River Monsters Alligator Gar Feeding Frenzy on Trinity River at Dallas Waves Whitewater Park Dallas

Numerous alligator gars, some over 3 feet long in an evening feeding frenzy in the tailrace of the Dallas Wave Standing Wave Trinity River Whitewater Park near Downtown Dallas Texas. In 5 minutes I counted over 200 surface strikes mostly from Alligator Gar. The alligator gar — an ancient fish that has existed for 100 million years — roams the rivers, streams and bayous of the southeastern United States. It gets its name from its alligator-like snout and its double row of dagger sharp teeth. Unlike most of its close relatives, the alligator gar can breathe air and survive above water for up to two hours. Its body is covered in an armor plating of diamond-shaped, enamel-coated ganoid scales, and it's been said that this shining armor can produce sparks when struck by an axe. The Devil Fish: The alligator gar stands accused of vicious human attacks, most notably at Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana. A New Orleans newspaper once published an article contending that the alligator gar is more dangerous to human life than the "man-eater shark." But little evidence exists to suggest that this fish is actually aggressive towards humans, raising the question of whether the alligator gar has been wrongly accused of attacks perpetrated by an animal with a real track record of violence.

Texas River Otters Spotted Mating on the Trinity River !!!

Went kayaking today on the Trinity river and heard some funny screaming around a bend and this is what I witnessed. Thought it was a beaver or nutria rat at first sight but I believe these might be rare Texas River Otters. There was two of them. I thought they were about to battle but it was just nature playings its role out. Very funny noises and mating rituals.

Trinity River Kayaking with North Texas River Runners

On this trip the North Texas River Runners take an excursion down the West Fork Trinity River. The trip begins at the Mountain Creek Preserve in Irving Texas and ended at the Sylvan Rd boat ramp. It's funny but while we were paddling it seems the Spirit of Alvin the Chipmunk posses everyone and speeds up the video for about a minute or two, sorry? In this video you will also witness a small creature swimming in front of my kayak, my attempt to get a bottle of water which I don't succeed on my first attempt, and finally going through some small rapids near the end of the video. Hope you enjoy and happy kayaking.

Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge Grand Opening Fireworks Dallas Texas March 3, 2012 Trinity River

Grand opening weekend fireworks show of the Santiago Calatrava designed Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge over the Trinity River in Dallas, Texas. 54Jr_Tc-WyI is the video with the soundtrack. Video was shot about 400 yards upstream of the Continental Street Viaduct using a waterproof camera positioned in an inch above the surface of a pond. This video only captures the lower 1/4 of the fireworks. There were many many more that the camera did not film. The camera was so close to the launch site that some of the larger concussion shells made the water ripple, as seen in the video.

Dallas County Sheriff Chasing Dirt Bike 1/22/12 on Trinity River Levees Dallas Texas

Dallas County Sheriff Deputy cornering and chasing dirt bike motorcycle on the Trinity River levees near Industrial Blvd and Corinth. The dirt bike tried to flee into the woods only to find he was trapped. He rode back and forth for a minute looking for a way out. In that time, the deputy positioned his squad car blocking the road under the trestle. If it were a vehicle or quad bike the deputy would have caught him. The deputy had no chance against a dirt bike. The rider approached the car and appeared to taunt the deputy before taking off back up the levees towards downtown Dallas. This is the north levee of the Trinity River in Dallas, Texas at the new Santa Fe Trestle Trail trailhead. The DART rail line linking Dallas with Oak Cliff is directly overhead. Private motorized vehicles are forbidden from driving on the levees. This is due to potential erosion issues and safety. Fines are high if you are caught.

