Taipei is friendly and so different to anything in Australia. Giant CKS Memorial Hall, (contains photo of Australian journalist WHDonald 1875-1946 who became known as 'Donald of China'), historic films, CKS replica in his office, Bo-An Buddhist Temple, Noisy street processions, fireworks and beautiful young girls performing. Our third day in Taipei we stopped by a nearby Confucius temple for an early morning chant. Afterwards we rented some bikes and cycled along the bike paths parallel to the river. We also stopped for a midmorning work out at some fitness stations along the route. Our final destination was Bali, where we dropped the bikes off and took a ferry to Tamsui (also written as Dansui and Tansui on some signs we saw). For dinner we had shorompo (sp?) which is a meat bun soaked in savory soup. We also tried Taiwan's variation of General Chow's chicken. (I'm guessing the American version was modeled after the Chinese/Taiwanese version, but wouldn't it be awesome if it was the other way around? Yeah... not likely I know but still...) The girls wanted to get massages. Josh and I said we'd do a 30 minute leg massage, but communication broke down at some point and we endured an hour long back, arms, legs, and feet massage that was painful and boring and time wasted that could have been spent drinking beer... I tried shrimp fried rice (Ebi Chahan) which is commonly served in Chinese restaurants in Japan. I also accidentally ordered a dish that looks a lot like stinky tofu...my old enemy. Oh, and if anybody is wondering, my back is doing better. I still have to take lots of yucky pharmaceutical drugs...like Neurontin, Robaxin, and some others...but I have been swimming and playing more regularly and doing lots of physical therapy exercises. Day 2. After a quick breakfast in the market next to our hotel we took a train and taxi to Juifen in the mountains. It's where Miyazaki drew inspiration for his movie "Spirited Away." There's lots of tea houses and little shops. We went back to Taipei 101 as well, getting beautiful views of the night skyline. Finally, we went to the Shilin Night Market. After a nice holiday in Taiwan, it was time to go back to reality.
