Charley in New Town (1948)

'New Town' is an entry in a Central Office of Information-sponsored animated series featuring the everyman character Charley, and promotes an escape from grimy, smoggy towns and arduous commutes to work. With the highly distinctive animation style of husband-and-wife team Halas and Batchelor, this short aims to explain the rationale behind the planning of the new towns, with their enticing offer of green open spaces and a type of housing to suit everyone. Building skywards - Manhattan-style - is quickly ruled out for us Brits; "Don't be silly, I'd never get me pram up there" pipes up a member of the unseen chorus of unhappy city-dwellers. But considering the urban sprawl now devouring the south-east of England, perhaps skyscrapers were the way to go after all. Fresh footage of huge tsunami waves smashing town in Japan

Follow latest updates at twitter.com and www.facebook.com As survivors of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami grappled with the enormity of the devastation, more footage emerged on Sunday showing the moment the tsunami struck Japan's northeast coast. Residents of the port town of Kamaishi in Iwate prefecture watched in horror as the first huge tsunami waves hit, sweeping away cars and buildings. One group managed to scramble to safety on higher ground, where they watched as the water surged towards them. Others were stranded on the roof of a multi-storey building as the water level rose rapidly below

The Specials - Ghost Town (TOTP)

The Specials lip syncing their classic number one single Ghost Town on Top Of the Pops in july 1981. UK 2 Tone CHS TT17 7" Released: 20 June 1981 A side Ghost Town B side Why? Friday Night, Saturday Morning Ghost Town marked the pinnacle of the labels achievements. Critics have called it "one of few singles to reflect perfectly a period in history" and "one of the most important records of our time". Released at a time when Prince Charles and Lady Diana were about to marry and inner city riots swept Britain the single summed up perfectly the irony of the whole period. It stayed on the number 1 spot for 3 weeks and became the labels first single to sell a million copies and also marked the first UK 12 inch from 2 Tone. With the exception of Dance Craze 2 Tone had been very quiet throughout the first half of 1981 and friction was becoming apparent within the Specials camp. According to Terry Hall the recording of the single was dogged by bad feeling among the various band members even getting to the stage were they wouldn't go into the studio together. The arrangements of the singles' others tracks also caused ill feeling. Terry Hall would have preferred his composition Friday Night Saturday Morning to have consisted of just him and a piano in a pub sing-a-long type fashion but in the end he had to make do with version which was released. The structure of the song Ghost Town has also been a topic of conversation. The typical format of verse-chorus-verse was set aside in ...

Little Big Town - Boondocks (With Lyrics) HQ

Little Big Town- Boondocks....Better than the crappy live versions where you cant hear the singing... Download link: tinyurl.com (Chorus:) I feel no shame I'm proud of where I came from I was born and raised in the boondocks One thing I know No matter where I go I keep my heart and soul in the boondocks And I can feel That muddy water running through my veins And I can hear that lullaby of a midnight train It sings to me and it sounds familiar (Chorus) And I can taste That honeysuckle and it's still so sweet When it grows wild On the banks down at old camp creek Yeah, and it calls to me like a warm wind blowing (Chorus) It's where I learned about living It's where I learned about love It's where I learned about working hard And having a little was just enough It's where I learned about Jesus And knowing where I stand You can take it or leave it, this is me This is who I am Give me a tin roof A front porch and a gravel road And that's home to me It feels like home to me (Chorus) I keep my heart and soul in the boondocks You get a line, I'll get a pole We'll go fishing in the crawfish hole Five-card poker on a Saturday night Church on Sunday morning (2x) You get a line, I'll get a pole We'll go fishing in the crawfish hole (Down in the boondocks) Five-card poker on a Saturday night Church on Sunday morning Say a little prayer for me

Southern California Shanty Town / Tent City

Here are some videos of a tent city / shanty town that has popped up in the suburbs of Southern California. I've never seen anything like this in America since the great depression. At first it seems as though many of the residents had lost their houses due to the mortgage crisis, and I am sure some had, but it seems rather that most here have just fell on hard times due to the economy in Souther California in general. The tent city has been removed by the city and no longer exists to my knowledge. We only went there a few times, as our major work is in Los Angeles with the homeless on Skid Row.

Calico Ghost Town

California travel expert Veronica Hill of www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com tours Calico Ghost Town in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Many of these abandoned mining communities, which thrived during the late 1800s, are now popular tourist attractions. Located 10 miles north of Barstow, Calico Ghost Town in Yermo was named for the rainbow-colored hills that produced one of the richest silver strikes in California history. This was a wild and wooly place with 22 saloons, its own red light district and several fine restaurants. The Calico Hotel, run by Mrs. EL Hazen, promised a generous welcome, first-class meals, and reasonable rates. (The original hotel is no longer standing) By 1887, there were 1200 people living in Calico. Children of local merchants and miners attended the one-room Calico School, which sometimes doubled for church service on Sundays. Back in 1885, school teachers made about $80-$100 a month and children played games like marbles, ball and bean bag toss. Plan on a full day to explore this historic ghost town. You can relax on a rocking chair, play a game of checkers on the porch, or enjoy some good-old fashioned gold panning. Around lunchtime, grab a cool Sarsparilla and lunch plate at the Calico House Restaurant, then tour the bath house, where you'll find antique tubs, a laundry press and old west kitchen. The Blacksmith shop is home to several antique tools and equipment. Along the East Calico Hiking Trail, you'll find unique cabins carved ...

Rob Hopkins' Transition Handbook

Founder of the Transition Network spreading throughout the world, Rob Hopkins talks about Transition Town Totnes and moving towards a post-peak oil society. His book The Transition Handbook gives an account of the founding of Transition Town Totnes, and the global spread of Transition towns. He shows you how to start the Transition process in your community, and why it is important that communities are resilient to the coming decline of oil as an energy source. He also includes the facts about peak oil, and puts a persuasive argument for acting now, rather than later. In A Town This Size - John Prine Music Video by Wille Scott

Hello there! I made this video to John Prine's 'In A Town This Size' because the song is about small towns, and, well, we are living currently in Tofino, which is pretty small. Also, my girlfriend comes from Sointula, an island off of the north end of Vancouver Island, and THAT is a small community!!! But a really great one, so if you have never been, it is a must see! Anyways, John Prine is a favourite of her family, and most of all her mother. So, please enjoy the video!!!

Pacific Northwest Wonders - Oregon Ghost Towns

Oregon ghost towns, like many in the western United States are fading away, victims of a hundred years of harsh winters and neglect. Some, however, refuse to die because residents are restoring the towns to take advantage of the tourist trade. We invite you to join us on a road trip through Oregon visiting towns and sites that are becoming just memories, as well as some that have seen "new life" which we call "living ghost towns". We'll also provide a glimpse into the lives of the early pioneers. Our journey takes us from the eastern Oregon gold fields, through central Oregon, The Columbia River Gorge, Portland, south to near the California border, as well as the central and northern Oregon Coast. All of the towns and sites in this video are accessible by 2WD and recreational vehicles.
