This is a good friend of mine Phil Hamilton who runs Spire Ridge Reptiles in Midgham Berkshire. Phil has worked with reptiles most of his life and runs, in my opinion an awesome store with tons of fantastic animals. This is my rescued adult Argentine Black & White Tegu! Currently she is approximately 4 years old and 3' 4". As you can see in the video she's very curious as well as very comfortable with me already. By this video I've had her for a few days so she is getting lots of food in that once empty belly! Oh yes... her name is Teeju :) Enjoy the vid! First of many.... (UPDATE:) teeju is a spoiled lizard! she now has 2/3 of her day free roam and she sleeps in bed with us a few nights a week, literally! Going more into detail on my yearling 1.1 Tupinambis merianae enclosure. I added some features compared to the last video I made. This is how I keep mine indoors. Come summer I will make another video of their outdoor enclosure. This is suitable for my yearlings but I will eventually have to upgrade to a larger indoor enclosure. The next size will be an 8x4x3 ft (LxWxH). The outdoor enclosure will be 10x10 ft. This species requires a lot of room so make sure you can provide that before purchasing! I would just like to point out that most people do not use Mercury Vapor bulbs and fluorescents simultaneously. If done improperly you risk having your reptile exposed to too much UVB. I have a Solarmeter 6.2 and can properly measure the outputs. If you're going to use a fluorescent, I advise using regular halogens or spot bulbs to provide the heat. Kayla, the calico kitten, has her first real experience with a reptile (Brandy, the Blue Tegu). Many people have been asking about Brandy and whether or not they can buy him. Here's a note for everyone: Brandy is my 8 year old male blue tegu. He is like a child to me and has been with me a very long time. You would have to hold me at gunpoint and pry this lizard out of my dead, clenched arms to get him. So, no. Brandy is not, and never will be for sale. You can have the cat, though lol.

Exotic Pets - Red Tegu - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Here we have a red tegu. Red tegus are teiidae. They come from South America, Argentina and Brazil. And these get up to about four feet long. As you can see, they are kind of feisty . They are very tame and stay fairly calm as they grow. This is just a little baby right now. They are omnivorous. They actively eat just about anything that is edible. In the wild they will eat small insects, small mammals, fish, baby birds, lots of vegetables, lots of fruit that find on the forest floor and out the savannahs. In captivity they eat almost the same thing. We feed them pre-killed mice, crickets, cockroaches. They like canned dog food. We have a specialty monitored tegu diet that they eat. They will also eat moss. They will eat fish. And, then, they eat a lot of greens. And they like fruit, such as honeydew, cantaloupe, strawberries, grapes. They do very well. They will get very large so you need a big cage to keep these in, giving them a lots of room. A heat lamp, with a full spectrum of light. And a large water bowl, big enough for them to sit in. And then, of course, a plate for their food. And they do very, very well. They have very good eyesight, a very good sense of smell, very good hearing, they have got very sharp claws which you need to keep trimmed and of course, they have got this wonderful big tail. These are some of the nicest lizards you can get if you want a really large pet.

These tegus are housed outdoors year round. We have three 33 ft x 33 ft cages in which we keep about 10 to 13 adults per cage. The remaining tegus are housed in smaller cages. Each of the big cages have two man-made hiding places for the tegus. These consist of a plastic dog house burried about 2 ft underground, with the roof of the dog house being more or less even with the top of the ground level. Cover this hiding hole with plastic sheeting, carpet, hay, and leaves in winter time. Access to this underground nest is via a large PVC pipe, about 5 feet long. Position the nest in a place that gets good drainage, preferably on the high side of the cage. Position the PVC pipe so that it does not allow water to enter into the hole. You can use bends if so desired.

A brief look at all our tegu cages. This is part 1 of 2, as youtube only allows 10 minute videos max. This is how you keep 350+ adult tegus at once! Concrete, rebar, steel, etc. This is the only way to keep tegus in large numbers and to keep them healthy AND happy. Tegus, like all other reptiles, need cages with microclimates. They need to be able to regulate their temperature themselves, as they are cold blooded animals. These cages are designed with that in mind. We are the largest and first breeder of tegus outside of South America. We are in fact bigger then all other USA breeders combined. We are also the first ones to breed the hybrid tegus.
