The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum located in Agra, India, built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal is considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Indian, and Islamic architectural styles.[1][2] In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was cited as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage." While the white domed marble mausoleum is its most familiar component, the Taj Mahal is actually an integrated complex of structures. Building began around 1632 and was completed around 1653, and employed thousands of artisans and craftsmen. The construction of the Taj Mahal was entrusted to a board of architects under imperial supervision including Abd ul-Karim Ma'mur Khan, Makramat Khan, and Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. Taj Mahal is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the world. It is built entirely of white marble by the Mughals, the Muslim rulers of India. Its stunning architectural beauty is beyond adequate description, particularly at dawn and sunset. The Taj seems to glow in the light of the full moon. On a foggy morning, the visitors experience the Taj as if suspended when viewed from across the Jamuna river. Taj Mahal was built by Emperor Shah Jahan (died 1666 CE) in the memory of his dear wife and Queen Mumtaz Mahal at Agra, India. It was constructed over a period of twenty-two years, employing twenty thousand workers. It was completed in 1648 CE The architectural design uses the interlocking arabesque concept, in which each element stands on its own and perfectly integrates with the main structure. El Taj Mahal (urdu : تاج محل) es un complejo de edificios construido entre 1631 y 1654 en la ciudad de Agra, India, a orillas del río Yamuna, por el emperador musulmán Sha Jahan de la dinastía mogol. El imponente conjunto se erigió en honor de su esposa favorita, Arjumand Bano Begum — más conocida como Mumtaz Mahal—, quien murió dando a luz a su 14º hijo, y se estima que la construcción demandó el esfuerzo de unos 20.000 obreros.

Taj Mahal, IndiaIslamic architectures most beautiful building, the Taj Mahal, is located on the southern shore of the Jumna Rive close to Agra in Northern India. This mighty mausoleum was built on the orders of the Mogul King, Shah Jehan, for his favourite wife. Surrounding an inner core of stone, the Taj Mahal is mainly of brick construction encased in marble. The marble was transported from quarries about 300 km from Agra and in addition to its richly decorated, precious white marble, red sandstone was also used for its massive main gateway. Floral reliefs, tendrils and other carefully created stone works adorn the buildings magnificent exterior. On its walls there are artistic images taken from the Koran and there are also non-Islamic decorations that were designed by 17th century architects. The stunning Persian motifs of blossom and plants consist partly of precious stones such as diamonds, garnet, sapphires and onyx. In 1629 the wife of the Indian Mogul, Shah Jehan, died at the birth of her 14th child. In her memory, her husband promised to build a mighty monument: the result was the Taj Mahal. It was built between 1630 and 1653 and its Persian character is due to its first architect, Isa Afandi, who originated from Iran. Its onion-like cupolas were a real architectural achievement of their day and the symmetry of the building is truly remarkable. A perfect example of Indo-Islamic architecture, today the Taj Mahal is Indias most famous structure.

In this time-lapse we only actually built the tomb in the center of the complex, but that's the bit most people remember =D The tomb was constructed in 1632 by Shah Jahan (not personally) to commemorate his wife, who died giving birth to their 14th child a year before.
