Hamburguer Totentanz Opus 136, No. 3 - Guy Bovet.

Thun, Switzerland, 1942) Hamburger Totentanz Liszt found the devil's antics a powerful source of inspiration, and besides the four Mephisto Waltzes he also composed the sprawling Faust Symphony and the piano-and-orchestra powerhouse Totentanz (Dance of Death). Swiss organist and composer Guy Bovet reverses the menacing gravitas of that work, and probably also of Saint-Saëns' Dance Macabre, with his Hamburger Totentanz. The piece was conceived in 1970, when impresario Herbert Wulf arranged a concert with Bovet in Hamburg, Germany. In that program, Bovet joined in a four-hand improvisation, meant to be a light-hearted romp. When eventually published in 1989, it was designated the third Hamburger Prelude, along with two created in later tours to the United States and Spain. But the one played in this recital is, by far, the most often programmed. Bovet shows a sense of humor rare in organ works, providing some spice to this varied program, and some of those ingredients are a handful of themes from other composers.

TOTENTANZ - KARG-ELERT (Jonathan Scott - MUSTEL HARMONIUM)

Totentanz Op. 70 No.2 by Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933) Performed by Jonathan Scott on a 1908 Art Harmonium by Mustel, Paris (Serial Number 1924 - 1057) at Victoria Hall, Saltaire. From the collection of Pam & Phil Fluke, Harmonium Museum, Saltaire. Totentanz (Dance of Death) is the second of two 'Orchestral Studies' for Art Harmonium written by Karg-Elert in 1907. It is based on the following verse: DANCE OF DEATH A vision. Death as a musician. On a bone harmonica he plays a bizarre dance, every now and then making a pause and a scornful laughing and grimacing. The dancers spin in grotesque rhythms, sometimes orgiastic, wild, sometimes shadowy and transfigured. The dance scatters. Quietly from the invisible depths lament the voices of the departed. A child, a virgin, a young man, a man. Their laments go unheard in the awful loneliness. Once again the musician clearly raises the horrific bone harmonica. The dance begins again. A clap of thunder - and the nightmare is over. (Translation from the German by Jonathan Scott) Please visit: www.jonathanscott.co.uk

Totentanz (The marionettes of Scott Radke)

Scott Radke was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in the nearby suburb of Strongsville. Radke has experimented with various media throughout his life and currently focuses on the creation of sculptural hybrid creatures with an extraordinarily, innocent, yet dark twist. In 1999 the popularity of his marionettes allowed him to leave his mind-numbing job at a bed-frame factory to pursue his creative passion on a full-time basis. His marionettes have been featured in films including Voices In My Head, a BBC documentary directed by David Malone; Desolation Sound, starring Jennifer Beals; God in the Machine, starring Thomas Jay Ryan; and Birthday Massacres music video, Blue. Radkes work has been published internationally in magazines including Bizarre (England), DPI (Taiwan), Refused, and Skratch. He has shown his work at BLK/MRKT Gallery (CA), M Modern Gallery (CA), Strychnin Gallery (Germany), Jonathan Levines former Tin Man Alley (PA), and CBs 313 (NYC) among others. Radke currently lives in Cleveland where he has created set designs, costumes, and masks for choreographer Sarah Morrison. Sarah and Scott married soon after their first creative collaboration, and their home has grown over the past ten years to include their daughter Isabella, 4 cats, and a lot of goldfish. www.scottradke.com Music by Olivier Messiaen, 'The Eyes in the Wheels'

Coroner - Totentanz

RIP (1987) While somewhat less focused and mature than its successors, Coroner's first full-length album remains essential listening not only for the group's fans, but for all who like their metal to go down fast, slippery and blistering. Coroner virtually reinvented the boundaries of late-Eighties speed metal on RIP, with Tommy T. Baron's fluid riffs and leads soaring above the jazz-influenced bedrock of Ron Royce and Marky Marquis' rhythm section. Despite lackluster production values, the album is rich and varied in textures, making excellent use of keyboards and acoustic guitars to create a mood of genuine dread that few bands can match. The kickoff track, "Reborn Through Hate," was an instant fan favorite and a concert mainstay throughout Coroner's career. RIP's lyrics occasionally leave something to be desired (especially a lyric sheet!), but Marky Marquis would address this flaw on later releases. Without question, this is one of the strongest debut albums any band has ever unleashed--and things would only get better from here. Esteban Sanchez plays Liszt Totentanz

Totentanz. Paraphrase on "Dies irae" (Dance of the Dead), S.126 Orquesta Sinfonica de RTVE dir. Enrique Garcia Asensio Esteban Sánchez Herrero (April 26, 1934 -- February 3, 1997) was a Spanish pianist. Born in the town of Orellana la Vieja in Badajoz in the province of Extremadura, Sánchez studied with his grandfather, Joaquin Sánchez Ruiz, choirmaster in the cathedral. He went to the Real Conservatorio (Royal Conservatory) in Madrid and studied piano with Julia Parody. He perfected his technique under Carlo Zecchi in Rome and Alfred Cortot in Paris. Sánchez won numerous major international awards, including the Ferruccio Busoni in Bolzano, the Alfredo Casella in Naples, and the Dinu Lipatti Medal from the Harriet Cohen Foundation, but chose to return home in 1978 to teach at the Badajoz Conservatoire. Between 1968 and 1974 he made a series of recordings in Barcelona, with producer Antonio Armet, of Beethoven, Fauré, Albéniz, and Turina. In 1976 he recorded an album of solo piano music by Manuel de Falla at Abbey Road Studios in London. These recordings have been issued on CD by the Spanish label Ensayo, and the complete Albéniz recordings have been reissued in a budget box set by Brilliant Classics. The recording of Albéniz's Iberia has been singled out for special praise and has been favorably compared to the recordings of Alicia de Larrocha by professional reviewers such as Jed Distler. Sánchez remains little known outside of Spain, but Cortot called him "a musical ...

Choral Arts Philadelphia: Totentanz by Hugo Distler (finale)

On November 11, 2011, Choral Arts Philadelphia presented IN MEMORIAM, a program of music by Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) and Hugo Distler (1908-1942). In this excerpt: the two final Songs (13 and 14) from Distler's Totentanz (Dance of Death), Opus 12, Number 2, including the dialogue between the Death (narrator Christian Johnson) and the Young Child (read by Laura Nagle). Matthew Glandorf, conductor. Video by Arin Sang-urai. SONG TRANSLATIONS: 13. The soul which here on earth is smaller yet than small, shall in the realm of God the fairest angel be. 14. The soul, since it is born for eternity, never truly finds peace in worldly goods and gains. Thus it's astonishing that you love the world so much and put your faith in frail mortality.
