Thousands of demonstrators have marched through a town in the southern United States in support of six black teenagers initially charged with attempted murder in the beating of a white youth. The march on Thursday through Jena, Louisiana, was led by Reverend Al Sharpton, a civil rights campaigner. Teresa Bo reports from Jena.

Kirchner favourite in Argentine poll


Since the Kirchner's came to power in Argentina, the country has enjoyed one of its longest periods of economic growth, that has allowed the government to increase public spending and encourage consumption. The investment has paid off as incumbent leader Christina Kirchner's approval ratings have soared in the last months. They currently stand at around 60 per cent. And pre-election polls, ahead of the country's presidential vote on Sunday, suggest that she could win by a landslide. Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo reports from Buenos Aires.

Argentine football hooligans' growing clout


Argentine hooligans, known as Barras Bravas, have been blamed for many deaths and injuries in a succession of incidents of football-related violence in recent years. At least 14 people have been killed and hundreds of others injured in fights between rival fan groups in just the last year and a half. And with rival gangs at major clubs such as Boca Juniors fighting among themselves for control over activities such as control of the sale of merchandise outside stadiums, ticket sales and even alleged cuts of player transfer fees, authorities are struggling to break the power of the gangs. Haiti's homeless displaced again


Many of Haiti's more than 600000 still displaced by country's devastating 2010 earthquake and forced to live on private property, are now struggling to finding shelter again. A significant number have already been left with nowhere to go after evicted from their meager tents by landowners trying to take back control of their property. Some say authorities, working in support of landlords, forced them out by destroying their tents. The International Organisation for Migration, a rights group, says one in four of those displaced have been threatened with eviction. Teresa Bo reports.

Argentina economists face legal charges


The Argentine government is cracking down on economists who are speaking out about the country's inflation rate, by taking them to court. The government claims they are damaging the country by saying prices are rising as much as 25 per cent per year - one of the highest in the world. The opposition says Cristina Kirchner's government is hiding Argentina's problem and trying to silence those who disagree. Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo reports from Buenos Aires.

Uruguay investigates alleged UN Haiti rape


Uruguay is investigating claims that four members of the Uruguayan contingent of the UN peacekeeping force in Haiti raped an 18-year-old Haitian boy. The country's defence minister said authorities would find out exactly what happened and that there would be tough action if the allegations are proved. However, there is already confusion over the investigations being conducted. A UN probe is said to have found "no intent at sexual assault". Yet the UN has stated that there have been no findings from any preliminary investigations. Opposition members in Uruguay told Al Jazeera that they were told there had been a preliminary report. Poverty in Haiti spawns child slavery 13 October 2008


Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere and the poverty has fuelled restavek, a system of domestic servitude of hundreds of thousands of children that is tantamount to modern-day slavery. The country's government acknowledges that child slaves exist but says it is part of the culture. Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo reports.

Argentina pupils rally over neglect


Students in Argentina have been protesting over the quality of the country's public education system. They say the government is neglecting its schools and universities, which were once viewed as some of the best in Latin America. The protests come on the anniversary of the kidnapping and assassination of secondary school students during the military rule in the 1970s. Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo reports from Buenos Aires.

The "poor's plague" in Latin America - 26 Dec 08


Thousands of Latin Americans die each year from the disease of the poor... "mal de chagas". Mal de chagas is carried by small insects that live in mud houses. Many poor people say that since the disease affects them the most, governments do not spend the resources needed to combat the epidemic. Teresa Bo reports.
