Bar Stool Economics and How Taxes Work

Lee Doren from HowTheWorldWorks created this video. HowTheWorldWorks has been around for about two years. Mother Jones Chart: goo.gl Original Story: goo.gl Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this: The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1. The sixth would pay $3. The seventh would pay $7. The eighth would pay $12. The ninth would pay $18. The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59. So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. "Since you are all such good customers", he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20". Drinks for the ten now cost just $80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his "fair share?" They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay. And so: The ...

Paying income tax in America is Voluntary

When you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit. Idiot Harry Reid maintains that paying income tax is voluntary in the US. Harry Reid is the Majority Leader in the US Senate. Forced Taxation Is Immoral

This video is directed at those who tell themselves, and try to convince the rest of us, that they don't mind paying taxes; and it's especially directed to those who take it even further by insinuating that it is a moral or and social duty to do so, that's it's a part of some "social contract".

Seven Reasons Why Tax Increases Are the Wrong Approach

This Economics 101 video from the Center for Freedom and Prosperity gives seven reasons why the political elite are wrong to push for more taxes. If allowed to succeed, the hopelessly misguided pushing to raise taxes would only worsen our fiscal mess while harming the economy. The seven reasons provided by the video against this approach are as follows: 1) Tax increases are not needed; 2) Tax increases encourage more spending; 3) Tax increases harm economic performance; 4) Tax increases foment social discord; 5) Tax increases almost never raise as much revenue as projected; 6) Tax increases encourage more loopholes; and, 7) Tax increases undermine competitiveness

More taxes to save US from bankruptcy?

The latest US government efforts to raise the country's mammoth 14.3 trillion dollar debt ceiling, have collapsed - after a Republican opposition leader walked out of negotiations with President Obama. Unless the government can agree to raise the debt limit by August the 2nd - the country will be unable to pay its bills and will have to declare default. And the effects are being felt already - as the US Federal Aviation Authority, which oversees all civil flights, begins to shut down. But critics say that it's unlikely either side will offer a solution, be it more taxes or spending cuts. RT's New York resident - Lori Harfenist, went onto the streets of the Big Apple to gauge public opinion on more taxation. RT on Twitter: twitter.com RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com

So it should come as no surprise that as corporate profits reached an all-time record in the third quarter, leading voices in the Republican Party want their tax bill slashed, too. As the New York Times reported Tuesday, happy days are indeed here again for corporate America "American businesses earned profits at an annual rate of $1.659 trillion in the third quarter, according to a Commerce Department report released Tuesday. That is the highest figure recorded since the government began keeping track over 60 years ago, at least in nominal or noninflation-adjusted terms." Those numbers should be taken with a grain of salt. Having slashed costs and reaped the benefits of big productivity gains at this early stage of the recovery, US firms are sitting on a mountain of cash.
