Taken By Storm: SXSW 2011 Accepted Film

As images get recoded into zeros and ones and the world disappears into digital folders, for over forty years using record cover albums as his canvas, Storm Thorgerson has produced some of the most visually arresting images in popular culture - eschewing computer manipulation in his quest to "do it for real". With intimate interviews and footage of Thorgerson and never seen before material, TAKEN BY STORM: THE ART OF STORM THORGERSON AND HIPGNOSIS, is a film about one man's creative journey in pursuit of his artistic vision at the intersection of art, commerce, and technological change.

Le mitiche copertine dei Pink Floyd in mostra e l'autore, Storm Thorgerson, disegna per C6tv

Milano.

This piece of work was a site based Artistic project. The brief was to physically manipulate an actual site in order to reflect the personality of an artist, in this case Storm Thorgerson. We have used references from Thorgerson's work including themes by Hipgnosis. Any similarities between this film and actual work produced by the artist are entirely coincidental.

For the Love of Vinyl: Aubrey "Po" Powell on Hipgnosis

Film by and with thanks to Nate Pommer. Aubrey Powell his new book: For the Love of Vinyl: The Album Art of Hipgnosis. Hipgnosis was the biggest and best design firm for the biggest and best bands of the classic rock era. Formed by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell in 1968, Hipgnosis was a graphic design studio specializing in creative photography and working mainly in the music business designing album covers for many rock n roll bands including Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, 10cc, Yes, Peter Gabriel, Black Sabbath, Paul McCartney, Syd Barrett and Styx, among others. For a dozen years Hipgnosis created timeless rock iconography. For the Love of Vinyl is the first book to document their output in detail, focusing on over 60 package designs from cover to label written about in entertaining detail by the men who created them. Also included are short essays by musicians (such as Pink Floyds Nick Mason), artists (Peter Blake) and fellow designers (Paula Scher) on their favorite covers, as well as unseen photographs and ephemera. Complementing it all is a lengthy critical and historical text examining Hipgnosis and its legacy.

The Pineapple Thief - Someone Here is Missing (album montage)

The new album from The Pineapple Thief. Artwork by Storm Thorgerson (Pink Floyd, MUSE, Biffy Clyro). A decade after they began and The Pineapple Thief are set to become your favourite new band. Someone Here is Missing is: A record of dark edges, full of love and regret, my life in the last eighteen months pretty much, according to singer/songwriter Bruce Soord. It also happens to be their best yet. With 2008s acclaimed Tightly Unwound album which launched the renowned Kscope label the band suddenly found themselves celebrated at both home and abroad. Everything was suddenly in place for us to move on to the next level as a band, says Soord, We just had to make a great record, no pressure then Its the album that Soords most proud of and so he should be. Storm Thorgerson (Pink Floyd, Muse, Biffy Clyro) is already a fan. So much so that he created the album cover. A happy accident mean that Kscopes designer met Storm at an exhibition and asked if hed work with a band with big ideas but who had yet to make their mark on the world. If, conceded the artist, I like their music. He sat us down and asked exactly what the songs were about, says Soord about Storm, Then he gave us six sketch ideas, but the one we wanted couldnt be done as it meant digging a huge hole in a field, but no farmer would let us do it, but I prefer this one, even though Storms against putting bands on the cover he even let me be on it. Not that youll recognise me. With festivals and a full tour planned for ...
