German tanks fell short of dominating the battlefield after Stalingrad. To fill the huge gap of German armor vs. the huge numerical superiority of the Allies, Germany turned to a new revolutionary solution. The assault gun. A turretless armored vehicle with a high caliber gun with a low silhouette. Assault guns were cheap to produce and posed a difficult target to hit. The German Army became so desperately short of tanks that assault guns were used as tanks. The Hetzer, Jagdpanzer and Jagdpanther were very successful tank hunters. All were very popular with their crews. All 3 had high velocity guns, with low silhouettes and slopped armor. The Jagdpanther was one of the most successful weapon designs of World War II. The Jagdpanther possessed the excellent L-71 anti-tank 88mm gun. The L-71 was the higher velocity L-56 88mm gun the Panzer VI Tiger used. The low silhouette and heavy slopped armour made the Jagdpanther the greatest of all the tank hunters. The JagdTiger was the most powerful armored vehicle of World War II. However, it was underpowered and used 8 gallons of fuel per mile. Its 128mm gun could destroy any Allied tank at any range. The JagdTiger was nothing more than a moving fortress. Tank Tour: World's Largest Private Collection of Historic Military Vehicles (BB Video)
In today's edition of Boing Boing Video, guest-host Todd Lappin explores a massive collection of historical military vehicles tanks collected by an eccentric Silicon Valley multimillionaire. The recently-departed Jacques Littlefield amassed one of the world's largest and most significant collections of this type, and his collection is now overseen by the nonprofit Military Vehicle Technology Foundation. Snip from their description: "Our goal is to acquire, restore, and interpret the historical significance of 20th and 21st century military vehicles. Domestic and foreign combat vehicles such as tanks, armored cars, self-propelled artillery, and other technically interesting mobile platforms are the focus of the collection. We also maintain an extensive technical library that describes many vehicles down to the part level. Aside from the vehicles, there are towed artillery, antitank, and antiaircraft guns. Military support equipment, inert ordnance, and accessories round out the collection." The foundation is supported by public donations, and you can make one at their website if you dig what they do. this is a nice video about Russian MBT's, showing the T-80, the T-90 and the NEW Superior black Eagle ... The BE is the newest main battle tank (MBT) in service with the Russian army, a further development of the T-80. The BE is fitted with conventional armour plating and nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) protection equipment. The glacis and the turret of BE are covered by the third generation Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armour (ERA). The tank's low rounded turret is centered on the hull and is covered by ERA bricks. This ERA gives the turret an angled appearance, with the ERA bricks forming a clam shell appearance. ERA bricks on the turret roof provide protection from top-attack weapons. The BE is equipped with the Shtora-1 (Russian: Штора-1 or "curtain" in English) countermeasures suite, produced by Electronintorg of Russia. This system includes infrared jammer, laser warning system with four laser warning receivers, grenade discharging system which produces an aerosol screen and a computerised control system. The laser warning system warns the tank's crew when the tank has been 'painted' by a weapon-guidance laser. The BE's electro-optical jammer, the Shtora-1 EOCMDAS, jams the enemy's semiautomatic command to line of sight (SACLOS) antitank guided missiles, laser rangefinders, and target designators. the BE is also equipped with ARENA these tanks are well known for their maneuverability, speed and huge firepower... The Tank Cartridge, 120mm, Canister, XM1028, is a tank round comprised of 1150 (est.) tungsten balls, which are expelled upon muzzle exit. There is no fuse on this round. While the dispersion pattern increases with range as the velocity of the balls decreases, the dense tungsten balls are used to minimize the velocity fall-off. This program responds to the USFK urgency of need signed by the CINC in Dec '99. RAPT Initiative Funding to be used for 6.0M in FY02 to accelerate development by one year earlier than previously planned. This round meets urgent CINC, USFK requirements to provide effective rapid lethal reaction against massed assaulting infantry armed with hand held anti-tank and automatic weapons at close range (500 meters or less) thereby improving survivability. Additionally, this round will significantly increase the tank's lethality and enhance the tank crew's survivability. This additional capability will give the Abrams Tank the ability to survive RPG ambushes and to fully support friendly infantry assaults. The M1028 Integrated Product Team achieved type classification standard of the canister round on 24 June 2005. The achievement followed closely their urgent release action, with rounds from early lots already headed to where they will do the most good. The earlier significant accomplishment happened in 2004 when the IPT successfully reached its milestone C, Type Classification for Low Rate Production Review, and the recommendation for urgent release to <b>...</b>
