GIUSEPPE TARTINI (1692 - 1770) Concerto for violin, strings, and basso continuo in A major D. 96 1. Allegro Performed by the Venice Baroque Orchestra Featuring Giuliano Carmignola, violin Directed by Andrea Marcon *Giuseppe Tartini was an Italian composer and violinist. Tartini was born in Piran, a town on the peninsula of Istria, in the Republic of Venice (now in Slovenia) to Gianantonio - native of Florence - and Caterina Zangrando, a descendant of one of the oldest aristocratic Piranian families. It appears Tartini's parents intended him to become a Franciscan friar, and in this way he received a basic musical training. He studied law at the University of Padua, where he became very good at fencing. After his father's death in 1710, he married Elisabetta Premazone, a woman his father would have disapproved of because of her lower social class and age difference. Unfortunately, Elisabetta was a favorite of the powerful Cardinal Giorgio Cornaro, who promptly charged Tartini with abduction. Tartini fled Padua to go to the monastery of St. Francis in Assisi, where he could escape prosecution; while there he took up playing the violin. There is a legend that when Giuseppe Tartini heard Francesco Maria Veracini's playing in 1716, he was so impressed by it and so dissatisfied with his own skill, that he fled to Ancona and locked himself away in a room to practice. Tartini's skill improved tremendously and in 1721 he was appointed Maestro di Capella at the Basilica di Sant ...

Giuseppe Tartini - The Devil's Trill (Third Movement) [HQ]

The story behind "Devil's Trill" starts with a dream. Tartini allegedly told the French astronomer Jérôme Lalande that he dreamed that The Devil appeared to him and asked to be his servant. At the end of their lessons Tartini handed the devil his violin to test his skill—the devil immediately began to play with such virtuosity that Tartini felt his breath taken away. When the composer awoke he immediately jotted down the sonata, desperately trying to recapture what he had heard in the dream. Despite the sonata being successful with his audiences, Tartini lamented that the piece was still far from what he had heard in his dream. What he had written was, in his own words: "so inferior to what I had heard, that if I could have subsisted on other means, I would have broken my violin and abandoned music forever." Disclaimer - I do not own the album cover or the music.

Andrew Bishop, Trumpet 1997 Wichita State University Concerto/Aria Competition Winners Concert May 6, 1997 Concerto in D (G. Tartini) I. Allegro II. Andante III. Allegro grazioso It was my honor to perform the Tartini Concerto in D with the WSU Symphony Orchestra as a winner of the WSU Concerto/Aria Competition. I was equally honored to have my good friend Raymond Linkous direct the concerto. Rehearsals for this performance did not go especially well, and I must admit, I was about as nervous as I can ever remember during this concert (as you can tell by the absolute break-neck tempo I was rushing through the whole way. Haha). I was very pleased with the outcome, however, and remember celebrating mightily at my favorite watering hole at the time, Tanner's Bar & Grill afterwards. Dr. Jay Decker, the director of the WSU Symphony was equally impressed...he couldn't stop congratulating me at the concert and at the reception at his home afterwards. The Devil's Trill Sonata - Giuseppe Tartini (TCD.tv)

In Third Coast Digest's latest TCD.tv installment, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Frank Almond discusses and plays selections from Giuseppe Tartini's "The Devil's Trill" Sonata on Tartini's own violin. Tartini owned the violin, the Lipinski Stradivarius, in the 18th century. Around this time, it was rumored the devil came to Tartini in a dream, challenging him to a violin duel in a bargain for Tartini's soul. The video features selections of Frank Almond performing Tartini's recollection of the Devil's fancy fiddle playing.
