost' film CLEOPATRA (1917) Found in Coney Island. The hosts (Jack Garcia & Rev. Hal Shaw) of the popular alternative media program God Rock Radio stumbled across the historical clip at a local book exchange on a mislabeled video tape. Unlike the 30 second fragment shown on TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES this newly unearthed footage features fluid camera movement and classic silent screen pantomime acting. Theda Bara was the screen's first sex symbol and made over 40 films, sadly only 2 complete features are known to exist. "We contacted over a dozen film archives" said Writer/Director Jack Garcia, "but they didn't bother to return our phone calls or e-mails. I don't think they believed us, so we decided to make it available to the public".
