Human Cost - Tate Britain Performance, charcoal and sunflower oil

Human Cost, Tate Britain Performance (87 minutes), charcoal and sunflower oil 20 April 2011 -- First anniversary of the Gulf of Mexico disaster. On the same day, 166 people who work in the arts published a letter in the Guardian calling on Tate to end its sponsorship relationship with BP. "In the year since its catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, BP has massively ramped up its investment in controversial tar sands extraction in Canada, has been shown to have been a key backer of the Mubarak regime in Egypt, and has attempted to commence drilling for oil in the Arctic Ocean. While BP continues to jeopardise ecosystems communities and the climate by the reckless pursuit of "frontier" oil, cultural institutions like Tate damage their reputation by continuing to be associated with such a destructive corporation. The massive cuts to public arts funding in the UK have left hundreds of culturally important arts organisations in a position of great financial vulnerability, which means that the debate about the appropriateness of particular potential corporate sponsors like BP and Shell is more relevant than ever. As people working in the arts, we believe that corporate sponsorship does not exist in an ethical vacuum. In light of the negative social and ecological impacts of BP around the world, we urge Tate to demonstrate its commitment to a sustainable future by ending its sponsorship relationship with BP." LIBERATE TATE COMMUNIQUE #2 It was us and it was art! Last night (28 June), as the Tate celebrated 20 years of BP 'support' for British Art with a Summer Party, Liberate Tate disrupted the proceedings inside and out by pouring hundreds of litres of 'oil'(molasses) and scattering thousands of feathers as the UK's celebrity glitterati watched on in fascination. Sipping Pimms and gobbling canapés many of the guests expressed confusion at whether these striking actions were 'art' or not. Despite inaccurate reporting in various media outlets, Liberate Tate would like to claim full responsibility for these acts of creative disobedience as art - art that refuses to pretend to do politics but is politics, art that makes transforming the world a beautiful adventure. The Tate Summer Party had been planned to be in the museum gardens and involve speeches from BP executives. However, due to the rumours of disruption, Tate was forced to hold the entire event inside the museum and no speeches were made. As the evening sun baked down on the stone courtyard of Tate Britain and members of the cultural and corporate elite made their way into the party, 13 figures dressed in black, their faces veiled, appeared from around the corner. In a mournful procession the art-activists approached the entrance carrying large barrels branded with the BP logo. Dozens of photographers and TV cameras swarmed and a moment of tense silence enveloped the area. Something was going to happen. Then in a ...

artreview.com presents: Martin Creed at Tate Britain

Seven years after his controversial Work No. 227: The lights going on and off, which consisted of just that, in an empty gallery at Tate Britain, British artist Martin Creed returns to his crucible with Work No. 850. Every 30 seconds from now until November, a single runner will sprint the length of the empty Duveen Galleries. Creed, whose practice typically involves raw physicality, pseudo-autistic repetition, and the slightest alterations to materials and spaces, says Work No. 850 is about exhibiting life lived fully, and the comfort of regularity. Skye Sherwin, deputy editor of ArtReview magazine, caught up with Creed on the opening day of the exhibition.

English National Ballet in residence at Tate Britain - The Frugal Repast

Duveen Galleries 27 February -- 4 March 2012 English National Ballet brings Tate Britain's Picasso & Modern British Art exhibition to life with ballet classes, participatory workshops, rehearsals, performances and the opportunity to draw from life. Inspired by Picasso's visionary costume and set design work with the Ballets Russes, this collaboration offers a rare insight into how English National Ballet rehearses repertoire and creates new work with a free week-long programme. The artistic culmination of the residency will be three ballets commissioned by English National Ballet especially for Picasso & Modern British Art, premiered in the Duveen Galleries during Late at Tate Britain: Picasso on Friday 2 March 2012.

