Many boomboxes and stereos in the '80s and '90s had little metal discs "tweeters," often with grilles shaped to make them look like horn tweeters, that were wired up but didn't seem to actually do anything. Here I solve the question of whether these "super tweeters" really make any sound or if they're just totally fake. I also demonstrate one of a pair of 12-inch vintage 1962 woofers that were rescued from a Lowrey Brentwood tube-type electronic organ that was being dismantled about 7 years ago. I've had them crudely bolted into a pair of cardboard boxes ever since, and now I'm thinking of finally giving them a proper home in some real speaker cabinets with good midranges and tweeters to match. Providing the sound for both is a 1986 Realistic SA-10 mini stereo amplifier. This was one of Radio Shack's longest-lived pieces of audio equipment, sold all the way from the 1970s up to 1994. With 1.2 watts per channel it won't rattle any window panes, but its simple 10-transistor design gives excellent unmolested clean sound.

Prototype of a ribbon tweeter made by myself, following some references on internet. This one is using: 2 bars of sae1020 steel, with 7/8"x7/8" to act as pole pieces. 10x (5 each side) 100x20x6mm Grade N50 neodymium magnets with a 15mm of gap. 14mm aluminium foil (0,0125mm=12,5 microns). Ribbon impedance: ~0,1 ohm. Rms voltage: ~ 2vrms So this one got about 40wrms, im buying a test microphone for more details. Note: Cables used got smoked with 40wrms. Amplifier used: 18x lm3886 in 6 kits boards with 3 each, able to control more then 1kw rms on this impedance. The final one will have 30 magnets with 1,5m tall! I bought these beat up pair of Paradigm S2 speakers off ebay and it wasn't disclosed that the tweeters and one woofer was dented and abused. I found out when I took the tweeters apart that there looked like signs of overheating on the voicecoil. I hope this is useful for other Paradigm owners. I suspect the procedure is similar for other Paradigm S-series speakers. The replacement drivers were sent to me within 3 days and I was impressed with the quality of support from Paradigm through the whole process. I will post a video of them in action next time. They sound seems much better now - the highs are more controlled and the clarity seems to have improved from this repair.

Diamond Tweeters Produce Clearer Sound in B&W Speakers Music lovers could be in for the ultimate listening experience, thanks to a new range of speakers containing parts made of diamond, writes Marina Murphy in the Chemistry & Industry magazine. The unique properties of diamond make the speakers less susceptible to distortion and thus provide a clearer sound, say their manufacturers Bowers & Wilkins (B&W), UK. The 800 Series speakers contain diamond 'tweeter domes' -- the parts responsible for producing high-frequency sound. The domes are tiny components that move backwards and forwards in the speaker. The compressed air that results creates a pressure wave, which in turn produces sound. Because diamond is rigid and very strong, the sound waves pass through the domes very quickly. But some tweeter domes made of traditional materials such as aluminium are susceptible to distortion at high frequencies. For example, aluminium tweeter domes break up at a frequency of around 30 kHz, whereas the diamond tweeter domes are stable up to 70 kHz.
