Film Impressions: The Lost Thumris of PAKEEZAH (1972)

Kamal Amrohi's Pakeezah represents one of Indian cinema's shimmering musical milestones. It was the composer Ghulam Mohamed's final score. Playback queen Lata Mangeshkar was the voice of the courtesan Sahib Jaan, played by tragedienne Meena Kumari, who incidentally passed away shortly after the film's release, resulting in scores of film-goers flocking to cinema theatres as if to pay obeisance at her mazaar, according to the late actress, Nadira. Naushad has provided this film with a background score that is much less feted but includes some exquisite thumri numbers and ghazals by singers like Rajkumari, Vani Jairam, Begum Parveen Sultana and Naseem Bano Chopra. In some scenes, like when Sahib Jaan visits her childhood friend Bibban (Vijay Laxmi), Kamal Amrohi weaves in some brilliant thumri melodies as some kind of intricate ambient sound... some of which can be heard in the video below. Have a look, and listen hard. There are many riffs that seem to waft in from the neighboring kothas, and maybe a more enterprising viewer can help us identify every lost melody. Kate Na Biraha Ki Raat - Thumri - Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty

Thumri in Raag Mishra Pilu by Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty. Ajoy Chakrabarty was born in Bengal to Ajit Chakrabarty in a Hindu Brahmin family. They moved to India from his homeland, Bangladesh during the partition and raised his two sons in Shyamnagar. His younger brother, Sanjay Chakrabarty is a noted composer and music therapist. His daughter, Kaushiki Chakrabarty is also an upcoming talent of Hindusthani classical music. Chakrabarty was a disciple of Ustad Munawar Ali Khan. He is also a first class graduate from the Rabindra Bharati University. Chakrabarty showed extraordinary promise in vocal music and at the tender age of three, began taking lessons from his father Ajit Chakrabarty. He then learnt from Pannalal Samanta and Kanai Das Bairagi and later became a student of Padma Bhushan Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh. In 1969, his training took a decisive turn as he became a disciple of Ustad Munawar Ali Khan, son of the legendary maestro of the Patiala-Kasur gharana (school), Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. He is notable for imagination and sensitivity to lyrics, coupled with his uncanny sense of rhythm.

Thumri Khamaj ~ Live ~ -by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali KhanSaheb

www.facebook.com Today (April 25) is the 43rd death anniversary of Legendary Ustad Barre Gulam Ali KhanSaheb. ---------- =Live Concerts= The experience of attending a live concert of Indian classical music cannot be compared with any other musical experience. The accolades, the loud Wah Wahs, shouts of Kya Baat Hai may alarm a westerner who is attending an Indian concert for the first time. What lack of etiquette and shameful behavior of the audience, he may think. The travel to India guide book was true after all. Indians are really a noisy and uneducated bunch of natives. Disturbing or interrupting an artist's live performance (of classical nature) may not seem to be a proper thing to a western eye. But classical music of India thrives on such 'noise'. No Wah Wahs, no Kya Baat Hai, and the concert may be safely termed as a flop show. This is especially true if the performer is a vocalist. Enjoy the live concerts posted above of a Great Peerless Maestro. "NO WORDS CAN DESCRIBE THE BEAUTY OF THIS HEAVENLY THUMRI.THE PUNJAB STYLE TABLA IS NO LESS A "QIAMAT" (MOST PROBABLY USTAD INAYATI KHAN D/O MIAN QADIR BAKSH PAKHAWAJI) HERE ONE CAN SEE WHAT BGAK WAS CAPABLE OF.SIZZLING HOT TRACK....DEDICATED TO DR.KASHYAP DAVE." Pt.BHimsen Joshi - Thumri - jadu bhareli kaun albeli naar - Recording 1