This is Britain

This is Britain: The Home of British Art Vivienne Westwood and Lauren Laverne know theirs. So does Jon Snow. But which two works by British artists in the Tate Collection that you think speak to each other would you choose? Visit the Tate Collection online - www.tate.org.uk Tell us on Tate's Facebook page - www.facebook.com Tweet your reply to @Tate using #thisisbritain - twitter.com As recent visitors to Tate Britain will have noticed, the gallery spaces here are undergoing something of a transformation, all of which will be revealed next year. These changes have given us a great opportunity to think afresh about British art, as well as ask art lovers which works by British artists (or artists working in Britain) over the last 500 years, appeal to them the most, and why. So, to help shine a light on what's in the BP British Art Displays at Tate Britain, we have made a series of short films featuring some of our supporters choose two works currently on show. Presenter Lauren Laverne talks about childhood reminiscences in front of Millais's Ophelia and Pauline Boty's rendition of Marilyn Monroe in The Only Blonde in the World; fashion designer Vivienne Westwood describes her love of London through the eyes of Frank Auerbach and James Abbott McNeill Whistler, while comedian Adam Buxton takes a sideways look at 18th century portraiture. Not only do these juxtapositions echo our own poster campaign, their opinions (as well as those by musician Ghostpoet, iconic news reader ...

TateShots Issue 15 - Martin Creed

An old friend of TateShots, we caught up with Martin Creed once again -- this time to talk about his new project at Tate Britain. Work No. 850 consists of runners dodging visitors as they sprint through the gallery as fast as they can. It happens every thirty seconds, jolting this normally serene space for an instant. In this interview, Martin tells us about some of the ideas behind the piece, how it makes him laugh, and why art is 'just a word'.

London Rising Tide Greenwash Guerillas Invade BP Sponsored Tate Britain On Friday 4 January 2008 the Rising Tide Greenwash Guerilla Brigade decided to pay Tate Britain a lil' visit. Following the previous day's successful action at the Shell headquarters the group had a die-in while Iggy and others decided to hand out informative leaflets on what BP are up to in the world. Needless to say security immediately jumped in, but their forceful words were wasted due to incredible mandatory politeness. No injuries were reported and no paintings were removed and sold on the illegal art market. For more information: risingtide.org.uk www.artnotoil.org.uk www.londonrisingtide.org.uk

Classified: Contemporary Art at Tate Britain

Classified will offer visitors to Tate Britain the opportunity to see exceptional works by leading contemporary artists and to explore the recent development of Tates outstanding collection. Artists represented in the exhibition will be: Phillip Allen, Gillian Carnegie, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Martin Creed, Tacita Dean, Jeremy Deller, Mark Dion, Ceal Floyer, Damien Hirst, Simon Patterson, Peter Peri, Fiona Rae, Simon Starling, and Rebecca Warren. Classified will focus on the way artists use ordering systems in their work, exploring how our need to classify affects our perception of the world. The exhibition will address this desire to collect, order and categorise, and will show how artists often use these networks and relationships in ways that reveal the inherent instability of meaning. The works in this exhibition employ a variety of methods and approaches, but are united by the artists engagement with the ways we all codify the objects and images that surround us as part of our daily life.

Dub Ya War - Live at Tate Britain

'Dub Ya War' documents the 'Don't attack Iraq' protests in London 2003-2006. Mixed live to dub-reggae music with use of ambient sound from the marches and a hard hitting visual style. (This version was mixed live at the 'Protest' Late at Tate event, Tate Britain art gallery, London.) The film is mixed down live using VJ techniques to a dub-reggae soundtrack performed by Prodical and covers 6 London protests , before during and after the war in Iraq 03. Interspersed with the protest footage is Prelinger archive cold war propaganda, remixed to give a different meaning 50 years later. Textual information provides another layer of meaning and underlines the documentary basis of the film. Performed at Gluerooms, East London 2005 alt.docFest - Sheffield 14 Nov 2004 Filmstock international film festival, Luton 6 June 2005 Previously shown at 'Digital Activism' 22 April 03 , Institute of Contemporary Art, London Cybersonica International festival of music and sound 20th June 03, Institute of Contemporary Art, London Big Chill Festival 03 ,part of 'Hit n Run' cinema.
