Modelled on the University of Cambridge, AMU was among the first institutions of higher learning set up during the British Raj. Originally it was Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College, which was founded by a great Muslim social reformer Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. The University has a campus spread over 467.6 hectares of land. Aligarh Muslim University is a residential academic institution offering more than 280 Courses in traditional and modern branches of Education. Currently the University has almost thirty thousand students, and over two thousand faculty members with over eighty departments of study. It continues to function as a premiere educational institution in India, and draws students from a number of countries, especially countries in Africa, West Asia and South East Asia. Majaz Lakhnawi was a romantic revolutionary poet of who composed the famous anthem (tarana) of Aligarh Muslim University. When Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru visited Aligarh Muslim University, he enquired the students and authorities about their college song or something like it. Having got no concrete answer, he expressed his surprise by saying, "It is very strange that a prestigious university as AMU doesn't have its own college song. " These remarks put a student to unrest and he spent a restless night on this idea. The very next morning, he was ready with a masterpiece which went on to be reckoned as AMU Tarana after being sung at the Strachey Hall for the first time. Ustad Salamat Ali Khan and Ustad Nazakat Ali Khan were born in the heartland of Punjab at Shamchaurasi, district Hoshiarpur, both belonged to a family of traditional musicians representing the Shamchaurasi gharana. It is claimed that the gharana was founded in the 16th century by Mian Chand Khan and Mian Suraj Khan who were contemporaries of Mian Tansen at the court of Mughal emperor Akbar. Prior to the emergence of Ustad Nazakat Ali Khan and Ustad Salamat Ali Khan as exponents of khayal, the gharana specialised in the dhrupad form of singing and was particularly renowned for its tradition of duet performances known as jugalbandi. The tarana is a piece where meaningless syllables are put together in some sort of pattern instead of using words. This specific tarana was composed by the marvelous Pt. Ravi Shankar. (correct that if it's wrong). It is being performed at the Uttoradhikar 8 concert in Astoria, NY hosted by the Bangladesh Institute of Performing Arts (BIPA) featuring Nadeem Ahmad on solo tabla. It was directed by Selima Ashraf. He is accompanying the vocalists listed above in the tarana.

Amir Khan was born in a family of musicians in Indore, India His father, Shahmir Khan, a sarangi player of the Bhendibazaar gharana, served at the court of the Holkars of Indore. His grandfather, Change Khan, was a singer in the court of Bahadurshah Zafar. Amir Ali's mother died when he was nine years old. He had a younger brother, Bashir, a sarangi player at the Indore station of All India Radio. He was initially trained in the sarangi by his father. However, seeing his interest in vocal music, his father gradually devoted more time to vocal training, focusing on the Merukhand technique. Amir Ali was exposed at an early age to many different styles, since just about every musician who visited Indore would come to their house, and there would be mehfils at their place on a regular basis. Also, he learnt the basics of tabla playing from one of his maternal uncles, who was a tabla player. Amir Ali's father died in 1937. Amir Khan moved to Bombay in 1934, and there he gave a few concerts and cut about half a dozen 78-rpm records. Later, he lived for some time in Delhi and Calcutta, but after the partition of India he moved back to Bombay.Singing career Amir Khan developed his own singing style, incorporating the styles of Abdul Waheed Khan, Rajab Ali Khan and Aman Ali Khan. This unique style, known as the Indore Gharana, blends the spiritual flavor and grandeur of dhrupad with the ornate vividness of khayal.
