Tuareg groups disagree on objectives

Mali has been plunged further into crisis after losing much of its north to Tuareg fighters and other armed groups. The separatist National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) have declared an independent state of Azawad, a zone the size of France, in Mali's desert north. They have an uneasy relationship with Ansar Dine, another Tuareg-led group that swept south, but that wants to impose Islamic law. Al Jazeera's correspondent Mohamed Vall reports from Timbuktu.

Tuareg's Return Home - Mali

May 1997 A report on the plight of the nomadic Tuareg people of the Sahara. For centuries the deserts of northern Mali have sustained the Tuareg; herdsmen known as the 'blue people' of the Sahara. But, in the 1990s the combination of droughts and civil war forced most to abandon their herds and flee to refugee camps in Mauritania. Now Moussa Ag Mohammed is returning to his land; but the loss of his herds, and the remorseless advance of the desert, means his ancient lifestyle is doomed. Mohammet Ali, whose lineage can be traced back twelve hundred years, digs with pitiful tools to maintain an ever sinking well against the dusty backdrop of the desert plains. He refused to fight or flee during the war, sticking by his philosophy 'If it is hot where you are, it's even hotter somewhere else'. Orphaned Faty and her brother tend their precious market garden on a patch of sand outside the village; every last drop of water must be pumped by hand. The Tuareg are still pessimistic that their way of life will die out as their children migrate to the towns for an 'easier' lifestyle

Does Tuareg Independence in Mali Highlight an African Awakening for Self-Determination?

DemocracyNow.org - The president of Mali, Amadou Toumani Toure, has formally resigned after soldiers ousted him in a coup in March, with power set to be transferred to Mali's National Assembly after elections later this month. The soldiers say they seized power because of Toure's alleged mishandling of a rebellion of ethnic Tuareg rebels, who have succeeded in capturing several key northern cities, declaring their independence and now calling for international recognition. Officials claim the rebels are a mix of Tuareg separatists and Islamists with links to al-Qaeda. We speak with Firoze Manji, editor-in-chief of Pambazuka News, a pan-African social justice website. He was formerly the Africa director for Amnesty International. Manji recently co-edited a book called , "African Awakening: The Emerging Revolutions." Manji argues the political unrest in Mali, Senegal and beyond is "driven by the fact that over the last 30 years, our people have lost all the gains of independence," due in large part to what he calls neo-liberal policies imposed on many African countries by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. "People feel that their governments are more accountable to the banks and to the multi-national corporations than they are to citizens," Manji says. Mutiny in Mali over Tuareg rebellion

www.euronews.com Renegade soldiers in Mali claim to have seized control of the African country in a declaration on state TV. The mutineers, who referred to themselves as the National Committee for the Restoration of Democracy and State, cited the failure of the government to put down a separatist rebellion in the north as their motive. Dozens of people have been killed in the uprising by Tuareg nomads seeking to carve out a homeland in Mali's northern dessert region. Hours before the TV address there was sporadic shooting near the presidential palace in the capital, Bamako. It is not clear if there have been any casualties in the coup attempt. The army has long complained of a lack of arms and resources to tackle the rebels, who have been bolstered by heavily armed fellow Tuaregs returning from Libya's civil war. The whereabouts of President Amadou Toumani are unkown, but a government spokesman said he was in a secure location. Tourmani was due to step down after elections next month. Ishumar 2 - New Tuareg Guitars

February the 21st 2011. Released in France by Reaktion, in the UK & Ireland by IRL. 3 years after 'Ishumar, Music of the Tuareg Resistance', the French label Reaktion, specialising in music of the Sahara, releases a second volume as an overview of contemporary Tuareg music creation in 2011. 30 years ago, the group Tinariwen (Nothern Mali), revolutionised Tuareg music by introducing the electric guitar to support their songs of rebellion. At the beginning of the 2000's, the group began an international career with growing success: 4 studio albums; tours around the world; and prestigious collaborations (Robert Plant, Herbie Hancock,...). Has this first success of a Tuareg band changed the situation for all the bands that have followed their model? Do their successors still dream of revolution, or rather of an international career? How can the Tuareg guitar evolve? Although these evolutions are taking place at this very moment, the compilation 'Ishumar 2, New Tuareg Guitars' tries to provide some answers. Tinariwen's shadow hangs over all 12 tracks on the album, but all these groups, from Mali, Niger or Algeria, have understood the need to move away from the original style. Like the current Tuareg youth who exchange mp3's via bluetooth, these artists are open to the world and carry out bold hybridisation between Tuareg guitar and other music: rock (Tamkilwate), blues (Nabil Othmani), reggae and even a touch of rap (Amanar). The instruments are diversified with the ...

Tatta A Tuareg traditional midwife by Brahima A. Diallo

Tatta is a portrait of a traditional midwife, Tatta Walet Anoufleye, in Adjel-hoc, a Tuareg community in the Kidal Region of northern Mali. In this Tuareg community, giving birth is a family affair. Expectant mothers prefer to stay at home during their entire pregnancy and especially for the delivery. Whilst the Community Health Centre offers modern obstetric services it tends to be avoided by the local women. The health centre is seen as an environment in which they feel insecure and uncomfortable. To lessen the gap between traditional ideas and professional health care, an NGO has offered special training to six traditional midwives in the town of Adjel-hoc. Tatta Walet Anoufleye is one of them. This group of traditional midwives is working with community health workers to promote safe childbirth and to raise awareness about the health services. With Tatta, we explore the cultural drama of a Tuareg community in transition between modernity and tradition, dealing with pregnancy and giving birth.

Tuareg People are on their Way to Fight the NATO-Rebels in Libya (Sept 26, 2011)

In this report by Diego Marin from Telesur we can hear about growing battles within Tripoli between various militias who seem to fight for their own power, without taking much heed from the political NTC. This would cause an unsafe situation. Perhaps part of these fightings are the result of the Tarhuna-tribe who - according to various rumors - would have decided to oppose the Rebel-rule of Libya. Diego also talks about the Tuaregh who would have decided to back the green Jamahiriya in Libya as well, claiming that Tuaregh from Niger and Mali are on their way to move into Libyan territory, mostly to avenge their people who were killed by the NATO Rebels. Video mirrored from the english telesur youtube channel at www.youtube.com If this were to be true about the Tuaregh it would make the situation more international, with more black people fighting in Libya, which would aggravate the racist tendencies in quite a few 'Rebels'. More news from ArRai from Morris at www.youtube.com (no more food, water in Sirte; fighting in Ghadames between Tuareg and Rebels - it would have been the people inside the city of Ghadames that would have revolted - No Tuareg from abroad; Bani Walid is free of Rebels, and much of the road to Bani Walid would now be in Green hands)

LCS Timbuktu Multimedia exhibition of Tuareg Tales

Living Cultural Storybases (LCS) is a non-profit working to counter the disappearance of minority and indigenous languages and cultures around the world. We use appropriate digital technology to reconnect the generations, and to connect those living traditional lives with their urban diaspora, around their rich traditional oral heritage - stories, songs, poems and narratives. This video shows the very first multimedia exhibition of Tuareg stories, in Tamacheq in Timbuktu (Tombouctou), Mali in October 2008. See www.storybases.org and http This video was filmed and produced with the kind assistance of Tim Short (www.tagliatelly.co.uk) and John Christie, who happened to be in Timbuktu at the time.
