Tommy Steele and Julia Foster-Half A Sixpence.

Tommy Steele and Julia Foster from the film version of the stage musical 'Half A Sixpence' (1967). The story is based on the novel by HG Wells 'Kipps'. Arthur Kipps, an orphan who unexpectedly inherits a fortune, and climbs the social ladder before losing everything and realizing that you just can't buy happiness.Tommy Steele was in the original stage version, and the 1965 Broadway stage show. I have liked this film ever since I was taken as a child to see it. I remember there being an interval, as the film was long 2 hours 25 minutes, which is not that long when you consider some of today's cinema release's, but back in the sixties there were a few films about with intervals, and no 'B' picture.

Tommy Steele and Gene Kelly: 'Two of a Kind' -1966

With thanks to my friend Pat Richardson for this, head of the Tommy Steele Society UK. Tommy was part of this CBS American TV special, 'New York, New York' with Gene Kelly, Woody Allen, Gower Champion and Damita Jo Freeman from 14/02/1966. It's interesting that Tommy would later in the 1980s go onto play the same role on stage which Gene Kelly played on screen in 'Singing in the Rain.' Tommy often cites a story in TV and radio interviews that when he was appearing in 'Half a Sixpence' on Broadway, Gene Kelly visited him in his dressing room suggesting they do a special together, and this is the result of it. If anyone has the complete show of 'New York, New York' then please let me know!

Half a Sixpence, Trailer (1967) Tommy Steele, Julia Foster, Cyril Ritchard

Half a Sixpence is a 1967 British musical film directed by George Sidney and choreographed by Gillian Lynne. The screenplay by Beverley Cross is adapted from his book for the stage musical of the same name, which was based on Kipps: The Story of a Simple Soul, a 1905 novel by HG Wells. The music and lyrics are by David Heneker. Set in Kent during Edwardian England, the plot centers on Arthur Kipps, a draper's assistant who falls in love with a chambermaid named Ann. In quick succession, he comes into a fortune, nearly marries a wealthy girl, marries Ann instead, loses his fortune, but regains that fortune and lives happily ever after with a loving family .

Tommy Steele & Marion Ryan - "Maximum Plus" - HQ

Recorded in 1963 and NEVER released as a record. At 4'15", it was too LONG for a single and because of the variation of sources of the music (in the Sixties, clearance would have been a NIGHTMARE) there was never an album, either. John Barry, Geoff Love and Philip Green all worked on the film - but for my money, this HAS to be a Philip Green arrangement. His backing tracks and film scores of the period were highly distinctive...
