Not only does it promote loose lips and relaxation and give you something to do with your hands, there is just something about beer that says "we come in peace and to chill." It also has a tendency to draw out some good drunk stories with little to no prompting. Anyways, it turns out that the Walkmen don't like to drink beer at 1 in the afternoon, so we brought them cookies and cupcakes instead. I thought maybe we could get some cutesy tales out of them about their costumes for the cover of the remake of that Nillson album they recorded, or accounts from their weddings, you know, pastry-inspired stories. Instead, they told me about the time Ham was arrested at SXSW and how when their recording studio was shut down they barricaded themselves in with a 600-pound piece of wood. So what we learned is that when it comes to stories, alcohol is alcohol, fermented or not.

Gothamist House Presents: The Walkmen at the NYPL By Jen Carlson on Aug 23, 2010 As previously mentioned, we're taking our Gothamist House series on the road, or rather, into some of our favorite New York City locations. First stop: the New York Public Library's Schwarzman Building on 5th Avenue (once home to the old Croton Reservoir). We brought The Walkmen over there earlier this month to film them performing a couple of songs in the midst of the marbled halls of the iconic building. The Walkmen live in Leeds, England....my favourite song from the gig.....they were fantastic. I heard 'the rat' on the radio and it took me another week to find out who it was. I found out they were in England gigging so I turned up with my camera did an interview and got some concert footage ...thanks Walkmen

From the songs we saw the band play last night and the audio streams that have hit the net, it's clear that they've put together another magical set of songs. Sticking with the openness that defined the arrangements of You and Me, the bass interplay remains perfectly balanced while ace kit man Matt Barrick's signature potent snap continues to impress. And then there's Hamilton's gorgeously full voice - jagged and razor tight enunciations contrast beautifully with his pristine rounded bellow - the perfect narration for this set of songs said to be inspired by time spent in the Portuguese capital.
