The Tower of London: an introduction

During its near-1000 year history, the Tower of London has been used as a royal residence, prison, armoury, zoo, treasure house and storehouse but every one of these uses stems from its might as a fortress and symbol of royal power. And today it is still a working fortress with a military presence, daily ceremonies including the Ceremony of the Keys to secure the Tower for the night and the community of Beefeaters and Tower officials that live here with their families. Here, Yeoman Warder (or Beefeater to you and I) Dickie Dover gives an introduction to this British icon.

The ravens at the Tower of London: the guardians of the Tower

Legend says that the kingdom and the Tower will fall if the six resident ravens ever leave the fortress... There are nine ravens at the Tower today (the required six plus a few spare!). Their lodgings are to be found next to the Wakefield Tower. These magnificent birds, large members of the genus Corvus, the crow family, respond only to the Ravenmaster and should not be approached too closely by anyone else!

Medieval historian Marc Morris travels the length of Britain to tell the story of the nation's castles, consulting the Bayeux Tapestry and archaeological evidence to discover how they evolved over a 600-year period, and revealing that the traditional motte and bailey-style constructions were actually of foreign invention, developed by William the Conqueror and with the episode ending with the building of stone castles that includes the notorious Tower of London. © Discovery Civilisation

Tower of London- A Fascinating Historical Place

One of the greatest historical places in England. It was built by william the conqueror around 1066 and was a great medieval palace for a long time as well as a prison and a dungeon. It is famous for its many towers including the bloody tower where the two princes were murdered. Anne Boleyn and katherine howard were executed on tower green and their bodies lie in the chapel right behind the execution site in st peter ad vincula. In the wakefield tower, there is graffiti carved into the walls from prisoners from long ago. There is graffiti known to be carved by lady jane grey or her husband who was known as the 9 day queen. She was executed within the tower by Queen Mary who is now known as bloody Mary. Elizabeth I was also kept in the tower at one point for false accusations against her. Sir Walter Raleigh was also kept prisoner here for almost 12 years! This place is known to be a very haunted place due to its dark historical past. Also famous for housing the crown jewels where many tourists come to see them. It currently has the fit for a king exhibit which displays henry VIII's actual armour. Known to be a haunted castle

Tower of London - Time to Travel

The Tower of London is visited by two-million tourists each year. William the Conquer built the White Tower fortress on the River Thames shortly after being crowned King of England in 1066. Over the centuries the Tower has served as a royal residence and prision. The Tower has played a bloody role in English history. Thousands were executed on nearby Tower Hill and some, including three Queens of England, were beheaded on the Tower Green. Two young prinices were taken to the Tower and never seen alive again. The bodies of two children were found years later sealed in a wall - a murder mystery from a time long gone by. Today, Yeoman Warders, also known as "Beefeaters" lead guided tours offering a dynamic and often humorous version of the history of this special place. The Crown Jewels are kept in the Tower. See the Traitors Gate, The Bloody Tower and the Chapel Royal. Take Time to Travel to the Tower of London, it's a living embodiment of English history and well worth a visit. Special thanks to Yoeman Warder Mitch for a great tour.

Jousting: Tournament at the Tower pt 1, London England 2007

Philipped Willaume (at left) and Graham Turner (at right) smash it up at the Tower of London, September 1st, 2007. This was part of the "Tournament at the Tower" in which Armourer-Jouster and Historic Enterprises co-owner Jeffrey Hedgecock participated, but unfortunately was only able to participate in the first show, due to a hand injury sustained in a hard strike on Order of the Crescent team-mate Steve Mallet, in his third course. The jousting at the Tower was the most intense yet seen in England, featuring a 40 metre long 6 foot high solid planked tilt, the first ever used in a major modern jousting event. Several jousters sustained light injuries due to the force of impacts caused by the speed of the horses and near direct angle of the lance strikes. Other jousters participating included Toby Capwell, Jason Kingsley, Sean George and Mark Griffin.

The Tower of London - Anne Boleyn Day 2009

TheAnneBoleynFiles.com has created an annual Anne Boleyn Day to commemorate the untimely execution of this Queen Consort on 19th May 1536. This video shows photos taken in and around the Tower of London and the final resting place of Anne Boleyn in the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula. Paudie Kennelly, the photographer was lucky enough to visit on 19th May and to photograph the roses which are delivered to the Tower every year without fail and which are laid on the tile marking Anne Boleyn's resting place - very moving.

Tower of London Guided Tour

This is the free tour that is given at the Tower of London. It's led by a real Beefeater and is filled with information. I missed the first 5 minutes of the tour where they were talking about how traders to the crown were taken to the court yard and beheaded. Their head would then be taken, on a stick, to London Bridge so that it is displayed for all to see who come to London. It was a reminder to outsiders and insiders alike of what would happen if they betrayed the crown.
6-09 In Search Of... The Tower of London Murders (Part 1 of 2)

Season 6 Episode 9 Part 1 Hosted by Leonard Nimoy and broadcast weekly from 1976 to 1982, In Search Of... is the greatest mystery documentary show ever. I grew up watching this show, enjoying the spine-tingling presentation of quasi-fact and dramatic synthesizer-heavy music of Rinder and Lewis. I am not selling this material, neither am I interested in buying bootlegs. It is currently commercially unavailable, so I am joining with others to make evaluation of this excellent series possible. Check my subscriptions to find users with more episodes, and drop me a note if you have posted any "new" ones. Thanks for watching!
