It is no coincidence that the annual sojourn to Trinidad and Tobago for most visitors and returning nationals is due to the allure of the Carnival. Those involved in the arts come to refresh their ideas, others come to temporarily escape the daily work routine and some, like me, mix both with having a great time just liming with the people. This year we decided to mingle with the bands, the players and their friends on the road. The stage is the show for the spectators. On the road the players indulge in their own personal party experience. Thank you to those who let me gatecrash! Trinidad and Tobago Carnival 2012 - Monday (Liming in Sando)
We return to the shores of Trinidad and Tobago for Carnival 2012 to top up on fun, rum and sun. Challenged to visit and film in San Fernando (affectionately known by locals as 'Sando') we headed south on Carnival Monday to witness the action in TnT's reserve capital. San Fernando has a very rich history in carnival. During the 1870s-90s various attempts were made by the British colonial authorities to ban the Carnboulay festivities. Whilst the capital, Port of Spain, was the center of the authority's attentions for such control, San Fernando citizens also rebelled against attempts to stop Carnival. A proclamation to ban the events by the Attorney General in 1881 resulted in "disturbances in Couva, Princess Town and San Fernando". What we witness here in 2012 confirms that the people of the South continue their legacy of being passionate about the festival! Thank you to the mas bands Southern Mas Assoc., Kallicharan, Warriors, etc., for making our day a great one. Music rights: Precision Productions based in Palmiste, San Fernando. Their riddims dominated the sound of carnival 2012. Our mix features Machel Montano and Benjai on the "3 Zero" riddim with "Bottle of Rum" and "People's Champion" respectively. Next time you fly to Tobago from Trinidad, sit on the right hand side of the plane. A few minutes after take off you will see the devastated Valencia Forest Reserve, which is one big strip mine. Some of the quarries you'll see are legal, some are not. In 2007 the government removed quarries of 150 acres or less as a designated activity for which, under the EMA Act, a CEC is necessary. A CEC is a Certificate of Environmental Clearance. In layman's terms, this means that quarries of less than 150 acres were deregulated. 95% of quarries in T&T are less than 150 acres in size. Despite making it an election promise, the present government has failed to reverse that decision, as per January 2012.
