Building a Tesla Coil

Video showing the construction of a typical spark-gap type Tesla Coil. There was a lot of information and I couldn't cover everything in this video. So there will be more in a part 2. But this gives some basic info for building a Tesla Coil.

Tesla Coils - Arc Attack - Doctor Who Theme Song - Makers Faire 2010 - San Mateo - No. 1

www.youtube.com ArcAttack auditioned for America's Got Talent. ArcAttack employs a unique DJ set up of their own creation to generate an 'electrifying' audio visual performance. The HVDJ pumps music through a PA system while two specially designed DRSSTC's (Dual-Resonant Solid State Tesla Coils) act as separate synchronized instruments. These high tech machines produce an electrical arc similar to a continuous lightning bolt and put out a crisply distorted square wave sound reminiscent of the early days of synthesizers. i filmed this video @ makers faire san mateo expo center.... web site: www.arcattack.com ArcAttackmusic youtube channel www.youtube.com For what it's worth: I happened to aquire a free ticket to the Makers Faire in San Mateo California on May 22 2010 (first time i ever went) as i was walking to the inside building Arkattack started their show looked interesting so i walked over and began filming using my Sony "G" HD video camera and realized as i was filming that the music sounded familiar thinking nothing of it. Then after uploading the raw video onto youtube and finally the first ten post came in on this video one of which the user stated that this is the Doctor Who Theme Song lol then i finally realized whoa i remember watching the Doctor Who show years ago. I had no idea that the video i filmed of ArcAttack's performance would get so many views in such a short time. Then later on it dawned on me whoa i actually unkowingly became a maker at the Makers ...

Twin Solid State Musical Tesla coils playing Mario Bros theme song at the 2007 Lightning on the Lawn Teslathon sponsored by DC Cox (Resonance Research Corp) in Baraboo WI. The music that you hear is coming from the sparks that these two identical high power solid state Tesla coils are generating. There are no speakers involved. The Tesla coils stand 7 feet tall and are each capable of putting out over 12 foot of spark. They are spaced about 18 feet apart. The coils are controlled over a fiber optic link by a single laptop computer. Each coil is assigned to a midi channel which it responds to by playing notes that are programed into the computer software. These coils were constructed by Steve Ward and Jeff Larson. Video was captured by Terry Blake. What is not obvious is how loud the coils are. They are well over 110dB If you look at another You Tube video which is from a different angle, you can hear the echo off the building and get a better idea of how loud it is. www.youtube.com
"Sweet Home Alabama" - Musical Tesla Coils

These are two gigantic solid state musical Tesla Coils. A Tesla Coil is a special type of transformer invented by Nikola Tesla that is able to generating extremely large voltages using a phenomenon known as electrical resonance. Each coil in this video is capable of generating a 13 foot spark. This equates to about 500000 volts of electricity. The primary drive system for the coils consists of high power semiconductors arranged into an H-Bridge switching configuration. During a spark event, the coil is pulsed on for a few hundred millionths of a second. During this short time, thousands of amps circulate within the primary tank circuit and the energy is coupled into the secondary resonator through magnetism. So what appears to be a continuous burst of sparks is actually a specific number of sparks generated per second. By modulating the number of sparks that emit from the coil each second, different tones can be produced by the coils. These coils were constructed by Eric Goodchild and Steven Caton. Eric Goodchild is currently an EE student at ASU Polytechnic. Giant Tesla Coils in Russia!!! Marx Generators for testing insulators

Visit the AlienScientist forums to discuss this topic in more detail: www.alienscientist.com One of my viewers sent me these pictures from Russia +55° 55' 26.15", +36° 49' 10.97" These are High-Voltage Pulse Generators (marx generators) that belong to the All-Russian ElectroTechnical Institute's "high-voltage scientific research center" en.wikipedia.org A bit different than Tesla Coils, but based on the same principal only built up in series to achieve much higher voltages. Generators this large certainly produce enough power to effect local weather and possibly enough to electrically charge the upper atmosphere, similar to harp except that haarp can pin-point locations using specific ELF frequencies unlike these Tesla coils which produce incredibly high (electro-static) voltages. The purpose and outcomes of this, rather odd science projekt, is still not quite clear. (k added for emphasis) One possible explanation is that they are used to study the behavior of equipment under powerful electromagnetic radiation comparable to that of a nuclear explosion. Another theory is that the All-Russian ElectroTechnical Institute's "high-voltage scientific research center" is creating their own version of HAARP High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program. www.haarp.alaska.edu www.haarp.net For more pictures visit www.darkroastedblend.com Please rate, and leave a comment with any information you may have. Musical Tesla Coil Singing Mario Under Ground and Others

This clip is from the 2007 Duckon Sci Fi convention in Naperville IL, USA. The show consisted of 2 Tesla coils making lightning for patrons to enjoy. The musical Tesla Coil turned out to be a big hit. The coil in this clip is a solid state musical Tesla coil constructed by Steve Ward. The Tesla coil stands 7 feet tall and is capable of putting out over 12 foot of spark. The sound pressure level is well over 110dB. The coil is powered by 240 volts and can draw over 40 amps. The coil resonates at a frequency in the 45 KHz range, and is modulated by a microprocessor sending out trigger pulses over a fiber optic link. The fiber optics are used to provide electrical isolation for the control electronics. The high voltage sparks are making the notes that you hear. Every note of the music is a burst of sparks at the note's frequency. Here is a video of the coil from a different angle from a earlier run of the coil. www.youtube.com Video captured by Terry Blake edited by Jeff Larson.

Tesla Coil Concert!! University of Illnois..

www.marksmart.net http Mark Smart performs live in Urbana, Illinois on March 7, 2008. This outdoor concert was part of a student-run open house for the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois. Tesla coils were used to create musical pitches via a control system designed by university student Steve Ward. Two coils were used. The right coil is playing a prerecorded Midi track, acting as the bass, and the left one is performed live as a lead sound via the Continuum fingerboard. The Midi track as well as additional audio backing tracks were played via Cubase running on a Open Labs Neko workstation. In spite of the frigid temperatures (4 degrees Fahrenheit, 26 mph winds), the concert was well attended and was voted the most popular event of the open house.