Bharat Ratna Pandit BHIMSEN JOSHI. Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi (Kannada : ಪಂಡಿತ ಭೀಮಸೇನ ಗುರುರಾಜ ಜೋಷಿ. Marathi: पंडित भीमसेन जोशी is one of the most popular and respected names in contemporary music. Familiar even to the musically illiterate, Bhimsen Joshi is noted for his extraordinarily rich and sonorous voice and has been ruling the musical world for over four decades. Bhimsen is a versatile singer; he is an expert in khayal singing but he is also adept in the presentation of thumris, songs from plays, or devotional compositions. His lilting thumris (Jadu bhareli, Piya ke milan ki aas or Babul mora) and his innumerable popular Abhangs composed by the saints of Maharashtra are instances in point. He was born in 1922 into a Brahmin family in Gadag, Karnataka. At the age of 11, against his father wishes, Bhimsen Joshi ran away from home to learn music. A few years of his youth were thus spent in the company of well known musicians at Gwalior, Lucknow and Rampur, serving them and learning as much as he could from them. However, soon realising that Bhimsen was extremely talented, his father arranged for the child to be taught music under the guidance of Rambhau Kundgolkar, popularly known as Sawai Gandharva, a pupil of Abdul Karim Khan. Thus began Bhimsen's succesful journey in the world of music. He made his debut in 1946, singing at his guru's birthday. SwarBhaskar VishawaRatna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. ( 4th Feb 1922 - 24th Jan 2011 ) It was an awe-inspiring fusion of intelligence and passion that perhaps separated Panditji from other classical vocalists who dogmatically stuck to their ''Gharana'' culture with a rigidity that possibly inhibited creativity. Born on February 4, 1922 at Gadag in Dharwad district of Karnataka, his journey to the stardom in the world of Hindustani music was just as dramatic as it was arduous for one who decided to run away from home at a tender age of 11, in quest of finding a ''Guru'' to learn music.

Khayal and Thumri by Sandhya Mukherjee

Sandhya started her music training under the direction of Pandit Santosh Kumar Basu, Professor AT Kannan and Professor Chinmoy Lahiri. However, her guru was Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan under whom she mastered Indian classical music. Though classically trained, the bulk of her work consists of Bengali modern songs. She began her career in Mumbai singing Hindi songs, starting with a song in the film Anjan Garh at the age of 17. Following her marriage to the Bengali poet Shyamal Gupta she settled in her home city of Kolkata. Gupta went on to write the lyrics for many of her songs. Her best known collaboration is arguably with the Bengali singer Hemanta Mukherjee with whom she sang numerous duets, primarily as playback for Bengali films produced from Kolkata. Hemanta and Sandhya became known as the voices behind the pairings of the Bengali superstar Uttam Kumar and his numerous heroines, most notably being the actress Suchitra Sen, whose singing voice she became. Besides Hemanta Mukherjee's compositions, her largest body of work is with Robin Chattopadhyay and Nachiketa Ghosh. She has also sung notable songs under Salil Chowdhury and Sudhin Dasgupta's baton. During the Bangladesh Liberation War she joined the mass movement among Indian Bengali artistes to raise money for the millions of refugees who had poured into Kolkata and West Bengal to escape the fighting, and to raise global awareness for the cause of Bangladesh. Thumari By Gauhar Jaan Recordrd in 1905...

I have been getting many warnings from the youtube, please visit my other site HameshaJawanGeet if my this account is suspended. Thanks. Gauhar Jaan (1873 -1930) was an Indian singer and dancer from Calcutta. She was one of the first performers to record music on 78 rpm records in India. Gauhar Jaan was born as Angelina Yeoward in 1873 in Patna, to William Robert Yeoward, an Armenian Jew working as an engineer in dry ice factory at Azamgarh, near Banaras, who married a Jewish Armenian lady, Allen Victoria Hemming around 1870. Victoria was born and brought up in India, and trained in music and dance. Within a few years in 1879, the marriage ended, causing hardships to both mother and daughter, who later migrated to Banaras in 1881, with a Muslim nobleman, 'Khursheed', who appreciated Victoria's music more than her husband. Later, Victoria, converted to Islam and changed Angelina's name to 'Gauhar Jaan' and hers to 'Malka Jaan' A major milestone in the history of Indian music occurred in 1902. It was in this year that Gauhar Jan was asked by the "Gramophone Company" to record a series of songs for them. This corpus of recordings became a cornerstone for their business for many years. She was paid 3000 rupees per recording, which was considered a lot of money in those days. As it turned out, the historical value of these recordings would be priceless. From 1902 to 1920 she recorded over 600 songs in more than 10 languages. She became India' s first "recording star", who ...
