Eyton Rd - Talya Chalef
Eyton Rd (in development) is a performance art piece combining storytelling with piano playing and slide projection. It is a one-woman performance exploring themes of displacement from a family history outwards. It is a journey through transit stops, old houses, family photographs and faraway ancient maps tracing bloodlines and their choices. Narrating my grandparents story from the Holocaust, my own experience of shifting cities and stories of internally displaced people worldwide, I intend to explore the effects of our need for 'home' or belonging. Using slide-projected images (of family homes, towns or maps from Cape Town, Melbourne, Poland, Lithuania and the UK) projected onto me, I intend to find ways of interacting with these images whilst simultaneously composing a soundtrack on the piano. It is my aim to explore how my body can become a site for these stories, how it can resituate and displace them from their original locale and how I can weave together places, images, homes and facts into a poignant, sensory and evocative performance. In November 2007, Eyton Rd was included in La Mama's Explorations Season. Eyton Rd was awarded La Mama's Inaugural Gwandalan Award to assist in its further development this year.
