The Lost Libraries of Timbuktu Part 1

Aminatta Forna tells the story of legendary Timbuktu and its long hidden legacy of hundreds of thousands of ancient manuscripts. With its university founded around the same time as Oxford, Timbuktu is proof that the reading and writing of books have long been as important to Africans as to Europeans.

Dr.HAKIM QUICK----JOURNEY TO TIMBUKTU----

Imagine a city in 16th century West Africa where thousands of Black African students pondered over the latest ideas in science, mathematics, and medicine. A fabled town in the middle of the scorching desert, overflowing with countless numbers of valuable books, expensive crafts, exquisite fabrics, and unrivalled gold jewellery! Imagine a community of highly cultured, wealthy people whose forbidden streets were the subject of legends and whose ochre walls were sought after by some of the greatest adventurers of the times. From its grand mud structures which have stood the test of time and still fulfil their role as centres of prayer and learning, to the collections of scrolls and writings hidden in chests buried under the desert sands, Timbuktu is a treasure of African intellectual and spiritual History. The story begins with a Tuareg woman named Buktu who founded a settlement in the 11th century, some 12 kilometres (eight miles) north of the Niger River flood-plain along the southern edge of the Sahara. It was a perfect resting place for the nomadic Tuareg who roamed the desert in the rainy season and were in need of a malaria-free base for their animals to graze during the scorching heat of the summer. Buktu's camp had fresh water wells, and she would protect their heavy goods when they left the camp at the first rains. This small, seemingly insignificant campsite, known as "Tim-Buktu" or the well of Buktu became the cornerstone of a thriving, bustling city. To an ...

Treasures Of Timbuktu - Mali

December 2008 Deep in the heart of Africa lies the fabled city of Timbuktu. Last year thousands of ancient manuscripts were unearthed here. But these priceless books are deteriorating due to lack of support from the West. Timbuktu was once the largest and most powerful empire in Africa, celebrated across the world for its wealth, culture and art. We have known the art of writing since the 11th century, says African historian Salem Ould Elhadsj. We started writing before most European countries. For Westerners however, Timbuktu is a semi-fictional land located in the back of beyond. Tackling Western ignorance is no simple task. The manuscripts prove we are a most important city, says Salem, but the rest of the world does not even know where we are. Will the West wake up to one of Africas greatest treasures in time? 37. Timbuktu • Mali

Wehave selected 100 unique places on Earth that are projected to undergo profound changes within the next few generations. We based our selection of the 100 places on the 4th Assessment Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Simply by drawing attention to the beauty of these places, 100 Places to Remember Before they Disappear creates an argument to preserve them. The 100 Places we have chosen to highlight, and the people who live in them, are in serious danger because of rising sea levels, rising temperatures and extreme weather events triggered by climate change. Among ambassadors are Joss Stone, Desmund Tutu for more info visit www.100places.com. A Place as Real as its Mud is Hard To many Westerners, Timbuktu is shrouded in mystery, existing more in the mind than on the map. Phrases like from here to Timbuktu paint it as a remote, exotic place at the edge of the world. In fact, the city of Timbuktu is very real. Bordering the Sahara Desert in the West African nation of Mali, it was once an economic and cultural hub, enjoying a privileged position in the middle of the trans-Saharan trade routes. The great Djingareyber, Sankoré and Sidi Yahia mosques, built during Timbuktus golden age from the 14th to the 16th centuries, still stand today and all three are on UNESCOs World Heritage List. Together, the three mosques once composed the famous University of Timbuktu, which made the city a centre of wisdom, attracting learned men from throughout the ...

Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba in Timbuktu

Bassekou Kouyate and his band Ngoni Ba made one of the best received African albums of 2009. "I Speak Fula", released in September followed the hugely successful 2007 Segu Blue album. Through his music, Bassekou and his band have breathed new life into Ngoni playing. The traditional string instrument made of wood or calabash with animal skin stretched across it was always played sitting down on stage. Bassekou and his band changed that, strapping the Ngonis over their shoulders like guitars and bringing the instruments to the front of the stage. Bassekou and Ngoni Ba headlined on Friday night at the Festival of the Desert. We made contact with him on Saturday and he invited us to come to where he and his band were staying in Timbuktu to film an unplugged performance in the more traditional style. Again, we found ourselves racing the setting sun, trying to get the performance recorded before the light failed us. We borrowed his neighbour's rooftop and Bassekou Kouyate, his wife Amy Sacko, Calabash player Alou Coulibaly and Ngoni bassplayer Moussa Bah performed this beautiful version of "Jonkoloni" from the album Segu Blue.

Timbuktu heritage 'under threat'

UNESCO has voiced alarm over the safety of Timbuktu's cultural heritage, following reports that rebels have over-run and looted centres containing thousands of ancient books and documents that bear testimony to the city's extraordinary history. In 1990, the UN put the legendary Malian city on the list of World Heritage sites in danger but the two main threats facing it were desertification and human neglect. This situation has now been compounded by insecurity, vandalism and the prospect of war. Al Jazeera's Mohamed Val reports from Timbuktu.

"Never has the story of the origins and history--the decline and fall and resurrection--of this black center of learning and intellect been told in more compelling fashion than in this marvelous documentary. I am assigning it to both my undergraduate and graduate courses at Harvard, and hope that all scholars of African and African American Studies will do the same. Truth be told, all students in high school and college throughout the world should be required to see this film, and learn of the history of our intellectual forebears whose very existence Europe and the West have, until recently, systematically denied. ShortWaveMusic (www.myke.me) 2012: Timbuktu [HD VERSION]

The official project documentary reel for SHORTWAVEMUSIC 2012: TIMBUKTU, recorded on location throughout the Republic of Mali from 31 December 2011 - 17 January 2012. Funded by Kickstarter and independent contributions. www.kickstarter.com ShortWaveMusic is a global sound project dedicated to preserving the world's musical traditions and folklore as heard on local, regional, and international radio. I started the project in 2005 from a basement in Cambridge, MA, and it has since grown into an annual expedition to various far-flung parts of the globe. Previous installments of ShortWaveMusic have been recorded in Ibiza, Bulgaria, and the United Arab Emirates. 2012 is the first in a new ten-year project chronicling the vast radio landscape of the African continent, beginning with Mali. Recordings are made "on location" and then serialized over the course of 8-10 months at my Web site. My long-term goal is to tell the story of international broadcasting in the 21st century by capturing the extraordinary and varied ways in which people continue to communicate by radio, despite the advent of newer technologies. JUNIOR NATURAL Freestyle with TIMBUKTU, LOOPTROOP, HENOK...

- THE PRINCE OF REGGAE - Only 10 years old, Junior Natural makes his debut on the big stage of the largest reggae festival in Scandinavia. He plays the drums. Shortly after he changes the drumsticks for the microphone. Little Junior is born with a Natural talent for music. At 12, his first single « Number 1 Girl » is released. Mastered by Bob Marley's former Jamaican label Tuff Gong, he dedicates the love song for his mother. "I thought of her all the time when I was recording. She was very happy when I gave it to her as a Christmas gift." His father Daddy Natural has a history as musician and wrote the song. The development of Junior Natural's international carrier starts when BorderBlaster detected him for the compilation « Scandinavian Hip Hop Invasion » Junior Natural's performance at the legendary stage Elysée Montmartre in Paris in the beginning of 2008 makes a great impression on the French public. His freestyle performance at the radio station Génération 88.2 later confirmed the artist's incredible talent and established his name as The Upcoming Young Reggae Artist. When Junior Natural returnes to France a few months later to perform at Garance Reggae Festival, Jamaican artist Shaggy is so impressed with his talent that he invites Junior Natural on stage to sing together with him. Later on he records the song "One in a Million" produced by Shaggy's manager, producer and partner Robert Livingstone. In August 2008, Junior Natural will share the stage with reggae ...
