Thomas Tomkins - Sad Pavan for these distracted times' -- In memory of Gustav Leonhardt Harpsichord

In memory of Gustav Leonhardt + 1928 - 2012 Tomkins was born in St David's in Pembrokeshire in 1572. His father, also Thomas, who had moved there in 1565 from the family home of Lostwithiel in Cornwall, was a vicar choral of St David's Cathedral and organist there. Three of Thomas junior's half-brothers, John, Giles and Robert, also became eminent musicians, but none quite attained the fame of Thomas. By 1594, but possibly as early as 1586, Thomas and his family had moved to Gloucester, where his father was employed as a minor canon at the cathedral. Thomas almost certainly studied under William Byrd for a time, for one of his songs bears the inscription: To my ancient, and much reverenced Master, William Byrd, and it may have been at this period of his career, since Byrd leased property at Longney, near Gloucester. Although documentary proof is lacking, it is also possible that Byrd was instrumental in finding young Thomas a place as chorister in the Chapel Royal. In any case, all former Chapel Royal choristers were required to be found a place at university, and Tomkins was affiliated to Magdalena College, Oxford in 1607. Already in 1596 he had been appointed organist and master of the choristers at Worcester Cathedral. The next year he married Alice Patrick, a widow nine years his senior, whose husband Nathaniel, who died in 1595, had been Tomkins' predecessor at Worcester. Thomas's only son, Nathaniel, was born in Worcester in 1599, where he was to spend the rest of <b>...</b>

SLTV Sam Tomkins to stay with Warriors

England full-back Sam Tomkins has committed his future to Wigan Warriors and rugby league by signing a new five-year contract. Twenty-two-year-old Tomkins, one of the hottest talents in Engage Super League, will now remain at the DW Stadium until the end of 2016, with a cast-iron commitment to see out a minimum of three years. Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan has revealed the club have taken advantage of amendments to the league's salary cap to help keep Tomkins in the game. The Rugby Football League are sticking with a £1.7million ceiling but clubs are to be given permission to make allowances for long-serving, marquee and home-grown players in an effort to prevent a drain of talent to Australia and the 15-man code. It means Tomkins will definitely be available for selection as a member of England's 2013 World Cup team. "Sam enjoys rugby league and he wants to be paid at the level he ought to be paid for a player of his calibre," Lenagan explained. "He becomes far and away the highest paid player in rugby league. His package puts him alongside and in front of many other quite famous rugby union players, whether they are ex-Wigan or wherever they are. "He is entitled to be paid what he is worth. He is in my opinion going to be the best player on the planet, rugby union or rugby league. "There is no question of Sam going anywhere for the next three years at least but eventually, rather like Jason Robinson, when he has won everything three times over, there is always the <b>...</b>

SLTV: Tomkins try lights up friendly

England full-back Sam Tomkins once again stole the show as Wigan edged out Salford in a tight affair at Salford City Stadium. Tomkins made an early try for Pat Richards and went over himself for the highlight of the 16-10 victory. Wigan boss Shaun Wane was delighted with his number 1's display but warned the Warriors must not become reliant on last season's top try scorer.

Thomas Tomkins / Denis Stevens, 1960: Thou Art My King, O God - Musica Deo Sacra

From the LP shown above, issued on the MHS label in 1960. Thomas Tomkins (1572 -- 9 June 1656) was an English composer of the late Tudor and early Stuart period. In addition to being one of the prominent members of the English madrigal school, he was a skilled composer of keyboard and consort music, and the last member of the English virginalist school.

Sturridge, Tomkins and Wickham reflect on England's 4-0 victory over Denmark

Manchester City defender Micah Richards was stretchered off with a hamstring problem as England's Under-21 side beat Denmark 4-0 in a friendly on Thursday. Richards collapsed clutching his left thigh early on but England went on to end a run of three games without a win. Technically sound Denmark shone after that but a fine long-range strike from Danny Welbeck put the visitors ahead. Stuart Pearce's side added goals after the break through Scott Sinclair, Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson. Pearce, who has been offered a new two-year contract to remain as coach when his current deal expires after this summer's European Championships in Denmark, will be pleased that his stuttering young team rediscovered their ruthless streak in Viborg. England pounced on a number of defensive mistakes made by the Danes, who failed to punish a string of England errors, although Nicolai Jorgensen had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside.

My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up my love, my fair one, and come away. For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land. The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vine with her tender grapes give a sweet smell. Arise my love, my fair one, and come away. Song of Solomon 2: 10-13. Sean Smyth's Set - Saskia Tomkins - fiddle

Saskia Tomkins is a member of the Celtic group "Cairdeas (Canada)". Here, at the St. Pat's Fancy fund raising concert, she plays three tunes. According to the group's CD tracks listing, Seán Smyth's Set consists of Jim Mckillop's (aka Maeve's Reel), Gerry Cronin's Or Forget Me Not, and Denis Langtou's (Aka Grant Lamb's Reel). I'm not sure if these tunes are identical. Unfortunately, son Oisin's drum playing was not picking up properly on this recording.
