Thanks for all of your positive comments, sorry I can't reply to them all individually. Hopefully I can answer most of the FAQ's now.... The failure occurred at about 5pm on Friday 23rd September 2011. It took place on the North Coast of Cornwall. There were only a few people watching, with about the same number of inquisitive seals in the water! There were lots of 'small' failures just before the main event. This appears to be a progressive failure, the frequency and size of the smaller failures increased until the inevitable happened. The sound was incredible, those cliffs are about 150-200ft high. I'd been chatting to the couple mentioned in the clip only a few minutes before the footage was taken. They can just be seen walking away in the distance; the path had been fenced off and diverted, so they were quite safe. An amazing sight, and credit to R who took the video, I still can't stop revisiting it! Thanks again for all the comments, who says Geology isn't an exciting subject?!. Oh, & finally..... I'm happy to report that no seals or humans were hurt in the filming of this clip! ACSM(93)

-- Original uploaded on September 2, 2009 -- Project Orion was the first serious attempt to design a nuclear pulse rocket. The design effort was carried out at General Atomics in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The idea of Orion was to react small directional nuclear explosives against a large steel pusher plate attached to the spacecraft with shock absorbers. Efficient directional explosives maximized the momentum transfer, leading to specific impulses in the range of 6000 seconds. With refinements a theoretical maximum of 100000 seconds (1 MN·s/kg) might be possible. Thrusts were in the millions of short tonnes, allowing spacecraft larger than 8×106 short tonnes to be built with 1958 materials. The reference design was to be constructed of steel using submarine-style construction with a crew of more than 200 and a vehicle takeoff weight of several thousand tonnes. This low-tech single-stage reference design would reach Mars and back in four weeks from the Earth's surface (compare to 12 months for NASA's current chemically-powered reference mission). The same craft could visit Saturn's moons in a seven-month mission (compare to chemically-powered missions of about nine years). A number of engineering problems were found and solved over the course of the project, notably related to crew shielding and pusher-plate lifetime. Pilbara Iron Ore Infrastructure - Phase A and B
Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) awarded McConnell Dowell the design and construction of the Pilbara Iron Ore Infrastructure Project at Port Hedland in Western Australia. FMG is positioning itself as the third major iron ore producer in Australia. MacDow's scope of work included a load-out berth, a lay-by berth and navigation aids. The load-out berth comprises a 100 m long approach jetty complete with roadway and elevated conveyor trusses; a transfer station platform with wharf conveyor, drive and belt change-out areas; and a wharf structure to supports the shiploader. The wharf includes shiploader rails; six independent berthing dolphins including fenders and quick release mooring hooks and controls; and trafficable concrete deck required for maintenance and associated traffic. The lay-by berth comprises eight independent berthing and mooring dolphins with interconnecting catwalks. Included on the berth were remotely controlled quick release mooring hooks and capstans on all dolphins. A total of five new navigation aids were designed and installed within the confines of the Port Hedland Port Authority (PHPA) inner harbour. Piling of the 341 piles were carried out by two piling barges with 350 tonne cranes, and a construction barge with a 180 tonne crane. Each of these barges was in turn supplied by four material/supply barges. In total, 50 tonnes of cargo is being transported in support of the coalition mission in Afghanistan, where the helicopters will be used to transport personnel and equipment. The big payload requires a big aircraft, and the Antonov An-225 is truly one of a kind. There is currently only one An-225 in operation. The unique size of its cargo deck has put the An-225 in demand globally for its heavy-lift capacity and ability to fly oversized payloads. Edmonton-based Canadian Helicopters is transporting a Sikorsky S-61N helicopter, two Bell 212 helicopters and 40 tonnes of support equipment to Afghanistan aboard the An-225. In early April, the load will be joined by another S-61N, which is being repositioned from Australia. Canadian Helicopters has been contracted by the US military to provide the cargo.
