TEDDY WILSON - Rosetta

RECORDED IN 1934. Theodore Shaw "Teddy" Wilson (November 24, 1912 July 31, 1986) was a jazz pianist from the United States born in Austin, Texas. His sophisticated and elegant style graced the records of many of the biggest names in jazz, including Louis Armstrong, Lena Horne, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. He is considered one of the most influential jazz pianists of all time.Wilson studied piano and violin at Tuskegee Institute. After working in the Lawrence "Speed" Webb band, with Louis Armstrong and also "understudying" Earl Hines in Hines's Grand Terrace Cafe Orchestra, Wilson joined Benny Carter's Chocolate Dandies in 1933. In 1935 he joined the Benny Goodman Trio (which consisted of Goodman, Wilson and drummer Gene Krupa, later expanded to the Benny Goodman Quartet with the addition of Lionel Hampton). The trio performed during the big band's intermissions. By joining the trio, Wilson became the first black musician to perform in public with a previously all-white jazz group. The noted jazz writer and producer John Hammond was instrumental in getting Wilson a contract with Brunswick, starting in 1935, to record hot swing arrangements of the popular songs of the day, with the growing jukebox trade in mind. He recorded fifty hit records with various singers such as Lena Horne and Helen Ward, including many of Billie Holiday's greatest successes. During these years he also took part in many highly regarded sessions with a wide range of important ...

The Soul of Ben Webster - His Emotional Tenor Saxophone

Teddy Wilson, piano; Ben Webster, tenor saxophone. Look carefully after Teddy Wilson's solo and you'll see tears streaming down Ben's cheek. Benjamin Francis Webster, 27 March 1909, Kansas City, Missouri, USA, d. 20 September 1973, Amsterdam, Netherlands. After studying violin and piano, and beginning his professional career on the latter instrument, Webster took up the tenor saxophone around 1930. He quickly became adept on this instrument; within a year he was playing with Bennie Moten and later worked with Andy Kirk and Fletcher Henderson. In the mid-30s he also played briefly with numerous bands mostly in and around New York, including spells with Duke Ellington. In 1940 he became a permanent member of the Ellington band, where he soon became one of its most popular and imitated soloists. Although he was with the band for only three years, he had enormous influence upon it, both through his presence, which galvanized his section-mates, and by his legacy. Thereafter, any new tenor saxophonist felt obliged to play like Webster until they were established enough to exert their own personalities. After leaving Ellington, he led a small group for club and record sessions and also played with several small groups led by artists such as Stuff Smith and Henry 'Red' Allen. In the late 40s he rejoined Ellington for a short stay, then played with Jazz At The Philharmonic. From the 50s and on throughout the rest of his life, he worked mostly as a single, touring extensively ...

Lady Be Good Dutch Swing College/Teddy Wilson 1976

Lady Be Good Dutch Swing College/Teddy Wilson 1976 In 1977 in Toronto we were very lucky to find out that The Dutch Swing College would go on a tour through Canada and Arie Ligthart, former banjoist with the band, but then their manager, phoned me and asked if we would be able to organize something. We had started a long term contract in DJ's Tavern in the brand new hydro building and we were able to set up three nights with the DSC and our own Climax JB in a double feature event. The room holds 330 people and each night we had a sell out with standing room only. The band you see here is just that band, playing the year before in a concert in Austria which also featured famous pianist Teddy Wilson. In the band are leader Peter Schilperoort clarinet, Bert de Kort on cornet, Bob Kaper alto sax, Dick Kaart trombone, Jaaap van Kempen guitar, Henk Bosch van Drakensteyn bass and Huub Janssen drums. Today, some thirty years later, Bob Kaper is their leader and after an absense for a number of years Bert de Kort is back in the band as well.

Avalon - Teddy Wilson with DSC 1976

Avalon - Teddy Wilson with DSC 1976 In 1the seventies pianist Teddy Wilson recorded several LP's with the Dutch Swing College. Therefore it was a real pleasure to receive a film from a jazz friend in Germany of a filmed concert in Austria in 1976. Clarinetist Bob Kaper has always been a fan of Benny Goodman. Next to the Dutch Swing College he runs his own group called the Flashback Quartet who play many of the Goodman arrangements. So it is no wonder when Teddy Wilson did a concert with the band that one of these Goodman quartet tunes was being played. Bob swings just as hard as Goodman but still has his own sound. In the end they pick up on the standard Goodman arranged end. Wonderful job, Bob!