Angry Beaver slapping tail at Trinity River Wetlands Dallas Texas

Beaver slapping tail at Trinity River Wetlands at Miller's Ferry on the Trinity River, Dallas, Texas November 6, 2011. These beavers live literally between I-45 and old Central Expressway in the heart of Dallas. As the camera pans out you will see the freeways. Like many animals in the Great Trinity Forest, this beaver pair have little fear of humans, since they never see them. The beaver at the beginning of the video is completing a monster tail slap attempting to scare me away or lure me away from its lodge. I have seen angry beavers in Colorado too, high up in wilderness areas away from people. Interesting to see such behavior in an urban area. This beaver is the largest rodent in North America and the third largest rodent in the world, after the South American capybara and the Eurasian beaver. Adults usually weigh 15 to 35 kg (33 to 77 lb), with 20 kg (44 lb) a typical mass, and measure around 1 m (3.3 ft) in total body length. Very old individuals can weigh as much as 45 kg (99 lb). Like the capybara, the beaver is semi-aquatic. The beaver has many traits suited to this lifestyle. It has a large flat paddle-shaped tail and large, webbed hind feet reminiscent of a human diver's swimfins. The unwebbed front paws are smaller, with claws. The eyes are covered by a nictitating membrane which allows the beaver to see underwater. The nostrils and ears are sealed while submerged. A thick layer of fat under its skin insulates the beaver from its cold water environment. The ...

Copperhead Snake on Great Trinity River Trail Joppa Preserve Dallas Texas

Venomous Copperhead snake Agkistrodon contortrix, found on the Great Trinity Trail in the Joppa Preserve in Dallas Texas on a night mountain bike ride in the Great Trinity Forest near Little Lemmon Lake south of Loop 12. Snake was released unharmed and slithered away. Agkistrodon contortrix is a species of venomous snake found in North America, a member of the Crotalinae (pit viper) subfamily. The more common name for the species is "copperhead". The behavior of Agkistrodon contortrix may lead to accidental encounters with humans. Five subspecies are currently recognized, including the nominate subspecies described here. Like all pit vipers, A. contortrix is generally an ambush predator: it takes up a promising position and waits for suitable prey to arrive. One exception to ambush foraging occurs when copperheads feed on insects such as caterpillars and freshly molted cicadas. When hunting insects, copperheads actively pursue their prey. Juveniles use a brightly colored tail to attract frogs and perhaps lizards, a behavior termed caudal luring. In the southern United States, they are nocturnal during the hot summer months, but are commonly active during the day during the spring and fall. Like most North American viperids, these snakes prefer to avoid humans and, given the opportunity, will leave the area without biting. However, unlike other viperids they will often "freeze" instead of slithering away, and as a result many bites occur from people unknowingly stepping on ...

Trinity River, CA - High Flows May 2011

These are clips of the Trinity River in Trinity County, California on May 7, 2011 at peak high flow during the 2011 restoration flow releases from Lewiston Dam. This was a "wet year" flow, so it was at 14700 cubic feet per second at Burnt Ranch Gorge. The clips are from locations between the South Fork Trinity and Cedar Flat, including Grays Falls and the confluence of New River at Burnt Ranch. These high flow releases are intended to restore the natural configuration of the river channel, which has been severely altered in recent decades due to storage of high spring snow-melt run-ff in upstream reserviors. Reconfiguration of the river channel is intended to restore habitat for salmon and other native fish and wildlife.

Howling Coyotes in Dallas, Texas along Trinity River McCommas Bluff Preserve

Pack of coyotes (Canis latrans) howling and calling on Trinity River in Dallas Texas at McCommas Bluff in Dallas, Texas. May 7, 2011 6pm. The coyotes are on the opposite bank in the woods. The south bank of the Trinity River in this area is home to a variety of wildlife. Feral pigs, whitetail deer, bobcats, coyotes, bald eagles, wood storks to name a few. Wish I could have seen them since rumors abound that these coyotes in Southern Dallas might have crossbred with dogs, pit bulls, is the rumor. I would like to see what they look like. My guess is that these are straight coyotes since the area is so wild with other animals. The name coyote is borrowed from Mexican Spanish, ultimately derived from the Nahuatl word cóyotl. Its scientific name, Canis latrans, means "barking dog" in Latin. Preliminary genetic evidence, however, has shown that "coyotes" in some areas are, genetically speaking, 85-90 percent Canis latrans, and from ten to fifteen percent Canis lupus, along with some domestic dog DNA; this prompted one researcher to suggest, jokingly, that they be called "Canis soupus," as they are a "soup" (mixture) of canid species.
