Unique version here recorded for BBC TOTP's 1976 "Fernando" was ABBA's firstst non-album single, released in November 1975. Lead vocals were sung by Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The track appeared on the 1976 ABBA release Greatest Hits in some countries, although in Australia and New Zealand, "Fernando" was included on the group's Arrival album. "Fernando" also features on the multi-million selling ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits compilation. This song was to become ABBA's biggest selling single of all time, selling 6000000 copies in 1976 alone. All in all, Fernando sold over 10 million copies worldwide. "Fernando" was not originally an ABBA song but was written for ABBA member Anni-Frid Lyngstad. It appeared on her 1975 #1 Swedish solo album, Frida ensam. The song was written by Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Stig Anderson and carried the working title of "Tango". Preparations for recording began in August 1975. The original Swedish language version's lyrics were written by ABBA's manager Stig Anderson and differ substantially from the English language version. In the original, the narrator tries to console the heartbroken Fernando, who has lost his great love. "The sorrow can be hard to bear, but the fact that friends let us down is something we all have to cope with". The bittersweet chorus goes: "Long live love, our best friend, Fernando. I've Just finished editing some video's for DVD of the Original Edison Lighthouse Top of the Pops performances of their worldwide hit Love Grows (where my Rosemarie goes) in 1970. Dave & Stuart (original bass player & guitarist) have given me kind permission to upload this rare footage filmed in January 1970 and as you can see it comes off the BBC editing suite and still has the timecodes & date etc.. before final edit for broadcasting, this is the bands personal copy and now is here on You Tube for all to enjoy

No video of this fantastic Top of The Pops performance by Rod and the Faces seem to show the start to the end, so here it is, from the TOTP2 2002 New Years Party special. The Faces line up: Rod Stewart (Vocals) Ronnie Wood (Lead Guitar) Ronnie Lane (Bass Guitar) Kenney Jones (Drums) Ian Mclagan (Organ) John Peel (Mandolin) (was Ray Jackson on the record) Rod explained some years later that he and the band had been drinking all day and were playing football in the BBC corridors with Slade! After trying to get into the Pans People changing room they messed around a bit more with the football and Rod said to John Peel 'do the performance with us and bring the footie!' David Bowie performing the Jean Genie on BBC Top of the Pop's Recorded 3rd January and aired 4th January 1973: Broadcast this evening 21/12/2011. on TOP2 Christmas Special. David Bowie Top of the Pops footage found by cameraman John Henshall, 69, from Stanford-in-the-Vale, Oxfordshire, retained a copy of Bowie performing Jean Genie in 1973. He said: "I just couldn't believe that I was the only one with it. I just thought you wouldn't be mad enough to wipe a tape like that." It was unveiled on Sunday at an event held by the British Film Institute. The annual event, Missing Believed Wiped, was the first time the footage had been seen since January 1973. Mr Henshall said he only kept it because he wanted it for his showreel. In the footage he used Telefex Fisheye lenses which he had designed himself. He also ended up in the background of one of the shots. After the recording he asked producers for a personal copy on 2in (5cm) broadcast videotape. Roy Orbison - Oh Pretty Woman (Top of the Pops - 1964)

LINK: tinyurl.com Although he shared the same rockabilly roots as Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison went on to pioneer an entirely different brand of country/pop-based rock & roll in the early '60s. What he lacked in charisma and photogenic looks, Orbison made up for in spades with his quavering operatic voice and melodramatic narratives of unrequited love and yearning. In the process, he established rock & roll archetypes of the underdog and the hopelessly romantic loser. These were not only amplified by peers such as Del Shannon and Gene Pitney, but also influenced future generations of roots rockers such as Bruce Springsteen and Chris Isaak, as well as modern country stars the Mavericks. Orbison made his first widely distributed recordings for Sun Records in 1956. Roy was a capable rockabilly singer, and had a small national hit with his first Sun single, "Ooby Dooby." But even then, he was far more comfortable as a ballad singer than as a hepped-up rockabilly jive cat. Other Sun singles met with no success, and by the late '50s he was concentrating primarily on building a career as a songwriter, his biggest early success being "Claudette" (recorded by the Everly Brothers). After a brief, unsuccessful stint with RCA, Orbison finally found his voice with Monument Records <b>...</b>
