Kim Jong-il dead, North Korea's future uncertain

www.nma.tv North Korean leader Kim Jong-il is dead. State media reported the Dear Leader died on Saturday due to "great mental and physical strain" while on a "high-intensity field inspection." News of Kim Jong-il's death prompted a great outpouring of public grief, though North Koreans could hardly be expected to display any other kind of emotion in the tightly managed Stalinist state. Kim's son, the 20-something Kim Jong-un aka the Bright Leader, is the heir apparent. But the younger Kim is not secure in his power and the elder Kim's death could result in a dangerous power vacuum in what is arguably the world's most dangerous flashpoint and potentially embroil China and the US in a military confrontation in the Korean Peninsula.

www.nma.tv Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh will likely be suspended for at least two games after he stomped on Green Bay Packers' offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith in Detroit's annual Thanksgiving Day game and was ejected. The former Husker has nine personal fouls in his first two years, a league record, and has been fined a total of $42500. If Suh is suspended, he would lose $82000 per game in lost salary.

Bank Transfer Day: Consumers rise up against bank fees

www.nma.tv Mark your calendars. Bank Transfer Day is November 5. That is the day when consumers are encouraged to close their accounts at big corporate banks and take their funds to credit unions. Previously, when paying by debit card, 44 cents would go to banks. The Durbin amendment cut those fees in half. This upset large corporate banks. They vowed to make back the fees somehow. Some banks such as Bank of America are doing so by hitting ATM card users with new monthly fees. Customers such as Kristen Christian are outraged. Christian has declared November 5 shall be Bank Transfer Day. Will it be enough to get the attention of big banks?

Neti pot deaths linked to Amoeba attacks

www.nma.tv Two deaths in Louisiana have been blamed on amoeba infections caused by using neti pots. Neti pots are a kind of device that delivers a nasal rinse, reliving those suffering from congestion and sinusitis. However, users are warned to only use their neti pots with distilled or boiled water because tap water could be contaminated with amoebas that attack the brain. The amoeba lands in the nasal cavity before traveling up to the brain. They literally eat the brain cells, causing encephalitis. Although amoeba infections are thankfully rare, once they take hold, the results are often disastrous. Users of contact lenses have also been warned to take precautions swimming or showering with your contacts in increases your chance of introducing an amoeba infection to your cornea.

Drone Wars: Iran scores publicity coup

www.nma.tv An RQ-170 Sentinel stealth drone sent by the American military into Iraq on a reconaissance mission has been captured by the Iranians. This has been an intelligence disaster for the US, as the drone contains sensitive technology, and a publicity coup for Iran's Mahmud Ahmadinejad. While Americans are still scrambling to figure out how they lost the drone over Iran, another drone crashed in the Seychelles on Tuesday. Drones have also been in the news when a sheriff in North Dakota called for support from a predator drone in the arrest of a farmer who failed to return cattle that strayed onto his property. US president Barack Obama has come under criticism from former Vice President Dick Cheney for not calling air strikes to destroy the drone before it could be captured by the Iranians. Apple vs HTC: Apple scores minor victory in Android fight

nma.tv The US International Trade Commission has given Apple a partial victory in its patent dispute with HTC over the Android operating system. The ruling, however, was more favorable than expected as the Taiwanese company emerged victorious in three of the four patent claims. So what exactly did Apple win? Well, you know how you can tap on a phone number to auto-magically call that number when it appears in an e-mail or text? Apple says it owns that and other user interface features. As a result of the ITC ruling, HTC must discontinue offering the feature in its Android phones. HTC has some time to fix the code in its handsets that run Android, which is provided by Google. From April 19, 2012, HTC will no longer be allowed to import into the United States Android handsets containing the UI features. While it's a small victory for Apple, it's a important step toward the company's long-term goal to crush Android. The late Steve Jobs told his biographer that he wanted Google to stop stealing ideas from Apple. Jobs said: "If you offer me $5 billion, I won't want it. I've got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that's all."

Go Daddy's support for SOPA leads to Reddit boycott

But it's too little too late. The redditors are going ahead with "Leave Go Daddy Day" on the 29th of December. Competitors such as Hostgator and Namecheap has offered special deals with coupon codes such as NODADDY or SOPASucks. This is not the first time Go Daddy has attracted controversy. Founder Bob Parsons is fond of shooting elephants, and the company has been accused of snapping up the domain names of customers who let their accounts lapse. Pandagate: BBC names panda Tian Tian a Face of the Year

www.nma.tv The BBC is in trouble with feminists for choosing a panda named Tian Tian as one of 12 female Faces of the Year. Critics say the pick deprecated female achievement in 2011. The hashtag #pandagate is now trending on twitter, as well as the #realwomenoftheyear tag, meant to counter the Beeb's list. Tian Tian, or Sweetie in English, lives at the Edinburgh Zoo. Pandas, an endangered species, are star attractions at zoos all over the world. But they cannot be owned, only loaned from the Chinese government. Apart from being adorable, however, pandas are pretty much useless. Pandas are relatives of bears who evolved to become vegetarian. However, they are so inefficient at digesting bamboo, their only food source, that they must eat nine hours a day to get the energy they need to survive. The rest of the time, they are probably sleeping. Pandas are also notoriously uninterested in sex for the most part. In short, it's no accident that they are one of the world's most endangered animals despite the massive effort exerted to conserve them. Are pandas so cute they must be saved, or should we just let evolution take its course and let them go extinct?

