Intended as a "home music lesson", this German music periodical, the first of its kind, appeared every two weeks in the form of a four-page Lection meaning a reading or a lesson. It consisted of actual music, new music just composed and given its first circulation in this unusual fashion. Much of it was by Telemann himself, but other contemporary composers were also represented, such as Keiser, Pezold, Görner, Bonporti, Zelenka, Ritter and Stoltzer. Unfortunately the individual issues were not dated, nor is it known how long the periodical appeared for. Twenty-five of these periodicals have come down to us with their contents.

Georg Philipp Telemann-Tafelmusik-Overture for 2 oboes, strings & continuo in B flat major-TWV 55:B1

Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) Georg Philipp Telemann (14 March 1681 -- 25 June 1767) was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist. Almost completely self-taught in music, he became a composer against his family's wishes. After studying in Magdeburg, Zellerfeld, and Hildesheim, Telemann entered the University of Leipzig to study law, but eventually settled on a career in music. He held important positions in Leipzig, Żary, Eisenach, and Frankfurt before settling in Hamburg in 1721, where he became musical director of the city's five main churches. While Telemann's career prospered, his personal life was always troubled: his first wife died only a few months after their marriage, and his second wife had extramarital affairs and accumulated a large gambling debt before leaving Telemann. Telemann was one of the most prolific composers in history (at least in terms of surviving oeuvre) and was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the leading German composers of the time—he was compared favorably both to his friend Johann Sebastian Bach, who made Telemann the Godfather and namesake of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, and to George Frideric Handel, whom Telemann also knew personally. Telemann's music incorporates several national styles: French, Italian, and Polish. He remained at the forefront of all new musical tendencies and his music is an important link between the late Baroque and early Classical styles.

Georg Philipp Telemann Fantasia 1 in A, TWV 40:2 Vivace-Allegro

Telemann's cycle of fantasias for flute dates from the late 1720's, and is among the works that he engraved himself: the sole surviving copy of the fantasias may thus be regarded as an autograph copy. Certain errors and corrections in the engraving make me wonder if he was not composing these works "on the fly" as he engraved. (He is said to have been able to engrave up to nine or ten plates per day). It is essential to understanding the fantasias to regard them as a cycle, not simply as discrete works. The movements of the fantasia in A-Major are a vivace that includes several affective adagio-allegro tempo changes, followed by a minuet marked allegro. It is a wonderful "lend me your ears" rhetorical introduction to the cycle. The painting is a portrait of Johann Joaquim Quantz, here proudly displaying his flute with enharmonic keys for d-sharp and e-flat. Quantz proposed the Telemann fantasias as the musical material for a contest with an amateur player who had written extensively but nonsensically about flute technique. As usual my performance is live and unedited. Thank you for listening!

Telemann Flute Fantasy in A Major NYSSMA

visit Nina at www.realfluteproject.com for free flute tutorial videos, performances and for information about webcam lessons with Nina The Telemann Fantasies are among my favorite pieces for solo flute. I have my students learn them as etudes because they encompass a wide variety of keys, meters, tempi, articulations, and technical demands of sound and embouchure (especially in the wide leaps). I personally enjoy experimenting with ornamentation, especially on repeats. I require my students to write their own ornamental variations which is a great exercise for understanding phrase structure and Baroque style. My favorite flute recording of all time is Jean-Pierre Rampal's version of these pieces. There are many, many ways to interpret these pieces including playing them with or without vibrato, so I never get tired of playing them. The performances here are my interpretations at that moment. I will probably play them differently the next time!

Hidden treasures - Georg Philip Telemann - Ouverture burlesque (1717-22)

History (based on the Grove Dictionary of Music): The history of classical music, like any other art form, is hinged upon a myriad of over-amplified legends and ironic twists of fate. Georg Philip Telemann (1681-1767) is a striking example of the latter: virtually forgotten in the 19th century and rediscovered only in recent times, the composer's contemporaries were virtually unanimous in counting Telemann among the best composers of his time, comparing him favorably to composers of his own generation, namely Bach and Handel, and even writing, after his death, that "his name is his eulogy". Though showing signs of a great talent at an early age, Telemann was pushed by his family toward studying law, but even in his university career at Leipzig he gravitated toward music. After his efforts to conceal his musical gifts from the other students were confounded by a room-mate discovering a setting of Psalm VI that had somehow found its way into his luggage, Telemann's musical career went on almost without obstacle to the highest degree of excellence... Let us consider, however, the genesis of the presented work. Little is actually known about the time, place or occasion in which the "Ouverture burlesque" was written, as the work was not published in Telemann's time. However, its patina of Francophone grace is undoubtedly the result of the composer's first extended project. Telemann left Leipzig by early June 1705 to become Kapellmeister to Count Erdmann II of Promnitz at Sorau ...

Telemann, Paris Quartet III, first movement (animated balls+bars)

The first movement of Georg Philipp Telemann's third Paris Quartet, performed by Concerto Amabile, accompanied by an animated score. FAQ Q: Who is playing this piece? A: This performance is from 1990; the performers are the members of the group Concerto Amabile (Kathleen Kraft, traverso, Elizabeth Blumenstock, violin, Elisabeth Le Guin, violoncello, and Phebe Craig, harpsichord) joined by viola da gambist Margriet Tindemans. Q: This is lovely; where can I hear the rest of the movements of this piece? A: This recording is from the Wild Boar CD "Concerto Amabile, George Phillip Telemann, 'Paris' Quartets 2, 3 & 6" (WLBR8801). I don't know whether the CD is available, but I'm going to find out; I will post information here when I do. Q: I don't like that balls(/bars) display; can I see this with the bars(/balls) display? A: Yes, I've done both versions; here's the balls: www.youtube.com and here are the bars: www.youtube.com and if you can't make up your mind, here's one with both www.youtube.com Q: How did you get the animation synchronized with the recording? A: First I entered the score into the notation program Sibelius. Then, I made a half-speed version of the recording (with the Amazing Slow-Downer software), and adjusted the notation to match (added the ornaments, shortened notes, mistakes made by the performers, etc). Then, while listening to the half-speed recording, I recorded a MIDI click-track. Finally, I fed the score and the click-track into some software I ...
