Quick 5 minute Tektronix Mixed Domain Oscilloscope MDO4000 Demo


This video is a very quick 5min demonstration of the new Tektronix MDO4000 - a Mixed Domain Oscilloscope. Its the first scope of its kind that adds a time-correlated Spectrum Analyzer to a Mixed Signal Oscilloscope, thereby giving you one instrument that includes 4 analog scope inputs, 16 digital inputs, and one dedicated RF input. The Spectrum Analyzer is very nice, large screen, basic spectrum analyzer which includes some very "non-basic" features. These include a Spectrogram display (to show spectral history of the acquisitions), as well as RF Amplitude, Frequency or Phase vs. Time displays. However, the REAL power of this instrument is that it ties all three of the domains (Analog, Digital and RF) together with a common acquisition and trigger system - which makes it possible to view signal activity on all inputs with full time correlation across the channels. The example shown illustrates the multi-domain capture of a Phase Locked Loop circuit as it is turned-on (enabled), receiving a command to tune to a new frequency, and then capturing the loop behavior as it slews and settles to the new programmed frequency. This example shows the ability to decode and trigger on a 3-wire digital SPI bus command that is being sent to the PLL, and capturing several analog signals and the RF activity during the entire process. This video just touches on a few of the features of this very cool new tool.

Tektronix 321a Oscilloscope


Using the Tektronix 321a oscilloscope to view waveforms from a cheap op-amp function generator. The focus potentiometer was broken so I replaced it with a couple 1 Mohm resistors (I didn't have a 1 Mohm potentiometer so I just picked fixed values). Scale illumination doesn't work either, both bulbs are intact however, so there must be a problem somewhere else. The vertical amplifier has some minor issues, the volts/division knob needs to be moved around the detent in order for it to display correctly, could just be dirty contacts inside, but the vertical amplifier is pretty buried so I'm not going to attempt to fix it. Otherwise, this scope is in pretty good condition. It was donated to the Cal Poly Robotics Club a while back. Tektronix MDO4000 Spectrum Analyzer quick comparison to entry level analyzer


This video takes a very brief look at the basic noise floor and sweep speed performance of the spectrum analyzer portion of the new Tektronix MDO4000 Mixed Domain Oscilloscope to a basic entry level swept spectrum analyzer. Both analyzers are set to the same set of settings, and the sweep speed / spectrum update rate are compared. The integrated spectrum analyzer in the MDO is intended to be comparable to the performance of conventional entry level class spectrum analyzers similar to the Agilent ESA-L E4411B that is used in this video for comparison. The Tek MDO is shown to be considerably faster at narrow resolution BW, while also featuring a noise floor that is more than 10dB lower. Note however that my E4411 analyzer is a 75ohm model, and includes a 50-75ohm min-loss pad at the input and it's attenuation is accounted for on the display. Thus, the noise floor of this analyzer is higher than you would see on a 50ohm model. From the E4411 datasheet, the DANL of the 50ohm model is similar to the DANL for the analyzer in the MDO. The Tektronix MDO is a new class of instrument - it is a 4-channel oscilloscope which also includes 16 digital channels (mini logic analyzer), and one dedicated RF channel (spectrum analyzer). All three of these input domains share a common trigger and acquisition system which makes it possible to simultaneously capture signals in all three domains, all time correlated. Transient EMI Debug using Tektronix MDO4000 Mixed Domain Oscilloscope


This video shows an example of using the Tektronix MDO4000 Mixed Domain Oscilloscope to track down the source of a transient EMI problem on a circuit board. A near-field magnetic loop probe is used to scan the board for RF emission. The MDO is used to trigger on a transient RF source. The repetition rate of the RF burst is determined, and the source of the problem is located on the board.

There are two pulses per 1/2 sine or 4 pulses for a complete cycle: one pulse each for arc initiation and arc extinction, giving four pulses per complete 60 Hz cycle. DIY Scanning Electron Microscope - Tektronix contest entry


Vote for me here: mytektronixscope.com I am using my Tektronix 2246 analog oscilloscope to show the image generated by my DIY electron microscope. The 2246 is operating in XY mode, with the channels connected to a raster scan generator. The vertical scanning frequency is about 30Hz and the horizontal frequency is about 10KHz. The trace brightness (Z axis) is modulated with the secondary electron signal from the microscope.

Matching 6V6 Vacuum Tubes With The Tektronix 576 Curve Tracer


This video shows our new method of matching power triodes, pentodes, and beam power tubes. We are using a specially modified Tektronix 576 curve tracer. It has custom mods that allow tubes to be plugged into this solid state curve tracer, with input jacks for the heater and, for pentodes, the screen voltages. A curve tracer shows output plate current at up to 10 different grid bias points, and at up to maximum operating voltages, all at the same time on the screen, something no tube tester can do. Much more accurate matching can be done with high power tubes, with this instrument. Watch as we test the output curves of some classic RCA 6V6GT tubes.