2012 New Year: A prelude to disaster?

nma.tv People around the world are preparing to celebrate the 2012 New Year, but some who buy into doomsday theories based on Mayan mythology are preparing for what they believe is the beginning of the end times. According to the Mayan Long Count calendar, December 21, 2012 signifies the end of the 13th Baktun, a unit of time measurement equal to about 394 years. What exactly the Mayans believed will happen when the rollover occurs is being debated among scholars and Internet commenters alike. A prophesy engraved on a slab of rock at the Tortuguero archaeological site in Mexico foretells the Earthly arrival of the Mayan god Bolon Yokte, which some alarmists have linked to other, hotly contested predictions involving natural disasters and cosmic events. Detractors feel December 21 will not mean the end of time. They offer the fact that Mayans made mention of dates past the 13th Baktun as proof. As is the case with all doomsday panics, like Y2K at the start of the 2000s and this year's more recent claims from Harold Camping, only time will tell if the year 2012 is anything to fret.

Paterno also knew of the activity, but wasn't charged with a crime. At the center of the scandal is Jerry Sandusky, 67, who is facing 40 counts of various forms of abuse. Prosecutors say he was involved with eight boys between 1994 and 2009. Some sources claim there may be as many as 17 victims. Sandusky allegedly met his victims through his own youth charity, The Second Mile. Curley and Schultz were made aware of the abuses in 2002 when they met with then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary, who reported seeing Sandusky with a 10-year-old boy in a school shower. Other incidents allegedly took place at Sandusky's home and at a high school. One boy claimed Sandusky plied him with lavish gifts and marijuana. The two administrators each posted $75000 bail. Penn State is paying their legal fees, citing the charges have to do with how they performed their jobs. Sandusky was released on $100000 bail.

Is Tim Tebow the Denver Broncos' savior?

nma.tv Fans rejoiced when the Denver Broncos drafted quarterback Tim Tebow in April 2010. His jersey outsold all others that month. However, Tebow was benched in favor of Kyle Orton for most of the season and fell to third-string status in 2011. Fans chanted for Tebow as Orton struggled. Tebow came in midway through a game against the Chargers, but couldn't complete a comeback. The next game, Tebow started against the Dolphins and led his team to an overtime victory after trailing by 15 points. Have the Broncos found their Messiah, or is Tebow just another false football prophet?

WikiLeaks keeps on publishing despite arrest

www.nma.tv Julian Assange through his WikiLeaks website promises greater government transparency. But his document dumps have angered officials around the world. US Senator Joseph Lieberman has pressured internet companies to withdraw their services from WikiLeaks. Rather than protect internet freedom, Amazon and PayPal have willingly complied with US demands. Assange is the subject of death threats. Some government officials say he should be assassinated. Sarah Palin said he should be hunted down like a terrorist. Efforts to take down WikiLeaks have proven futile, thanks to mirror sites. Meanwhile, Assange has been arrested in the UK on rape charges. He has vowed to release more documents in a 'nuclear' option if arrested or killed.

Steve Jobs Dead: RIP 1955-2011; his life and career

www.nma.tv Next Media Animation takes a look back and the life and career of Apple co-founder and chief executive Steve Jobs, who resigned that position late on Wednesday. Our tale begins with Steve Jobs dabbling in LSD and spiritual enlightenment, which Jobs describes as the "one of the two or three most important things [he had] done in [his] life". Man, look at all the colors. Hey, that gives me an idea for a company logo. Jobs would then found Apple with Steve Wozniak and a third guy who cashed out his shares waaaaaay too early, so we didn't bother to animate him. In 1984, Jobs unveiled the Macintosh and forever revolutionized personal computing. But the good times wouldn't last. John Sculley, the executive Jobs hired away from Pepsi, bounced Jobs from the company he founded. Jobs would get his revenge by starting another company, Pixar. He produced 'Toy Story' and sold the animation company to Disney for a fat profit. Jobs finally returned to Apple and defeated arch nemesis Bill Gates to become the baddest mofo in tech. Jobs was then diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and required a live-saving liver transplant. Apple now faces a threat from Google Android. Thankfully, Jobs can pass the baton to chief operating officer Tim Cook.

Oscars 2011 review: your animated coverage

www.nma.tv This year's Oscars tried to attract a younger audience, with James Franco and Anne Hathaway as hosts and frequent references to social networking. But the most memorable moments turned out to be unscripted blunders by Oscar-winners, such as when Best Supporting actress Melissa Leo accidentally dropped the F-bomb. Best Director Tom Hooper uttered the most awkward phrase of the night when he referred to his relationship with actors Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush as a "triangle of man love." While many question whether Hooper deserved his award, no one was surprised to see Natalie Portman win best actress, making her the 5th pregnant woman to win the award. Otherwise, comedian Norm MacDonald's tweets about the Oscars were probably more edifying than the event itself. Maybe he should host next year's ceremony.
