A temazcal is a type of sweat lodge which originated with pre-Hispanic Indigenous peoples in Mesoamerica. The word temazcal comes from the Nahuatl word temazcalli ("house of heat"). In ancient Mesoamerica it was used as part of a curative ceremony thought to purify the body after exertion such as after a battle or a ceremonial ball game. It was also used for healing the sick, improving health, and for women to give birth. It continues to be used today in Indigenous cultures of Mexico and Central America that were part of the ancient Mesoamerican region for spiritual and health reasons. It is currently being recovered by all sectors of society in that part of the world and is used as a cleansing of mind body and spirit. The sweatlodge in Mesoamerica is usually a permanent structure, unlike in other regions. The temazcal is usually constructed from volcanic rock and cement and is usually a circular dome, although rectangular ones have been found at certain archeological sites and this shape is also used. To produce the heat, volcanic stones are heated (volcanic stones are safe because they do not explode from the temperature)and then are placed in a pit in the temazcal,located in the center or near a wall.

Ceremonia de Temazcal en Inti Waka -Temazcal o Temazcalli El temazcalli es un baño de vapor ancestral que se realiza en construcciones naturales que representan el vientre de la Madre Tierra. Su propósito: la confrontación de nuestras partes obscuras para que el espíritu pueda renacer más libre de como entró. Se realiza en cuatro puertas en las que se sanan los cuerpos físico, emocional, mental y espiritual. El ritual se inicia con el encendido del fuego y se acompaña con cantos emanados de la tradición. El temazcal implica —según los ancianos— aprender a trabajar con los espíritus del fuego, el agua, el aire y la tierra ya generar las condiciones para la liberación y transmutación de lo que no sirve. Así se curaba nuestra gente cuando no existían hospitales.

Que es un temazcal?....Consiste en calentar con leña piedras volcánicas hasta devolverlas a su estado original, casi líquido, para que sobre ellas se deposite un cocimiento de hierbas medicinales y aromáticas; Esto produce vapor que hace sudar la piel, relajando el cuerpo y desintoxicándolo; limpia las vías respiratorias y tonifica el sistema nervioso.

The Temazcal bath purifies your mind, body, and spirit in an extraordinary garden setting. Ancient ceremonies combine a cleansing sweat bath with herbs and flowers. Music and a soothing massage will renew and energize you. The word Temazcal comes from the Nahuatl language used by the Aztecs: Temaz = bath and Calli = home. The ceremony offered was used by the Aztecs, Zapotecs, Mixtecs, Mayans, and other indigenous groups as a therapeutic and purifying ritual. An adobe building set in an enchantingly beautiful garden holds the Temazcal bath chamber and an area for massage, meditation and rest afterwards. The special bath chamber is centrally heated by rocks. When boughs of herbs are laid over the hot rocks, and the rocks are doused with water, a richly scented steam begins the sweating process necessary to relax and purify the body and to release toxins (spoken of by the indigenous practitioners as excess "hot" and "cold" energies). The bath is attended closely by the temazcalera who assures that the steam is not too hot or cold, and that the proper herbs are used to treat specific complaints. During the ceremony she may gently beat the bather's body with the herbs and brush the steam around the head, encouraging deeper breathing and relaxation. A warm water bath may be given in the chamber, both to quickly cool the body or to encourage greater sweating. You will exit the Temazcal after about 45 minutes, wrapped in a dry cotton sheet. The bather must then relax lying down <b>...</b>

Javier Alvarez' "Temazcal" for maracas and tape is one of the first, if not the first piece in which acoustic (percussion) instruments and electronics are properly combined. I created this 'act' because I wanted to avoid the traditional, sterile way in which "Temazcal" is often performed, and because I wanted to capture the frantic, elusive, and just plain weird character of the piece not only musically, but also visually. This performance took place on May 27th, 2010 at Theater Zuidplein in Rotterdam (The Netherlands).
