Minesto Tidal Energy
Minesto develops a new concept for tidal power plants called Deep Green. Deep Green is based on a fundamentally new principle for electricity generation from tidal currents. The power plant is applicable in areas where no other known technology can operate cost effectively due to its unique ability to operate in low velocities. Minesto expands the total marine energy potential and offers a step change in cost for tidal energy. The principle of the technology can be explained as a two stage process. The first stage increases the relative flow speed entering a turbine. When the tide hits the wing it creates a lift force, since the kite is mounted to the ocean bed with a tether and is controlled by a rudder, the kite can be taken in the desired trajectory, here in an eight formed path. The method increases the flow velocity into the turbine by 10 times, compared to the actual stream velocity. The second stage uses a generator to convert kinetic energy into electrical power. The net result is increased power from a smaller package. The planned normal full size weighs only 7 tons excluding anchoring which gives an energetic payback time of 3 weeks, compared to 8 months for onshore wind. The test confirms power production of the plant at Marin in Holland.

Seashore Life: Tide Pools at Leo Carillio State Park 720p HD
Enjoy a short trip to the California coast's Leo Carillo State Park, without getting your feet wet! Twice a day the tide moves out, exposing the rocks, plants and sea life that inhabit this shallow rocky beach. Among the wildlife you can see are Starfish, Sea Anemones, crabs, clams/muscles and seaweed in various colors. The fish are tiny and scarce, but if you're lucky you might run across a small Octopus or Sea Slug in the shallow, isolated pools. The above-water footage was shot with a Canon HF100 HD camcorder, and a DXG 5B1V HD water-proof camera was used for the underwater views. Top professional big wave surfers head to the Qiantang River in Hangzhou, China to surf the world's largest tidal bore--known as the "Silver Dragon." Greg Long, Rusty Long, and Mark Healey wow the masses at the annual Tidal Bore Wave Watching Festival in Hangzhou and make surfing history! Gerard Sports Marketing (GSM) has teamed up with Chinese partner, Wabsono International--and the Chinese government--to bring the sport of surfing to the Chinese people. Everyday--twice a day--in the City of Hangzhou (pronounced "han-joe"), a tidal bore wave rolls upstream on the Qiantang (pronounced "kwin-tang") River. And each year, in September, the wave is at its largest. To witness this awesome sight, hundreds of thousands of Chinese people come to the annual Wave Watching Festival in Hangzhou. And this year, they're here to see surfing for the very first time. For this trip, we brought the Long brothers, and Mark Healey. The purpose of this trip was to demonstrate to the Chinese government that surfing on the river was feasible... and that the idea of broadening the annual festival to include surfing is a good one. This year's surfing event was a huge success. In fact, the day of the festival, it was a top story on the Chinese national news channel (CCTV)--and was viewed by approximately 1/2 the entire Chinese population! The extraordinary surging tide of the Qiantang River is a world-renowned natural wonder caused by the gravitation of the celestial body, the centrifugal force produced by the rotation of the earth and by the peculiar bottleneck shape of the Hangzhou Bay. Huge tides occur between the first and fifth day and between the Isth and Igth day of each lunar month. When the bores surge into the river with the momentum of an avalanche, it creates a magnificent and breath-taking scene. At one time, the difference of the tidal wave reached g meters high. On August I8 of the lunar calendar year, the traditional tide-watching day, people throng to the Qiantang River to watch the wonder. Watching the bores at the Qiantang River has a history of over 2000 years. At Yanguan Town, the watching site, people can also get a glimpse into the traditional Chinese culture by visiting many historical structures such as the Sea-Pacifying Pagoda, the Temple of the Ocean God, Zhongshan Pavilion and the residences of Chen Yuanlong, a famous Qing Dynasty prime minister and Wang Guowei, a noted scholar of the Qing Dynasty.
