USA tent 'cities' on rise as US economy crumbles (23Dec11)

Tent "cities" are springing up and enlarging across the USA as more are forced out of homes by the crooked bankers, as they receive corporate welfare from the government to carry on defrauding taxpayers. Meanwhile politicians like President Obama look on as he gives bankers money. Recorded from Sky News, 23 December 2011.

Southern California Shanty Town / Tent City

Here are some videos of a tent city / shanty town that has popped up in the suburbs of Southern California. I've never seen anything like this in America since the great depression. At first it seems as though many of the residents had lost their houses due to the mortgage crisis, and I am sure some had, but it seems rather that most here have just fell on hard times due to the economy in Souther California in general. The tent city has been removed by the city and no longer exists to my knowledge. We only went there a few times, as our major work is in Los Angeles with the homeless on Skid Row.

While all eyes are on Occupy Wall Street, a different kind of camp is also growing, driven by economic hardship in the United States. Tent City, a makeshift village in the woods of New Jersey, is home to ex-workers who can no longer make ends meet. Their numbers have doubled in the past year. But the neighboring town has had enough of living with a homeless camp in its midst -- and is using the courts to get rid of it. Duration: 02:08

"Papa Bear" talks about life in "Tent City"

For three years, Phil "Papa Bear" DiNardo, 63, has lived in the tent city near Lower Bucks Hospital in Bristol. Before that he rented a room for a year. Before that he lived in his car for seven years. Now he is about to become homeless again. The tent city residents have been told they must leave the property by May 1, when construction vehicles and heavy equipment will begin excavating the land where a warehouse will be build. The property owner has rented a dumpster for the residents to place their belongings. But DiNardo is among the holdouts who don't believe it will happen. "I'm too old," he said Thursday as he sat on the front porch of his tent. "I ain't going to give it up." Video by Calkins Media reporter Jo Ciavaglia

The Poverty Tour - Smiley & West Visits Tent City in Ann Arbor

We tour a tent city off a highway in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This tent city community is one of many across the nation that homeless people form for survival and protection. Smiley & West take to the road on a 15-city nationwide tour to highlight an invisible issue in Washington's halls of power - poverty in America. The Great Recession has left 1 in 7 Americans living in poverty with unemployment in many communities still on the rise. The war on poverty is the greatest policy failure in our society. Smiley & West will share the stories of real Americans, free of punditry and spin, in the hopes of changing government policy in the direction of justice and equality. www.povertytour.smileyandwest.com
"The History of Tent City" ... Part One (of two)

This is Part One of a two-part, image-driven documentary, on the history of Tent City I had the pleasure to orchestrate and narrate in 2006 while working as Executive Director of the Coronado Historical Association and Museum of History & Art. The purpose was to share Coronado history with a much larger audience than what we were reaching through membership activities and the occasional newspaper article. As such, it became invaluable as an educational and entertaining visual at various speaking engagements not only in Coronado, but throughout San Diego County. The very magical Tent City existed south of the Hotel del Coronado from 1900-1939. This documentary is based on a slideshow by Nancy Cobb and Gerry McCartee, two extremely special women who care more about Coronado history than anyone I know, present company excluded perhaps ... Credit is also given to Dave Butler, videographer and editor extraordinaire. We put down the vocal track in the back of his VW bus because it was the only quiet place we could find that day (smile). I put this video on YouTube in response to the many, many questions I continually receive about Tent City. In the interest of history, and especially Coronado history, I hope you enjoy this project that so many of us worked so hard to prepare. It's folksy, but so is history. -Joe Ditler Writer/Historian

SACRAMENTO, CA: THE PEOPLE OF TENT CITY

A LOOK INSIDE TENT CITY: You may have heard about Tent Cities sprawling up across America. Middle class American families, who have lost their jobs and homes are pitching tents. They are the new faces of homelessness in America. Many of them are having a hard time finding a job during this down economy. When I heard the news that a Tent City was rapidly growing in my hometown of Sacramento, just outside of downtown, along the American River, I had to visit and find out more about these families. You may be thinking this isn't an inspiring story, however, I'm sure you'll be surprised after watching this video. I found that, while many tent city dwellers lost most of their material possessions, they haven't lost their sense of self. Many were hopeful, grateful and were full of dreams. Also find out how this story inspired others to take action, click on this video!

Obamaville Tent City: Update

A black kitty, welcomed for his mousing skill, scurries around. The resident, in camouflage pants and knit cap, doesn't want to talk about his life along Monument Creek in Colorado Springs. He does say one thing: "I'm not going to be here long. This is just temporary." His neighbors, Eloy and Seven, hung a Christmas wreath on a tree outside their tent along with a sign that reads "Santa Stop Here." They, too, will be moving on soon, Eloy says. G4T FORUMS g4t-forums.com As the economy worsens the "new homeless" search the streets for food and shelter. They are now being turned away in droves. They continue to wander the streets and stay in vacant lots, behind office buildings, parks and abandon homes. I met a couple who was turned away many times and are in economic shell shock. I helped them as much as I could but there are too many. I spoke with security and this facility has all pedestrian gates broken and locked down...the only way in or out is through the main fence. They monitor indviduals through ID checks. Many homeless are outside the chain link fence waiting to be let in. It is illegal to be homeless in CA unless you are a "chronic homeless person". They fear the police above all else and many have told me they have woken up to a gun at thier head.
